Roof light cover needed on MK3 face-lift

Featured Replies

After another two days in the garage to fix noises etc, Skoda are claiming the roof rattle noise I'm experiencing is due to me fitting "non standard" leds to the roof lights and the light cover does not sit correctly. Now I'm prepared to admit that maybe removing the light cover has warped/upset it ever so slightly but I know this is not the cause of the noise*. Nor are the bulbs stopping this panel from sitting flush.

Either way I'm looking to replace this light panel cover but Skoda have said I can't buy the piece individually and the whole roof light console is £141.55 +VAT!

Can anyone help me source a brand new one please?

*the noise is actually coming from the rear view mirror cover touching the windscreen and vibrations are generating a creaking and cracking noise. But Skoda ignored this info and focused solely on the fact i'd fitted non standard bulbs.

They did the same thing with the buzzing noise coming from the passenger door. When they saw I'd fitted cameras so had removed the side dash cover they didn't explore the noise issue because they thought it was my cameras and leads. I removed them all on the second visit and low and behold they put the noise down to the B pillar fitting.

So wedge/stick some foam or even a tiny dab of sealer in the gap.

If you want, I have one in black somewhere but the curcuit board for the lighting is damaged. You can build a good unit from the parts though and it neve squeaked when I had it. I repaired the circuit board but my hands weren’t steady enough and over time the vibration killed it again so I just got a good used unit. The panel comes from a sunroof car, but you can pick the best parts of the 2 of them if you want. I would try lining everything on you unit with anti rattle tape first though. Will probably be more effective.

I'd be tempted to simply put some normal bulbs in it and then take it back. You can get suitable bulbs from Philips or Osram for a fiver on Amazon if you didn't chuck the original bulbs in a junk drawer.

Or take the cover off entirely and then ask them how it rattles when it isn't even there.

I did wedge some foam in there but Skoda removed it when they were investigating and ignored my suggestion. I'd like to remove the cover and do a proper job but I can't actually work out how to do it without breaking or scratching anything?

Thank you for the offer. I actually only need the panel with the glass in it. I tryed to put some insulation tape in there but the panel wants to squeeze out either way?

It looks like the mistake I made was popping out this light cover rather than releasing the whole surround from the roof. Propably by squeezing the light cover only it's warped it slightly?

Skoda have had my car for a total of 5 days already in less than 6 months of ownership which is really inconvenient. It's hard to work with them with these noises as they ignore all my suggestions.

Time to name and shame the dealer (not Skoda UK I presume?) who have had your car?

Take the panel out. Put the light cover back on with it out of the car and it should click in nicely. Then screw it back into the car. Might help a little.

I'll give it a try thanks.

Are we talking about just the cover? With the two circles in it for the light to come through?

If you are then the garage are talking nonsense, Ive taken mine off multiple times on both of my last two cars withiut any issue. Surely if the morons are saying thats whats causing the problem then just take it off and the problem noise will go.

Dealers have got some pile of cheek

Yes that's the cover. You are 100% right that once the light cover is removed the noise still occurs. As I say I've identified the mirror cover as the cause as it has no padding so vibration from the windscreen is going through this plastic to the roof lining. Ive proven this by wedging some foam in the small gap and noise went away.

The technician who dropped my car back at showroom made it clear if they do 8hrs work for example then Skoda head office only pay for 4 so the incentive to work on potential warranty issues is not there, especially noise problems. As soon a they noticed I'd fitted LED bulbs they clearly concluded I'd caused the problem so not a warranty fix and no further investigation required. The light cover doesn't quite push in flush as it's curved slightly so wants to squeeze out on one corner. Push the corner and the other side squeezes out slightly. We're talking a couple off mm.

Thats nice of them.

You must have been really unlucky with the cover. Is it visibly bent or just when its fitted? Is there a broken clip on the holder or similar?

Whats your next move? Different dealership?

It is a UK branch but not the dealer I bought from as their not local to me. This causes some issue as there's not alot of incentive for my local dealer especially if their being paid at a reduced rate from Skoda head office because it's warranty work.

Not naming and shaming just yet as I need to work with them still. Although I'm reluctant to go back with my current issues anymore.

The very slight curve is the design. No bend or broken clip. It's just doesn't push flush anymore on corner. If I push this flat it lifts slightly the other side?

No more dealerships, time to solve myself - well with the help of this awesome community!

Hope you can get sorted. Id be happy to remove mine and take a photo of it on a flat surface to compare if it would help.

Mine also sits like that since I replaced the bulbs for led. Just accepted it though. If you manage to source just that bit as a replacement let me know where and how much :)

I think he's happy to accept it, just not accept that Skoda blame it for his rear view mirror rattling.
