A couple of new owner questions please

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have recently purchased a late 2018 Skoda Superb 2.0TDI SEL Exec and overall, very please with it.

Could more experienced users reassure me please with a few observations:

1). When driving at night, if I drive over a pot hole or very rough surface, I have noticed the head light(s) pattern appears to shake / vibrate.  It's as if the bulb might be loose in the housing.  Has anyone else experienced this please ?

2). When I switch the engine off, at my final destination, the main Columbus display stays on for a long time - usually until I open the driver's door - is this usual ?

3). When I turn on the radio, the volume is always muted - I have to turn-up the volume. (Not a biggy, just a bit annoying !).

4). I am thinking about investing in rear window blinds - there is a company in Nottinghamshire, (Car Shades), who offer a set of 4 x tailored blinds for £86.00.  Anyone used them and how good is the fit ?  (It's a lot of money but don't mind if they offer a good, quality fit)

Many thanks and I look forward to your replies.

1) with Xenon lights? I’ve noticed this as well on mine, I have a feeling it’s due to the inner workings of the lights. (Arc forming and all that.)

2) That sounds perfectly normal to me. Radio and Infotainment screen stay on until you open the door.

3) I can remember this being a setting in the infotainment “somewhere”.

1&2 as above

3 there is a switch on volume setting in the radio menu.

1. There headlamps are articulated to shape/dip the headlight beam to spare oncoming traffic. So I believe you are seeing this moving as its jostled.

2. Yes. I suppose they think if you haven't left yet, you want to play with it.

additional info

1- yes my car does that

4- I have carshades blinds in my car (2016 SE Business estate) as I didn't think the tinting was dark enough to keep the sun off mutley- only fitted them to load area windows. There is a visible join on tailgate window. They fit well and have not fallen off.

Do all L&K Superbs have smart light assist?

Yes can see the xenon beam rattle / vibrate when going over harsh bumps

Hi again,

Thank you for all of your replies - I am suitably reassured !, however I noticed another potential issue at the weekend.....

My car has a Sunroof.... I washed the car at the weekend and when on a drive later in the day - I had the sunroof on the "tilt" setting.

There was a strange sound - like a water lapping noise coming from the sun roof area, as if water had collected in that area.

I opened the roof fully and the noise went away.  Similarly, with the roof closed - no sound.

When I stopped the car, I had a good look but couldn't see anything.

Any ideas please ?

Man thanks

Well if the lights are in auto mode and I push the headlight stick forward I get high beam and not high beam auto. I can't seem to make high beam assist work. I also seem to have the eye lash lights but don't seem to get SLA. Is there a light on the dash or a menu item I can see to indicate the system is enabled. If I look in the menu where all the other 'assist' items are listed then I don't see anything todo with headlights.

There is a sub menu for lights. Mine doesn't have high beam assist so I have no idea unfortunately.

I have had them on for a year now and no issues. I bought the car 2 years old and it didn't have the tinted windows.

Perfect fit.  First picture car in the garage,  Interior lights switched on to show the difference

I don't have a sunroof on the Skoda, but many years ago I had a Rover SD1 with said accessory.

I, too, heard the sound of water slopping around, but did nothing about it until the day I got a deluge on my head during some spirited cornering.

On investigation, the rubber drain tubes down the A and C pillars were choked with rust flakes (it was an old car by then) and didn't properly drain the drip pan below the sunroof.

They were also a bit twisted/kinked which didn't help, but once I cleaned and straightened them I never had the problem again.

I can't see your, much newer, car having this problem, but you could always check by sticking the car in Park or any manual gear and rocking the car fore and aft with the handbrake off.

If there's any appreciable amount of water you should hear it slop back and forth.

It may have been parked for a while under trees or where there's a lot of dust or debris around that's blocked the drain tubes during transit to the UK.

Mine has a sunroof and is 2½ years old, but I've not had any problems with the roof yet.

Thank you for your replies - it looks like the Sunroof Drain Tubes are worth investigating.

Anyone any idea how to access them please.

Cheers

I got rid of my sunroof when I sold my Disco 3, and will not have another sunroof again! Everything I say is what I've learnt from having Land Rover products for a number of years.

The seal around the glass of the sunroof will NOT prevent all water from getting past it, just the majority. The sunroof mounting bracket will have drain tubes, normally one at each corner. They can be hard to see if they're behind mouldings or air dams and such like. The way to test is to slowly pour water into the part of the housing that is designed to funnel water to the drain tubes and make sure they work. You can try parking on a slight slope to test front or rear drains individually.

If you find one or more drain tubes are blocked, you can try shoving something into the hole to clear it, but you need to be aware of two things: 1. The drain tubes might only be a push fit, so if the blockage is substantial, you might just push the entire hose off the mounting, and 2. the mounting may only be plastic and might snap, solving the original problem, but creating a new one as you will now get a wet headlining. If you're fairly confident the tubes are dry, you can try to guess where the blockage is if you can't see it, by measuring how much water it takes to fill the drain.

Possibly the best way to clear blockages may be to push compressed air into the tubes.

Like I say, this is all Land Rover experience, your mileage may vary!

Manwithhabits- you old cynic thinking very car is like a Land Rover!  I had a Disco3 for 7 years and 174k miles. Best car I’ve owned for what it could do. But was costing a fortune to keep going!

A brief period with a bmw followed - but now with a superb. Hopefully this will be as good (or nearly - it won’t off road like the disco!) but cost a lot less - it’s using about half the amount of fuel so far!

as for the OP - everything sounds pretty normal to me!

Do you still get fairly good visibility out of the rear window for reversing with the blinds on??

Do they not move or fall when you open the tailgate?

Thanks :-)
