Petrol grade

Featured Replies

Hi all

I've just taken delivery of a new VRS 230 TSi and am wondering whether 95 RON petrol or 98/99 RON is best suited to the car. Has anyone experience and feedback of using the higher octane fuels?

I run on bog standard unleaded, and it runs fine, I've tried super unleaded and found the difference to be very marginal to say the least and not really worth the extra cost.

I'm use Momentum in mine. I'm told that the car uses separate maps for premium and non-premium fuels and as I do get more miles per tank with Momentum I only tend to use this (my current car as below plus my previous Mk2 and Mk2.5 vRS').

Thanks for the replys, Momentum is Tesco Premium right?

Yes. Momentum here too. I tried a tank of 95, and it was okay, but I felt I could notice a difference.

Gaz

Tesco Momentum 99 is 99 ron minimum as is Costco Super Unleaded or Shell V-Power Nitro+ in the UK.

Tesco Momentum 99 is 5 pence a litre more expensive than Tesco 95 ron or maybe other supermarket unleaded 95.

*& likely cheaper than Esso, BP, Shell, Texaco, Gulf and other branded supposedly premium Unleaded 95 ron.*

Greenergy that supply ESSO stations and other Independents is the producer of Tesco Momentum 99.

Esso, Sainsbury, Texaco, BP, Gulf Super Unleaded is 97 ron min in the UK.

Always used 99 octane Shell V-Power since day one and car produced 7bhp more than Skoda claim at 248.6bhp on a rolling road. Most independant tests show a 3% increase in power and I have experienced a 10% improvement in economy. It also eliminates any pinking you might get using 95 octane under heavy load. Long term it will be better for your car. However if you lease or PCP finance your car then probably best to stick to boggo £1.15 per litre fuel, although Tesco Momentum only about £1.20 per litre. My current tank is showing range of 460miles which based on the 50 litre tank (11 gallons) equates to 41.5mpg.Your car your choice.

Ive tried Asda, BP and Shell standard unleaded fuel in my car and noticed it lumpy with the Asda fuel, not so lumpy with BP and fine with Shell, so I only use Shell now :)

I get an average of 100 miles to £20 roughly.

Very unlikely that a standard car has different maps for different octanes.

The car will merely have a 'knock' sensor (glorified microphone) and the cpu will adjust spark advance/retardation accordingly. A higher octane will run more advanced spark timing than a lower octane which should make a difference to performance/economy.

The matter that is disputed is how much and how noticeable the differences actually are. Even 'independent' tests results can vary.

I'll concede that some VW group cars DID have different maps for different scenarios at one time, but these were declared to be illegal (dieselgate)

You should have a chat with TMWNA, you would have a lot in common with that sort of consumption.

I believe TMWNA has a 245? Mines a 220 version and I literally drive 6 miles to work and back every day (Ive covered under 1200 miles in 6 months in the car) with a rare outing past this during winter, so do not expect high MPG's. When it warms up a bit I will be covering 100-300 miles in a month.

Whats the average cost per mile in a 220?

I misinterpreted your figures assuming you had a similar pedal to the metal approach to TMWNA :)

My 245 only does 20mpg after 2miles yet by the time I reach 15 miles it's averaging 40mpg. Today on my mainly motorway 26 mile commute I averaged 40.5mpg on the maxidot and my computer always under reads compared to actual brim to brim measurements. £60 will take me 400 miles on Shell V-Power Nitro.

All very possible.

Certainly under the cap on my Mk2.5 it read 95 (98) which plenty of forums appeared to believe that this confirmed the engine was aware of premium fuels.

All I can definitely say is that I get better mileage on a full tank from the higher octane stuff, so I'll stick to it.

Ah ok, I do when I get the chance, but not driven the car much since purchase annoyingly. Looking forward to the 60 mile drive down to Hastings in April and giving the car a clear out :)

I might try Shell V-Power and see if that makes any difference, thank you :) I noticed that Asda petrol at 5p cheaper returns the same MPG as the standard Shell Unleaded. IIRC I covered over 300 miles on £52. That included some spirited driving :)

Wow! Your Pence Per Mile must be quite high :)

@Maggle

For your engine 95 RON will be OK. I'll post tables with technical data of your engine and a table where is specified the use of 98 RON for other 2.0 engines with more power. Your money, your choice.

Mine is 14p with an average of 37.7mpg across nearly 15k miles. Always filled on 95 Tesco Unleaded or less frequently Asda or Morrisons.

Tried Momentum 99 for a few months but never noticed any difference in mpg or the way it drives.

@Alunakis

In the EU 95 ron is ok for all petrol engines as they are EU tested for emissions on 95 octane as the WLTP testing and certification is done with.

They have to be able to run on 95 ron.

?

Which world area is the table you shared from is it from a EU Countries Manual?

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/405007-14-tsi-150-ps-95-ron

(i see the fuel flap pic you posted here.)

It is odd that at the highlights it says  'ROZ'  & 'MIN'  when the 'Min' is 95 actually and it should be '98 recommended' where there is '98'.

As was on stickers on Fuel Filler Flaps like with 1.4 TSI Twincharger (Euro5) and others including 'GTI's / R's

http://volkswagen.co.uk/need-help/owner/Fuel

VW GTI's as in Golfs are engines with the same ps as a vRS 220, 230 or 245ps, and Polo GTI's were the same as 1.4 TSI vRS Twinchargers.

Up to anyone if they want to use 95, 97 or 99 or even 102 ron in the UK.  There is no 98 ron sold anymore in the UK.

ROZ is the equivalent of RON in Germany. All the tables are from EU country manuals. For @Maggle:  Look under fuel flap, you 'll find the octane your engine is mapped, designed for.

Thanks, Ive put £10 worth of Shell V Power in to see what difference is made if any :)

Went into a tesco station today but couldn't find a pump with momentum.  They are all supposed to have them. The nearest shell garage is a 30 mile round trip, the next being over 50 miles! Looks like its back onto morrisons finest!

If your tank was completely empty then you MAY notice a difference otherwise it is going to take quite a few more similar refills before you have full V Power content.
