Original tyres query

Featured Replies

.....It's the tyres that are original, not the query,  I suspect!

Hi - new Superb owner here, having just got a 2016 model with 30,000 miles on the clock.

The car has two nearly-new Pirelli P7s on the back and two almost worn out Continental Contact 5s on the front.

The Pirellis have a make date of 2018 and the Contis 2016.

This suggests that the Contis were the OEM Skoda tyres, probably moved from back to front, and that the previous owner has replaced the original fronts with the new Pirellis?

If this is true it suggests that the car has, effectively, eaten 4 Contis in 30,000 miles.

Does that seem like normal wear to those of you who have had their cars over that sort of mileage?

I'm thinking of replacing the duff pair with Michelin Primacy 4.

Does anyone have experience of running these on a Superb?

Thanks for allowing me to pick your brains.

I have a 4/2017 with 40k on it, the one of the rears is original and not even half worn (Dunlop).  The lease company put two Primacy 4s on it in December for me.  Don't feel or sound any different to the Dunlops although it spends most of its miles on the motorway and I don't throw it around.

The other rear was punctured and unrepairable so I had to replace it and being stuck in Winchester the only suitable one they could get was a Pirelli.

I have two new Primacy 4s on the rear, with the original rear Contisport Contacts on the front now. I can't say I've noticed any great difference with the Michelins to be honest - their performance seems broadly equal.

Will be putting on Michelin cross climates in a few weeks to replace contipremium contact 5 on the front of my 190 diesel. The continental are very poor, ie little traction in wet and not great in low temperature dry either so not taking any chances!

Just changed mine at 20k about 5.5mil on back and 4 on front P7’s.

I’d had enough of them though ...

Mine has been delivered with 4 Pirelli P7 , I'm really looking forward to change them for Michelin PS4. I wasn't satisfied of P7 on my ex Superb MKII. Too soft, poor precision in sterring, poor feedbacks on road state, noisy after 20000 km, poor wet grip after 15000 km . PS4 were much better!

Though I'll have to wait a little bit, since I also have 4 winter tyres (Conti TS850P) ;) .

Thank you all for the helpful comments.

From Bap33's description I'm not going to enjoy the PIrellis on the front very much.

Unfortunately they are virtually new and, as a Jock, I can't bring myself to bin them this early.

Guess I'll just have to enjoy some traffic light Grand Prix starts to get them worn quickly!

I used them on my previous Superb - did 24,000 miles on them before selling the car with reasonable amount of tread left.  Quieter than the original whatevers too!

@cardo I don't know how long the P7 may last on the front axle of a MK3. On my ex- SuperB MkII (225/45/17 / 98W), they lasted roughly 40000 km on the front axle. But their behavior already significantly got worse from 30000 km.

Bridgestone Turanza seem to be very noisy (feedback from my father, driving an Octavia Mk3 sinec 5/2018 and ~8000 km).

No chance. The P7's have such poor grip they'll probably just spin and last forever :)

These were the worst tyres I've ever had on a fast saloon.

My lease company  has since fitted Hankook and that aren't brilliant but they are much, much, better than the Pirelli, especially in the cold and wet.

There is a video from engineering explained on YouTube about tyre performance and the P7s basically lose a lot of performance once worn.

I have 16k, 4x4 model on original P7s and there is still a lot of thread left, about 4.5mm.
