squeaking squealing TDI

Featured Replies

Hi all,

i have this squeaking sound from the engine of a 2016 octavia 1.6 TDI. you can hear it at

i have replaced the following in the last 2 months:

- serpentine belt

- the tensioner for serpentine belt

- alternator pulley

mileage on car is 85000KM.

but still experience the squeaking sound. what else could it be?

Did they do the water pump when they did the cambelt and pilot and did they also replace the tensioner?

I have not changed the timing belt and it's tensioner. Neither did I change the water pump. Do they sound like the video when it goes bad?

Possible clue.

Sounds like a timing belt tensioner to me. Had a similar issue on another non-skoda but still VAG car.

I had a similar noise with my 2L TDI.

It was either on the auxiliary side or the cambelt side of the engine. The garage remove the auxillary belt and the squeel was still there. So had the timing belt kit and water pump replaced. Both noise and worry of a failing timing belt gone.

TPI available for noisy tensioners

Fixed price servicing is cheaper than a fix minus tpi discount (crazy I know)

my tensioner made that noise, so got belt, tensioner, pulleys and water pump done.

if you have not done cambelt, what’s the serpentine belt? I read that as cambelt.

i tend to think it’s the tensioner and yes there is a tpi.

Serpentine belt = Auxiliary drive belt, the one driving the alternator, water and aircon pumps

Waterpump is driven by the cambelt and the aux belt is just a triangle so it doesn’t snake.

the cambelt does snake and I had heard it referred to as serpentine before.

I guess that’s why I had it backwards, but it doesn't really matter as long as the right one was done.

Sorry, water pump is driven by cambelt.

Aux belt does snake if you have a/c

The aux belt guide roller is not a tensioner BTW but I have a feeling the OP may think it is as he also changed the alternator pulley which presumably is clutched.

My wife makes a similar noise when I accelerate too quickly (in the car for xman).:inlove:

Well fair does, not looked at an aux belt since the mk1. I am quite happy with cam/timing belt and aux belt names myself, but hey :)

either way it does sound like the tensioner on the cambelt to me. Worth talk to a main dealer.

This is the timing belt diagram. I didn't change any of the above.

I changed the belt, tensioning roller, and alternator pulley in this accessory component drive diagram.

What else could be making the squeaky sound?

The car has only done 85000KM, 2.5 years. Wouldn't it be too early to change timing belt?

There is a tpi out for tensioner/pully that fails early, first presenting with a squeak.

If ignored it could get serious and result in timing failure and so potentially engine failure.

i have just had to do mine for this reason. When you’re doing it you might as well do the water pump at the same time.

Ok I am not in UK. Could you share details on what are the tensioner/pulley listed in this tpi?

It’s the tensioning roller and two idle rollers in the first diagram of the timing belt I believe.

You must change the belt as well at the same time and you might as well get the water pump done while you’re down there.

So what happened was that the Mechanic poured some water on the aux belt and the squeaking stopped. Therefore it can't be an issue with the timing belt.

He said he would need to remove the aux belt and tensioner to re check.

Hi,

So what was the reason of this sound finally?

  • 1 year later...

I have similar issue with my Octavia 1.6 TDI 65 Reg, the chirping sound coming out from the engine and goes away after driving the car for a while but i noticed it only happens during cold weather and when the car is idle and not moving.  When I got it checked by a mechanic, he thought it was to do with the tensioner + belt so replaced both but the sound still there. The mechanic is now suggesting to  change the time-belt + water-pump after diagnosing the car for several hours, he thinks the sound is coming out from the side where the time-belt is located. The car has only done 40K not sure if changing the time belt would eliminate the sound. Any idea what the reason for the sound?
