Service Plan-Just What Do You Get For Your Money?

Featured Replies

I purchased my Octavia SE Sport 1.4 Estate new back in January 2016 at the same time I bought the 2 year service plan which includes 2 consecutive services for which I paid £15.50 over 18 months, so £279 in total. Yesterday it had its second service and having had the opportunity to examine the paperwork it says Description; Carry Out 20000 mile service/ 1st Year Service with the normal list of oil, filter, screen wash etc but no plugs, air filter or similar. Total cost £139.

I wont name the dealer at this stage as I'll be speaking to him later no doubt but as the total cost of servicing appears to be only £256 and I've paid in £279 I'm thinking why did I bother?

So question is should I be expecting that the 2nd service should have been the major service, with plugs etc replaced, coming in at much more than the £139 that the invoice suggests or I'm I missing something here?

Mileage wise I've only done 12450 over the two years.

Their Fixed Price services suggest you should be getting the following based on a standard Interim/Major service:

Mind, my 1.4 SE Sport, was put on a variable service, which meant it's first service was due at 24 months/20,000 miles, however all that was replaced on that was an interim service... Was charged £215 for the privilege.

Thankfully, I have been unofficially informed that on my PCH, because the car goes back before the countdown reaches 0, I don't have to service it, saving me £215 again next time!

^^^

Above is on Fixed Servicing and cars 3-10 years old in the T&C's.

But then some will match that, and some better that as the car is under 3 years old and not getting much done at 18,000-20,000 miles / 24 months.

@nick348

Sadly you bought or were sold the wrong plan if Spark Plugs or Air filter might not even get looked at until 4 years / 40,000 miles and a second major service,

& maybe not even then.

I spoke with my local Skoda dealership regarding the service plan and ended up getting the 1 minor and 1 major package with the monthly direct debit.

Two reasons for this. Firstly, my first modern/smart/new-ish car and thought that for a couple of years at least, it can see a dealer for its servicing needs. Secondly, I asked the dealer exactly what my would be changed on the vehicle during the service, based on the current mileage, etc. They agreed to start on the major and renew all items that fell within the service guidelines, leaving with me with a minor service next time.

I have a two year service plan on my MY16 RS, I paid £ 387 and for that I get an interim service and a major service so based on the prices above it turns out a good deal.

So depending on age/mileage, that could be next to nothing and not be much more than a minor service, or oil change.

That's the get out clause - most items are "where required" - and many dealers will happily charge you full price for a major service, having not touched the spark plugs/fuel filter, air filter, pollen filter etc.

Basically, yes. My car was over the required mileage, so items were replaced.

When I took my VRs in for the 2nd service I told the dealers I want all parts replaced and I added/paid for the spark plugs, etc to be fitted as these were not included in a minor service. The dealer happy obliged and I asked them to show me the removed parts so I could take pictures for the service history :)

I believe service plans include 1 major service and 1 minor service, so would question this with the dealer if you have no had them done.
