280 tuning box and pedal box options,

Featured Replies

While waiting for my new sportline plus 272 to arrive I've been looking into piggyback tuning boxes for it, I've looked at dtuk fsr+ bluetooth tuning box and pedal box plus, race chip GTS+ and XLR pedal box and burger Motorsport jb4,

Is anybody running any of these on their 280 superbs?

Any good or bad things to say about any of them and are there any other options like the steinbower box worth considering?

Mine came with a Steinbauer on it from the dealer (3 months old demo) and I can't honestly tell you if it does anything, good or bad. It's buried somewhere in the bay and I've not yet bothered to find it to turn it off and run it for a while to see if I notice a difference.

The general lack of information around them plus the high price would push me more toward a Revo if I were actually paying for it myself.

I've had the JB4 on the same engine for 1.5 years and couldn't fault it. Performance was practically on par with a stage 1 map and the support was great. JB4 has a number of features that place it higher than the rest of the tuning boxes imo, most important being the AFR monitoring and ability to bias fueling as needed, not just blindly adding boost. There's also stuff like boost by gear and rpm, the very handy logging and custom mode (with BMS support) for those that like/want to mess with their settings till they find the absolute sweet spot. For me, it's the only box I would consider over a remap.

I will be measuring (and reporting on) 0-60 and 60-120 times stock vs JB4 once I get to put some miles on the car so keep an eye for them.

Software remap will invalidate your engine and gearbox warranty.  If you are running dsg a further software map would be recommended to integrate the new engine map with the gearbox.  Nicky Gower at R Tech is the guy for VAG TSI tuning.

I have had a previous car tuned by him but wouldn't consider a map until my Superb was out of warranty.

Its a brand new car and i've payed extra for an extended warranty so remap is out the window,

my current car has a Revo map and I've seen some superbs make good gains with it, my local tuner is Riverside racing, they had one on their Dyno recently that made 388bhp iirc

Jb4 is most likely my box of choice too, with the Bluetooth module, due to the added control you mention,

My only concern is that it may be too complicated for me to adjust if I add any further mods, I see a racingline r600 intake, inlet hose and a sport cat plus maybe an intercooler in the cars future and know the box will benefit the car more if it's adjusted for these mods

Will you be running a pedal box? I'm leaning towards the race chip one at the moment

I won't get the BT module as I find it way too expensive for what it is. You have the exact same access and adjustability/logging options with slightly less comfort if you opt for the data cable shown above,  a USB OTG adapter and the JB4 Mobile app. Cost of all those is not more than 50$ and I have purchased the app already for my previous JB4 unit. The only difference is that you connect to your phone physically, by running the extra cable through the firewall (same as you have to do for the OBD cable anyway) but I keep the phone down there in the cubby anyway when I'm using the app to log or fine tune.

George can help with custom tuning. Usually you try a set of start values, send him logs and he comes back with suggestions as to what could be changed, then you re-log etc. However Intake and inlet pipe don't need any further custom tuning, whatever minor gains they can offer they will just do by putting them on. A downpipe and i/c could probably allow for a small bit of extra boost but do you know for sure if the pre-WLTP downpipes are compatible with our cars and the twin GPF's? I'm yet to confirm this as a photo I got of the new piping seems different and what about the new sensors connected there? How do we deal with those in terms of software as well as physically? Not straightforward to go stage 2 at this point from what  I can tell. Worse case, you simply sell the Jb4 (they retain their value rather well) and get a full stage 2 remap if/when the software and hardware become available.

I've got a pedal box from DTUK that I have been running on the GTI for a year now and I believe can be moved on to the Superb so yes, that will go on too. Very little between those products to be honest so whichever known brand would do imo.

A downpipe would be further down the line as like you, I'm unsure if the current ones for the older engines fit, I'm close to BCS powervalve exhausts so I may go see them and see if they need a development car for post wltp engines

Is the dtuk pedal box one single box, with pair of cables or is it a main box and a remote like the race chip one,

Let us know if you find out something regarding the exhausts, I'll do the same although I plan to stick with just the JB4 for the first months, see if all is good from factory etc.

The one I got has a cabled remote that you route to the small driver's cubby in front of the fuse box and it stays tucked in there all the time. Assuming the Racechip is the same but offers wireless connection for not messing around with cables. They effectively do the same thing. I bought mine off another member at almost half the price and it's worked perfect so far so no need to change to something else. If buying new I might consider something else although as I said that cable is hidden away and does not interfere with anything so not a big deal.

Please bear in mind that 272 is completely different engine compared to the 280 one. 272 is DNUA code, doesn't have the MPI injectors, has GPF and different emissions control. I doubt that power box for the 280 will work for 272. At least Steinbeuer's designed for 280 doesn't work with 272 - I had a discussion with their technicians. They are currently working on a version for 272 but still have no release date....

I am fully aware, I had posted about this in this forum a while ago but  "completely different" is probably a stretch. It's the same block, engine internals and all main characteristics are the same. The MPI is deleted but this was always the case with US variants of the Golf R/Audi S3 engines anyway. The main difference is the added GPF's and sensors which must also mean new ECU maps, but that's about it. BMS have confirmed compatibility of the JB4 with the new engines so unless proven to be otherwise I believe it should be fine.  No idea about Steinbauer.

They said they units have been tested on the Arteon which was one of the first to get this engine, as well as some MY19 Cupras.

I'll keep an eye for the update. I have been thinking about the JB4 for my 280 but couldn't find any actual owner reviews.

Incidentally, an hour ago FedEx tried to deliver it to me but no one was at home so they left a notification. I mean I placed the order Sunday night, chose Express shipping as it was just 17$ more on a 550$ total and it took just 2.5 working days to arrive from California to my door in Sweden :o:o  That's unbelievably fast!  Another reason to buy directly from the manufacturer.
