EPC light and juddering

Featured Replies

I have  14 plate Skoda Octavia 1.4 tsi.  Last week I had a MOT & service on it, on the advisory it mention about all 4 coil packs boots split.  Over the last few days the car was intermittently juddering under power.  Today, after filling with petrol it started juddering a lot and then engine management light flashed on and off for about 30 secs, then went out completely, now the EPC light has come on and the warning system is saying Stop Start fault.

Obviously I will have to take back to the garage tomorrow (10 mins drive away), but I want to know what other owners and experts think ..

Would split coil packs boot suddenly cause the EPC light to come on ?

coil packs split will cause emissions control errors and engine power control errors (EPC).

It's amazing the garage found them just split and the straight away you have problems, after having non all winter.

Potentially were they damaged during removal, or maybe not put back correctly when they were checked?

Did they change the sparks and if so did they use the right ones and gap them correctly (Some come pre gapped, but not all)?

As they're easy to change, I'd be checking the garage didn't mess up and if it is likely then then I would be tempted to buy the parts and the tool (or a suitable equivalent) and DIY it, to save yourself the labour.

Worth getting a VCDS scan from a friendly local to confirm it's the coils/engine misfire.

Do you think it is safe to drive to garage (10 mins drive)  or should I call RAC to get it there ?

Honestly couldn't answer that as depending on the EPC fault it can cause cat damage.

FWIW, if there isn't a call out fee, the RAC will do the diagnosis for you and not charge you £60, or look on the briskoda map for a VCDS member near you.
