Thanks Fin

Looking at Scout info I cant find a difference in boot dimensions ..

But 7J rim is too wide/deep for my car...

Im thinking the skoda dealer was just meaning it is restricted height of 6 or 6.5J width....after that it must be a space saver...or repair kit inflator which mine is supplied with.

Would actually really like a full set of scout 17's...and maybe as Brad suggests build a false floor...

Driving into rural switzerland soon and the extra ground clearance would be beneficial.

Cheers

So you are thinking of fitting 225/50r17?  We don't get the 4x4 here so please refresh my memory.  Compared to an Elegance or the lower vRS what's the hub to wheel arch distance of the 4x4?  Is it  15mm higher than an Elegance, the same or 15mm lower?

Have you checked your speedometer against a GPS to see what the large diameter wheel will do for speedometer accuracy?

I'm really confused by your thought processes.  All you have to do is duplicate your existing tyre and rim combination.  You could even remove a wheel assembly off your car and try it in your spare wheel well to see if it fits.  It's as simple as that.

If you decide to go for a larger diameter tyre (like on the Scout then your spare needs to match that so that the driveline isn't compromised by an excessive difference in tyre diameter both on the axle and front to back.

My 2012 Scout with 17" rims verses a SatNav GPS shows the car speedo is 4mph out at 70mph. (ie GPS = 70mph, car = 74mph). So I can only guess that the speedo is set up for 16" rims.

On my 16" winter wheels 30mph was reading approx 36/37mph via satnav, and the local Mind Your Speed thingy.

40 and 70mph were also reading 6/7mph over, so it was pretty consistent!

On my 17" wheels it's about 3 or 4 mph over.

@brad1.8T Prepping for a trip accros europe and didn't want to leave without a proper spare wheel...rang the dealer..they seemed unsure?? as to size and availability

asked here...have now got answers.

In the process, I have thought about maybe a set of Scout wheels, which would simply give me more ground clearance, which would be useful...

My puzzlement was partly due to thinking the spare wheel had to be the same size as the rest of the wheels fitted..but as pointed out in this thread the spare is a 16" regardless of whats fitted as standard 17" or 18"s etc

I'm still a bit puzzled as to how the haldex copes over a long distance with an odd sized spare wheel fitted...but I guess it must be ok.

For now, I'm happy running with my original 15's and my new 15" spare and tool kit.

cheers

Just make sure that your rolling radius is the same or your car will pull towards the smaller wheel.

There are online tools to work out the rolling radius.

All I can assume, is the 4x4's out there running 17's or bigger,  only have a 16" spare....so it must be ok to run the smaller wheel as a spare ?

What size is your spare Chris?

Without checking I've no idea.

I would think just for short distances; to get the punctured tyre repaired or replaced.

You also have to consider you would have a 17" wheel taking up space in the boot.

It is the same overall diameter.

The diameter of the wheel is immaterial.  The important part is the diameter of the tyre.  By varying the aspect ratio of the sidewall the same overall diameter (within a tolerance)  is maintained.

I run 18"x7.5" rims with 225/40r18 tyres.  I had a puncture on Saturday (again!).  My spare is 16x6.5 with a 205/55r16 tyre.  The overall diameter is 6mm difference which is less than what wears off the tyre from new to worn (~10mm).

BTW the 18" rim/tyre fits in the spare wheel perfectly for diameter and about 10mm proud.  If I got some carpet or underlay and built up the surrounding area it would be unnoticeable to most people.

Just a quick thanks for all the input.

Got set up now and feel more secure knowing i have a spare wheel and tools in the boot should anything happen.

Cheers
