Oil Service on new (to me) FL Octavia

Featured Replies

Hi all,

On Saturday I bought my new car, a 67 plate FL Octavia from a national dealership chain (not Skoda specific). When test driving the car below warning showed on the dash. The salesman assured me that the vehicle had been serviced and that the car had not been updated to show this. He would arrange for my local dealership to update the car and all was fine. I was obviously very sceptical but took him on his word. I tried to check for a service book and proof but one was not included with the car. I was told this is due to all Skoda servicing being kept online instead. He was meant to get back to me this week with an update but has yet to respond to my calls and emails.

While I wait for him to get back to me I thought I'd ask here if this seems feasible. Can a service really be carried out without the car being "updated". I didn't find the below screens in the car until I got home. One of the screens is contradictory as it says a service is not due but an oil service is. Their is a branch of this dealership near me (although a Citroen dealership) so I can go there to get some answers and I have a local lookers skoda dealership if I need them to give the car a once over.

Any advice at this point is welcome.

The fact that the inspection mileage is showing 18,500, which is nearly as high as it goes would imply someone has tried to reset something recently but hasn't managed to do it properly (as fully reset the days would be nearer 2 years to match) or to include the oil change counter - there are 2 different service timers and this potentially is confusing to someone not experienced with the cars.

After my last service (variable) it displayed:

Inspection in 19900 miles or 730 days

Oil change service in 18700 miles or 730 days

If you register and log in to the MySkoda app and link everything to your car, check the digital service record has been updated otherwise you could have trouble proving the car has full service history when you come to sell it. This is probably available on the Skoda portal online too.

Car definitely needs to be update by the service. You can check online in MySkoda application. Someone probably forgot to connect it and reset.

If the oil is clear, yellow or light brownish, not black, they replaced it.

I used the myskoda app and put my VIN in and the only details it has for a service is the delivery inspection (see screenshot from phone). I'll keep chasing the dealership to get confirmation it has carried out otherwise they can do it at the dealership local to me.

I don't get the option for a digital service book in my mySkoda app?

This is the first time I have used the app, it's on an Android phone if that makes any difference.

Still had no contact from the Dealership. I am now assuming that they sold a car knowingly needing a service. I'm going to try and get hold of the sales manager today rather than the salesman who sold me the car who told me everything was fine with it to figure out what to do.

Has anyone else been in this situation? I assume they are liable to carry out the service?

What 'National Dealership' Was it bought at?

No idea what the T&C's were of the sale of the car to you.    The Salesman's verbals are not worth the paper they are not written on, but if you were lied to or mislead or the person was mistaken what matters is how they now deal with it.

If the car was serviced yet the Technician / fitter or whoever serviced it can not reset the Service Indicator that is a concern.

A concern that would have me wanting the car serviced now where they have all the gear and more than ideas.

I didn't know if there was a "no name and shame" policy on this forum so didn't want to name them. The dealership is a Evans Halshaw (it was a vauxhall dealership I bought it from and the local ones to me are a Citroen and a Ford).

@Slinkie

Good.

Evans Halshaw have generally been getting their sh!t together.

Some members and customers have had good results recently.

(New engines etc, as they have the power to make Skoda / VW assume the position, when there are known Fundamental Design, Manufacturing, materials, software faults.

ie TSI's with Sh!te engines that VW refuse warranty work on with private individuals.)

If they said Serviced to Guidelines or Schedule or before collection and their Technicians / Fitters or whoever were clueless then tell them in writing to get it sorted out.

When I purchased my car from a Seat dealer, I got them to print out an internal invoice which showed the parts, oil etc used for the service they carrried out.

VW Group Main Dealers, Approved Repairers and even Independents with access to the system can do that.

ie Licenced diagnostics, access to TPI's, Service Campaigns type Independents.

I've got confirmation that the service was carried out (unless the below looks wrong to anyone with more knowledge than me on this). I now just need to take it somewhere for the message to be removed from my car!

Turn ignition off and wait for 20 seconds, hold down trip reset button turn ignition on - 1st display is oil change, keep hold of it second display is inspection service. Depending on the one you want to reset, let go of the button and then press it again.

When I got my car from a Skoda dealer, I had the same thing and doing the above reset the oil service message.

Anyone that has not serviced the car should not really just reset the Service Indicator if you are wanting a Full Service History.

This was time for a Major Service if done at 12,272 miles or 2 years.

A new Pollen Filter would be nice.

No big deal, up to you.   & maybe get it on Fixed Servicing if not doing a high annual mileage.

Is the major service not the "inspection" that is shown on the screenshot in my first post? That states it's 275 days away which would be about 2 years from new.

I disagree. The car has been serviced by Evans Halshaw. It’s just over 1 year old and has done 12271miles. It needed an inspection service and oil service, which from the invoice it seems to have had. The mechanic has not reset the indicator on the car itself properly and it needs the oil service message resetting, which can be done easily  as I’ve described.

The pollen filter should be changed at 60000km (37282 miles) or 2 years, so it isn’t due yet.

If just over 1 year old and not that far over 372 days and on variable you can do what you like.

As to 'Inspection Service'.

Back when there were 'Minor / Inspection' Services and Major Services year about, that was what they were called.

No 'Interim' and Major services, and Inspection Confusion.

Be sure to have Body Inspection report completed at 2 years at an Approved Repairer if not done at Minor , Inspection or what ever services.

Skoda are knocking back paint and corrosion warranty claims because Main Dealers do not always do them.

I doubt it's enough to invalidate a warranty, but there's no record of the sump plug being changed?  Thought the recomended oil change meant new oil, filter and sump plug? Hope they didn't re-use the old one!

Some garages use the vacuum method of extracting the oil so a sump plug would not be specified. That invoice looks perfectly fine to me.

& when sucking out the oil at operating temperature the sump plug should still be removed to remove any oil left and a new sump plug fitted.

Obviously there are those that do not bother doing that.

I see, didn't know that was the correct procedure.  What is the advantage to sucking out the oil then? Is it just easier to manage the extracted oil?

Yes,

& for DIY'ers dead easy.

For Commercial / Business premises like a Garage / Workshop doing many oil changes daily, weekly, annually,  H&S & Financial Sense.

Oil removed at Operating Temperature, safely in the equipment, dealt with in a safe manner etc etc.

Well according to this its not a Long Life oil to the 540/507 SPEC ., Had a similar issue on my first service at  skoda dealer and demanded they do the oil change including filter etc again , as the car was set to the LL  18k miles  required not the 1 year  service

That idea was discredited during a thread last year when someone pointed out the crucial "or" on the left of the page....
