Bulb warning light/message showing, but all bulbs OK

Featured Replies

It's happened twice now in the last 2 weeks...

My Bulb Warning light is illuminated on the dash, and the message quickly flashes up on the maxi-dot for a split second, telling me that I have a bulb out!

On both occasions I have gone round the car, and checked every bulb (including the license plate bulbs) and everything seems okay! Headlights (all 4x H7's - high and low beam, Rear light cluster and the front side lights too) DRL's, Fogs (front and rear) Indicators, Brakes and Reverse... every bulb is functioning as it should...

I've not replaced any bulb with an LED equivalent, as I've had problems with the CANBUS throwing a flid before!

On turning off the ignition, removing the key, and then restarting the car the error is cleared!

Could it be a forewarning of a bulb 'about to blow' or could the bulb warning system be faulty??

You might need to check bulb by bulb again,  i have had to occasionally, 2nd time around by luck no longer an issue, especially brake tail light bulbs for a good connection and no corrosion.

Reg Plate bulbs as well.

Rather common that while they appear A OK and working that the connection is not good.

Also check all fuses nice and tight and secure.

(Not on your car but with a vRS it can often be a DRL / Sidelight units earth that is the cause.)

PS

Not sure because 'electrickery' is all magic to me,

but someone might know if the brake light switch can be a cause of bulb warnings.

I’ve noticed on some VW Group cars, thet the “sprung” contact material used is too strong and probably zinced steel, and because it is too strong, it crushes the solder contacts on bulbs leading to intermittent contact - at times, a complete design failure in my book.

I have seen threads where models with the turny headlights or foglights can produce warnings... You don't have this option, by any chance?

Noop... I've got a 2013 (13 plate) Greenline II Estate (facelift model)

Could it just be a sensor has gotten damp (it's been raining constantly with sometimes temperatures of 2 or 3 C)

It's weird that it clears if I turn the car off and start it again! (CANBUS isn't based on Microsoft Windows is it!!?? :biggrin: )

I would not bet against that being the case!

Start your car and press the brake pedal, then turn your lights on then everything else, it usually pops up on the dash once you’ve actually used the bulb.

I had the exact same problem on my Octavia. The cause was the tip of the drl bulbs being gradually fretted away by vibration in the plastic bumper.

I took out the bulbs and built up the tip again with solder.

It took four years from new to first getting an intermittent bulb out warning and another month before it would come off and then off again for days at a time.

I have the exact same problem with my 2015 Skoda Octavia Scout.  Dash warning light flashes for brake light (I think it specifically says which side).  I've checked over and over again.  All the lights work.  It's got an MOT in 3 days and it'll be more than annoying if it fails due to the warning light - maybe I should just change the bulb anyway.

Could it be that the break light is failing when I drive the car?  This would perhaps correspond to a lose connection as currently I'm checking when the vehicle is stationary and therefore there is no vibration.

An orange triangle appeared in dashboard today. Says right brake light not working. Can this be right. I can’t check as no one to ask to look as I press pedal.

You don't need to check, just open each taillight in turn and replace each brake light bulb, keep the one that's not blown as a spare.

I have just had a look for you and it is right 🤣

Ask a silly question.....................................

The serious answer is that it is often a dodgy contact on the bulbholder if the warning is intermittent.

I’ve had a go at doing bulb myself. As I was about to change bulb, I thought they’d sold me wrong one as it was double filament. So I went back and got single filament. Confused to which one it is. Even owner’s manual doesn’t say 🤦🏼‍♀️

Turn the sidelights on, it'll be the red lens that isn't illuminated, same both sides.

I know what position the brake light is

but when I went to euro car parts, I think they sold me wrong bulbs. They gave me double filament but I thought it was single

Ok, I read your post to mean you didn't know which light it was, if you do know then just look at the bulb that's in it at the moment.

Hi

All sorted today. Bought one of each  bulb and my son did the hard work of fitting.
Thanks for your help. Until another problem
