VRS 230 - High Idle on Startup

Featured Replies

Hi all

Is it normal for the a Vrs 230 to have a high idle on start up, stays high (1200~) for around a minute then settles to around 900rpm mark?

Also I know someone has posted this before but when my windscreen freezes over I get the 2 circle imprints and also an imprint of a a4 piece of paper, can I get this replaced under warranty?

Welcome.

The idle is normal.

As to the screen and how they are fitted at the factory the best thing is to let an Approved Repairer / Main Dealership know ASAP as it says in your Warranty T&C's.

Tell Skoda UK as well, as they will be who has to approve a windscreen replacement.

Others have had windscreens like yours replaced, but that does not mean you will.    Skoda UK / Warranty provider / Resolution Managers have gone all hardball.

(Thank you for your warranty claim, now bog off and do not bother us, type thing.)

The idle behavior is certainly normal for a Mk II and Mk II FL vRS. The Mk II is even higher, sitting at about 1400.

Mine is a 2017 Mk3 FL 245 and it idles at 1,200rpm when cold allowing me to let the clutch out without any throttle, pop it straight into 2nd gear (manual) and let the clutch out again. The idle speed will allow the car to accelerate upto 15mph in 2nd without even touching the throttle. As you say it soon settles down to between 800-900rpm. Never had those marks on my windscreen but others have on here and as Skoffski states some have been replaced under warranty.

Normal for every petrol car, even from the carburetor era. to prevent engine from shutting down when cold. Before  automatic choke, controlled by cooling fluid passing through, you controlled it yourself with a push/pull lever. :)

Good old times, I hated choke. On that old car I've learned to use brake and throttle with a single foot. :) Still use it when changing gears down while braking.

Plus one on my hatred of the manual choke on my early cars. 1988 Citreon AX GT was an absolute bit*h to keep running smoothly.:blush

These days the initial short duration of high idle is to help bring the catalytic converter up to operating temperature as fast as possible to improve emission control, particularly important given that until the recent changes regarding NEDC to WLTP, emissions figures were based on a 20 minute long NEDC test from a cold start. It was crucial to get emission controls active as quickly as possible to keep the test results low.

Probably also helps to get the Oil Pressure up quickly as well.

Yep my 220 TSI does this.

Doubt you'd get a windscreen replacement under warranty for that.

Problem? I've owned cars from the 1961 era on and I'm just grateful that the wee scunners start nowadays.

If your referring to a cold start its normal like every other car. Petrols tend to be higher than diesels. Warm it should drop back almost straight away.

The marks on the screen, are normal too, had it on every single one of my new cars (many) including Audis, BMW's etc. Its the suction pads that put the screen in and the build sheet.  It will clean off but tbh it only appears if your windows steam up etc. Mine don't I leave the air con off. Can't believe it could be a warranty clean, at least for no more than a chemical clean unless damaged.
