If I wanted to buy brake cylinders...

Featured Replies

Yes, I think all the drum brakes use the same wheel cylinders.

Many suppliers give a choice of ferrous (cast iron or steel, not sure which) or non ferrous (aluminium). Is it worth paying the extra for ferrous?

Well, both cast iron and steel are ferrous metals, and have similar density. Aluminium is lower density, and there's not much spare space around a typical wheel cylinder. I'd reckon that the extra possibility for sacrificial corrosion of the aluminium and lack of any obvious way to dissipate heat inside a drum makes a ferrous wheel cylinder more desirable.

Someone may be able to give more clarity, but Carparts4less offer 2 options, Pagid or Bosch, and if photos are correct Pagid has 1 fastener, Bosch has 2. When buying for my old 56 1.4 TDI I needed the ones with single screw so suggest you look at your backplate.

I’ve looked at both, and they look to have one screw on7F71989C-F463-4DE1-810A-ED3DB793F966.thumb.png.19b29a8c8b2f7ed770dcf77f01b33567.png

Image over end of text line, but the 2nd one has 2 screws - one either side of bleed nipple - to hold it to the backplate, the 1st has only one.

Cylinder with two holes will fit both sides, cylinder with one hole will be handed.

Probably.

I don't think they are handed because the part number is the same for both sides. I know mine had only one screw when I replaced them.

Yeah, the bolt hole is in the same place on both sides. As Sep says though, the cylinder with two holes will probably still fit.
