Head unit swap - whats best?

Featured Replies

I currently have a 2013 MIB1 unit with Kenwood GVN60 sat nav, but I am considering a change to a new all in 1 unit so I have better ability to update the Nav, and better function with phone etc.

So what are my options? any recommendations? don't mind spending a few quid so long as it will be supported in terms of map updates etc long term,

Cheers

Depends on what you want to spend. I think the 5Q0035874A MIB2 Amundsen is a great unit. It can run an 8 inch screen, it has SmartLink and they are cheap to buy. The maps are SD card based and you can get links from this forum to the update portal to download the maps when they are released. I really liked mine but during the virtual cockpit retrofit I upgraded to a MIB2.5 Columbus with the 9.2 inch screen and it is awesome. Is it worth the £1100 upgrade cost from the Amundsen on a new car? Probably not. Is it worth the £1100 install cost vs £5-700 install cost of the MIB2 Amundsen? I would say if you have the funds to spare then yes. Yes it is!

love the whole look really minimal.

Hello all, I'm a long time lurker on the site! Special hello to Sasha, you are so helpful on here and your thread has inspired so many  (now including me, since I'm planning to get started on a virtual cockpit retrofit! Wish me luck!)

Funnily enough, I will have the Amundsen mentioned ready for sale as soon as I get my newly sourced Colombus bits swapped into my car, so M7R please PM me if interested.

Regarding, swapping out the headunit, I had a look across the site but couldn't find any guides for swapping out a headunit and display. Does anyone know of some good ones? Failing that, anyone know any Skoda ICE specialists in Kent/Essex area?

Thanks

LTL

You just need VAG radio tools, 4 for the screen and 2 for the radio. Just insert the tools and pull the parts out of the car. On the FL screens the bottom 2 on the screen are covered by a piece of trim and this can be easy to break. If you look at all the breakers on eBay they all have screens with missing trims and they don’t have a separate part number iirc.

I had discounted the OE head unit tbh as when I was looking before it was a case of no one could activate them as it couldn’t be done with VCdS?

If if I can fit a normal factory Nav for not silly money I will happily.

id love the later screen and virtual cockpit but tbh I plan on only keeping this one for another year or maybe two before going to a petrol VRs and poss biting the bullet and getting a FL one with the toys I want.

so how hard is the Oe head Unit? And the same for a MIb2 unit as MIb1? Or it it easier to just fit a MIb1?

finally what else is needed? Screen unit and the head unit in the glove box, anything else? Or is it plug and play provided it can be coded? (I have gps in there already from the GVN unit)

They can be activated, but not with VCDS, you will need to have the Component Protection removed from the radio and then the radio will need cooked to work with the car. I had both of mine done by Pawel (pab567) and my Amundsen was CP locked to my car by Skoda in the UK but my Columbus is CP free and would work in any car. The 5Q0035874A MIB2 Amundsen works with the FL screen really well. Quite a few people have done that swap now. You will also need a 5Q0035726E USB port. The FL 8 inch Amundsen screen is 5E0919605M for reference. If you want to make some money back if the car is not a long term keeper I recommend a Columbus as they are much easier to make CP free, then you could sell it and put the Bolero back in and get your money back. There are various MIB2 Columbus’ that work so if you want the low down on which ones definitely work, talk to Pawel :)

Thanks Sasha, very helpful (as ever)! Really appreciate it :)

M7R, mine likely won't be up for silly money, but I need to get the new one in and check what is what first

Really helpful thanks, looks like an Oe retrofit is the best option then.

Wouldnt mind the fl screen but if I can get a mib2 unit pre fl that’s all there ready to go job done.

So first setback yesterday, my eBay sourced new unit and new screen which was supposedly completely unlocked seemed to power on, but didn't display anything on the screen. Checking the car using OBDeleven seems to indicate that CP was triggered. At least the new screen works and looks great!

@Pabs would be grateful for your help sir! The new unit is currently out of car. I can PM you more details about the parts

I think it might be @pab567 you need to contact, could be wrong though

I believe so :)  @longtimelurker pls share more details - what is unit model number and SW version, what is screen model number.

@pab567 tried to send you a Pm but it says you can’t receive any, i too am now looking for some help,

cheers

@M7R looks that I missed fact that I have reached maximum number of messages in my mailbox, I have just fixed it so you can PM me now.

Thanks @pist0nbr0ke for the correction! @pab567 thanks in advance!

Original unit (Amundsen): 5Q0035874A, Hardware: H24, SW 0245
Original screen: 5E0 919 605 J

"New" unit (Columbus): 3V0 035 020 A, Not sure of Hardware or Software
"New" Screen: 5E0919605M

Both 5Q0035874A and 3V0035020A should work with 5E0919605M without any issues - unless 3V0035020A was reworked into MIB2.5 (565035020A) as MIB2.5 requires 9.2" screen (5E0919606D)

Hmm, thanks @pab567 both the new unit and display were sold from the same car, so I don't think it has been reworked. So it should just plug and play and load start up screen regardless of CP? Is there a way to check if it has been reworked?

When fiddling with it yesterday it definitely had power going to it, but the screen wouldn't switch on. I could see a CP warning when I checked for faults afterwards.

Anything else I need to check?

Thanks again!

Connect 5Q0035874A to the new screen and check if it works.

Yes, sorry I should have mentioned earlier: In the car currently is 5Q0035874A with 5E0919605M, after testing I left the new screen in the car - both working perfectly. I just need to get 3V0035020A into the car and working now, so I can get started on VC

Yeah stop quoting and PM’ing me ;)

i have the reworked MIB2 amundsen unit from Pab forsale with an 8 inch flat screen. The screen is going cheaper as there is a very faint almost unnoticeable line, hardly noticeable at all

@JohnnyType2How much are you lookng for the screen?  Message me if you dont want to advertise in this section.

Ta

Edit:  Does anyone know what the difference is with the replacement USB?  Is it just the data throughput?  Seems strange that the change can be done with the original cable in place.

Edited by MarkyG82

i didnt change my usb at all and have no problems with andriod auto etc. ive looked at both USB units and there is no difference and the parts numbers are the same, this is from an FL car and my own my14

I had to change mine to a 5Q0035726E for CarPlay :) @JohnnyType2 why the radio change? Further upgrade?

yes, i blame you!!!!

VC unit with 20k on the clock, i will need your help :)
