Skoda Yeti vibrations

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm having a problem with my 2010 4x4 TDI2.0 Skoda yeti. It vibrates quite a lot when full (pedal to the medal) acceleration at between 80km/h - 100km/h (50mph - 62mph) speed. It happens almost every time when accelerating, but gear must be 4, 5 or 6. No problems if I accelerate from 80km/h (50mph) with third gear. It doesn't shake and vibrate when driving normally or accelerating normally.

Vibration takes about 4-5 seconds and then it stops. After 100km/h there is no shaking or weird vibration at all. Vibration feels in every where. It's not just a steering wheel or front side of the car. Whole car feels to be vibrating when it happens. It happens with two different set of tyres so tyres are not causing this.

I took my car to local workshop. They couldn't find any reason for it's vibration.

Any ideas where to look and what to do? By the way, is there a way to turn Yeti from 4WD to 2WD. Maybe fuse to remove or something. That would be interesting to test if 4WD has something to do with it.

@Hilleri You have how a Haldex works backwards. The car is FrontWD until it detects slip, when the Haldex clutch engages to supply torque to the rear wheels.

If it's on or past 40_000 miles (64_000 km) and you don't have evidence that this has been done, the Haldex is due an oil change anyway.

Oh yes stupid me. That's how haldex works. So basically when I'm driving 80km/h and I full accelerate on dry road it does not probably use 4WD. I'm quite sure. :)

Haldex oil has been changed at right kilometers. Car has been driven 185 000km in nine years.

What else it could be? Any ideas?

@Hilleri - Rare, but free to check. If you've had any new tyres recently, check that they are actually the same declared size as the others. And that is me out of ideas. At least my ideas weren't expensive!

Tyres check. Both Winter and summer tire sets  all have same size tyres.

This might be x-files stuff...

Could it be the clutch going?  Sounds like you are only having the problem when putting high loads through the drivetrain.  When was the clutch last changed?

I understand there is a guibo coupling  -

No there isn't.

IIRC there is a fuse for the Haldex.  I think it was mentioned in one of the Haldex clutch pump failure threads.  I'll maybe see if I can dig it out later.

Today I took my yeti to yearly vehicle inspection. Car was lifted up, inspected and we couldn't find any problems. Yearly vehicle inspection in here where I live really checks and makes sure that car has no faults which could cause problems or accidents in traffic. So, Yeti passed inspection 100%. All drive shafts are fine. All brakes were perfect. Suspension has no problems. I also saw cardan and both ends of it looks good.  I'm not sure what is right english word to describe the back end of cardan (?)..this part I guess..

This part is in perfect condition cause it has been replaced couple weeks ago. There is that rubber part in it which was broken. We thought that it would solve vibration issues but that did not help for the vibration at all. Front side of cardan looks normal, car workshop or inspection couldn't find any issues there at all.

Today I came home and it shakes and vibrates ..what can I say.."normally". I noticed that I can get it vibrate also with pushing gas pedal 50%. So I do not have to make full acceleration like I earlier said. Stopped to get a coffee and while driving home I tried to make it vibrate but couldn't success. So now it seems that it happens nearly every time but ..still not every time.

- does not occure every time, but happens 80% of time

- happens only at 4th, 5th or 6th gear

- happens when speed is over 80km/h and under 100km/h

- happens with full and half throttle, speed and gear only matters

It's normally called a "rotoflex joint" or a metalastic coupling as far as I know. And, for information, "cardan shaft" is valid usage.

aka a "giubo".  Note the spelling: presumably the explanation behind freedie's post.  That, and the fact that "giubo coupling" is pretty much tautological even when spelled correctly, "giubo" being a contraction of the Italian for "Boschi joint" (Boschi being the guy who invented it, allegedly).
