Engine warning light - nobody can diagnose

Featured Replies

Hello there, I am new here

I have Skoda Yeti Yeti 1.2 TSi Ambition DSG 2010, I have a problem that different mechanics were trying to diagnose for 2 years now with no luck. I have an engine warning light that comes on usually few weeks after it is being reset. I drive normally, especially on motorways everything is smooth. But when I start the engine I can hear some strange chain rattling sometimes for few seconds after which it runs smoothly, also my car often shoots when changing from 2nd to 3rd gear, especially going uphill.

Some ideas my mechanic have are: Either exhaust sensor is faulty or timing chain needs replacing, both are costly fixes, especially timing chain.

maybe someone had similar situation?

If you have an early petrol Yeti and the timing chain has not been replaced yet it needs doing tomorrow. Particularly as it is noisy. Cars of this age have either had it done in time, or needed expensive repairs after the sudden catastrophic engine failure that results when the worn chain snaps or jumps a few teeth. Valves hitting pistons is never a desirable outcome.

This is a known issue rectified by replacing with better quality chain.

Later 1.2 petrol cars have a completely different design with a cam belt instead.

Well now I am terrified of driving it! :) Thank you for this information, this looks like it. Just called my mechanic to give me a quote.

Hopefully not the mechanic who couldn't diagnose it! Only joking. :D

Haha, no this time it's proper VW center (there's no Skoda centers in Portugal) last mechanic actually told me that if problem is timing chain, he won't be able to fix it as he doesn't have appropriate tools

Let us know how you get on please,it's good you came here and asked.

Sure will do, have my appointment on Monday with them, will push them to do timing chain change straight away, as I know they will try to do easier fixes first - everything my other mechanic already tried with no success.

Considering that the same engine is used in various VW models (and Seat ones) I'm surprised he doesn't have the right tools.

He mentioned a locking wedge tool that he doesn't have, but he also said that he never done anything like this, so I think he was out of his depth there

That sounds likely, and atleast he admits it.

Can I make a suggestion? In your details on here it asks for your location; it would be worth adding Portugal.

UPDATE: VW center doesn't want to go straight for timing chain, they are pushing to change lambda / oxygen sensor first as this is what diagnostics of engine warning light is telling them. They cannot guarantee that this will fix the problem, I said yes but I really worry that I will spend €400 now and still have the original problem

Not being funny but it IS your vehicle and YOUR money...

If you feel happy with the advise given here, which is given freely, with no gain apart from nice feelings from doing good deeds/giving good information, then you can insist they do the cam chain as the first port of call.

If this particular model suffers from this issue, you will most likely need to do it anyway, within a certain time. I know nothing of this issue but judging by those who do's replies on this and other posts, you will be far better off spending the cash and doing it, then leaving it, unless of course, it has history to show the rectification has been undertaken prior to your ownership!

You are then going to drive, safe in the knowledge that the engine wot fail and any other issues will most likely be far less destructive.

The sensors can also most likely be done by your local guy and, I might suggest, have already been looked at in the two years anyway. I am sure you see the logic of this. If the dealer refuses to do the job asked of them, take it to another dealer or well trusted VW specialist who can and will. It will be their loss, not yours as they will lose custom.

Thank you, you are absolutely right, I just agreed to sensor because of desperation of trying to fix it for last year. I just called them and said what you said and they agreed to change a chain, and yes as you said, my local guy can change a sensor much cheaper.

Hope I have not given you a bum steer but the dealer will always do what the computer says! They then go from one thing to another, etc until they eliminate any fault, having changed many things that may have been perfectly serviceable but you don't get a refund on items replaced incorrectly!  They will say it was shown as faulty.

Good luck and keep us posted as to wether you find the solution and how long they take/how much they charge, etc. This information can be very helpful to others.

You were right though that my local mechanic, who is very honest, can do all the easier things himself, it's only timing chain itself which he couldn't do. So should be fine,

Will keep this thread updated for sure, they will give me a quote after lunch today

So I picked car today as I need to drive to airport tomorrow. I noticed that after they changed timing chain my car engine vibrates and rattles when I accelerate or even when I am idle at traffic lights. A bit worrysome, but I cannot take it back for at least a week as I am flying away for a week on Sunday.

It kind of feels like sparkplug issue I had before. Unfortunately I won't be able to take it back today. Will try when I am back next week

Ok another issue popped up after today's chain change. I was leaving basement parking and car was struggling to go up and wouldn't change gears and was jurking a bit. Had to back down and start over with better headstart

It's needs to go straight back to the garage, with the least amount of driving before then as possible.

As above needs taking back. I'll bet they have disturbed leads or coil pack during the chain work. Best not to run the engine much as:-

  • If chain mis-fitted  all could go pear shaped
  • If running on less than four cylinders due to lead/ coil pack issue then the Cat can be damaged with unburnt fuel
