Tyre pressures front Vs rear

Featured Replies

Hi I own a 62 plate Octavia 20 TDI cr 170 and have owned it for 3 years, within those 3 years I've never struck a nice balance with the tyre pressures!! The factory recommendations make the car feel too soggy and people have mentioned they are actually ment for the petrol version , so I've stuck with the pressures of 32 in the front 30 in the rear what I want to know is how much difference in pressure should I have between the fronts and the rears, thanks in advance for any help

What you are doing, whatever feels safe, stable and comfy and not over or under inflated for the use the car gets.

With 3 years under your belt I guess you’ve tried a few options.

Most cars seem to simply “advise” same pressures all round on the fuel flap sticker these days, but if you’re running unloaded most of the time then no problem running less in the rear as you’ve shown above.

My simple theory (FWD) is that the Front tyres are doing all the work, while the Rears just stop the tail from dragging on the road.

Assuming you’re happy with the quality / performance of your tyres, one simple way to experiment - as mentioned recently elsewhere - is to blow ‘em up to the high ECO pressure and then just let the air out in stages till you get to a comfortable position.

Test Drive them on your favourite piece of road so you can compare grip and feel.

6psi all round.  40psi if you are slack like me and tend not to check too regularly.

He means 36psi of course. Thats about what I use.

I used to run my 59 plate vRS CR at 2.2 Bar front and 2.3 Bar rear (or 32 & 33psi old skool).

This was purely down to personal preference re handling/comfort and with a small load always in the boot.

As BoxerBoy says, why not experiment and find something that sits right for your style of driving.  Just keep an eye on the numbers and check once a week as recommended by most reputable motoring organisations.

I run ~34 psi front and back on my non-vRS TDi, it seems happy enough...

35 front and back although after a few weeks the car settles to 32 all round
