Leaking petrol tank

Featured Replies

@Adrian55555   You seem to be missing the point, the car has a pressure issue is leaking out petrol, the car is dangerous and as a After Sales Manager that should be obvious.

We are not talking diesel which is difficult to ignite but petrol.

Obviously Employees drive cars, even cars they should not drive, and hand back cars that customers should not be driving.

Sounds like it could be a problem with the EVAP system.

The three times we have noticed this fault - the first thing we notice is a very strong smell of petrol then see  petrol coming out of the petrol cap - the petrol pours out for about 2 hours and roughly 5 litres comes out - the car has been parked for a couple of days and the petrol tank is around half full - hope that helps -

many thanks for all your help everybody

I dont mean before it is fixed, this is after the technicians and skoda techinical have supposedly fixed the car. It will need road testing at some point!!!

If its something that happens after its been parked up for a few days this needs to also be replicated at the dealers.

Others have had your problem:-

Here is the fuel system parts diagram:-

https://nemigaparts.com/cat_spares/etka/skoda/sup/851/201450/

If that small pipe from the filler neck that runs to the tops of both parts of the saddle tank gets blocked or kinked, fuel can get pushed up the main filler pipe by air pressure in the petrol tank.

Parts 2 & 18 may also have something to do with getting rid of any pressure build-up in the tank.

Just my 5 penneth.

Thank you - I can now go back to Skoda and say that at least two other 280ps have had the same problem

Avrile, just out at moment so will reply on return, with detail of problem and fix

Another thread proving poor basic design or poor assembly by a workforce who could not care what they throw together.

Is it any wonder dealers and their mastertech fitters either deny so many issues as 'characteristic' of the car?  They must be growing weary and tiresome of having to rectify the problems coming out of the factory too.

With the onset of brexit I hope airbus does not relocate from the UK and move to the Czech Republic. We could do without the same level of workmanship as seen in skoda being applied to aircraft!

Hi Steel. Do you have the details and a fix for this problem?

My son-in-laws car just had the same issue here in Oz.

Fuel Evap Canister replacement was the answer in my case. I had to do this on my 280 cestate last year. No fuel leaking out but a strong smell of petrol at the rear of the car - especially on warm days. Mine was out of warranty so if memory serves I had to cough up around £85 (parts & labour) & it is a known problem on many VAG models that use the same fuel system components (Passat, Octavia, Seat & some Audi models I think). The fuel canister itself was on back order at the time I took mine in which indicated that it was in high demand. I had it done at the same time as a Revo Stg 1 remap which went someway to softening the blow.

I had the same issue last year and it was ok after the Evap Canister was replaced. Never happened again since.

Just a slight correction. The canister was replaced first, which fixed the leaking, but shortly after I was getting an engine management warning for the evap valve which was replaced also.

Looks like I have this problem…. No fuel on rod yet but it’s hot and strong fuel smell when I park up…

Hi Nick,

Fuel used to pour out when I released the built up pressure by opening the petrol cap on hot days, even with tank half full.
Might be worth getting it checked.
Mine hasn't had a problem since, even when I fill the tank to the brim.

All the best.
