Spark plugs torque setting

Featured Replies

I have read my service book and owners manual and can find no info on the correct torque settings for a fabia mk1 1.2 htp 2006.

Can anybody advise?

Thanks

6-valve or 12-valve engine?  It'll say 12V on the engine cover if it's one of those, it probably won't have an engine cover if it's a 6-valve.

Reason I ask is that on the 6-valve engines, the spark plug recesses are very good dirt/grit traps, and it's well worth making a DIY fine nozzle for a vacuum cleaner to try to clean out the area around each plug before and after removing, and before installing the new ones. Otherwise you risk trapping grit under the sealing washer.

Can still happen on the 12-valve engines, but they are much better protected from  road grit by being central within the head, rather than at the front.

I'm pretty sure Haynes says 30Nm for the torque, but the official info says 20...30Nm, which seems rather vague.

When the torque is unknown I've always used the finger tight and 1/2 a turn, which was the recommended tightness by NGK. They also provide the chart below too for specific diameter spark plugs

square.gif Tightening torque

Plug thread diameter Tightening torque
18 mm 35 to 40N·m (3.5 to 4.0 kgm)
14 mm 25 to 30N·m (2.5 to 3.0 kgm)
12 mm 15 to 20N·m (1.5 to 2.0 kgm)
10 mm 10 to 12N·m (1.0 to 1.2 kgm)
8 mm 8 to 10N·m (0.8 to 1.0 kgm)

Its the 12v engine.  ngk 6893 plugs which are 14mm - so that makes it a vague 25-30nm :)

Thanks for the rapid replies guys

It's not vague, just not critical, as long as the sealing ring is crushed and it's tight enough so that it doesn't come undone then it's fine.

The most important thing is not to over tighten them and risk stripping threads in the head, hence the upper limit of 30Nm.
