Bear with me, i will explain...

Featured Replies

Hi all, seeking some advice on my insurance, many thanks in advance, advice is greatly appreciated.

(Not posted on here in a while, life happened...)

I called to change my address on the policy, explaining my situation and so on as currently i dont have a fixed address for myself im basically sofa surfing between family, but the car is being kept at my parents house and i dont permanently reside here, for now.

The car being at a fixed address was apparent to me their only concern because the operator kept on about where is the car being kept, but i may be wrong?

So i go over my situation, explaining everything, was told i'd be expecting a phone call, nothing. So i check my emails, to find thay they have cancelled my policy due to "A problem with your risk criteria".

That is all it mentions, I have not chased it up, as i have never had this happen before and appear to not have a leg to stand on.

I maybe missing the point? But the car is at a fixed address overnight and never gets kept anywhere else, so what is the problem with my risk criteria here?

Im annoyed because there is only just over a month remaining on my policy and this would have landed me another years no claims, but they have cancelled it. Im not trying to commit fraud for cheaper insurance as the area isnt exactly top 10 places to live either.

On the note of cancellation, is this something i now have to declare when finding other insurance and will it affect my premiums in future, even though ive done absolutely nothing wrong?

Many thanks again in advance,

1Rapid.

Seems like you are stuffed now.

Bit late but you should just have changed your 'Postal Address' to your parents home and that being also where the car gets parked overnight.

You made a declaration though as 'no fixed abode'.

Explain the 'cancelled insurance' with other Brokers / Insurers.

That that was a mis-understanding and a Twa-t call handler.

Best get that cleared up with those that Cancelled...

That is all i wanted to do, but me being me and too honest i now guess ive shot myself in the foot.

Thanks for the reply

Phone them asap and tell them there has been a misunderstanding. Tell them your present address is now your parents and the car is kept there overnight, (provided that is substantially true)

They are only interested in the whereabouts of your car overnight, you can sleep wherever you like , its none of their business, but its important to have an address that you call home that your car also resides at.

Ask politely if they will reinstate your policy or if they won't, ask for a quote for a new policy.

Ask for a written declaration of your No claims entitlement, it will be needed if you go to another insurer.

Spoken to them, explaining this all again.

They are insisting on where the car is kept overnight is my parents house i have said yes as in the previous phone call when i got the cancellation, because it is, my car rarely even travels these days.

Apparently have to wait 24 hours for feedback on this. But it is looking like i will just have to get another policy.

Thanks again for the advice, much appreciated.

Would definitely keep chasing it up if you have the time. You may find some insurers will now refuse your custom as you have had insurance cancelled or refused......

Who are you insured with? Yes you are a higher risk for them based on what you have declared, but I think they need to give you more clarity to why you are a greater risk criteria as they are not being specific here and seem to be taking the easy option out.

I've always wondered how the travelling community get their insurance, vehicle registration etc with no fixed abode....there is surely a way to do it.?

Simples, they either don't get any or they just lie.

Police regard them as untouchables for fear of reprisals.

@xman  Is this any particular police forces that you know of are are you just going on some internet myth?

Vehicles get checked often enough, are registered to an address, have insurance, and keepers will have a 'postal address'.

Commonly lovely new vehicles, cars, vans, pickup's, and Motor Homes and LGV's or HGV's.

Well known in my area, I have had lots of dealings with them over my lifetime, both good and bad.

If you phone the police about a serious issue expect a response delay of 24hrs or longer or referal to the council.

Illegal encampments, not so common nowadays, are the council's problem, usually take two weeks to serve the proper legal papers by which time they've moved on. Police not involved.

Untouchable around here. I suppose there must be plenty that are law abiding though.

How do you serve a NIP on someone with no fixed abode? You might find vehicles registered to a postbox address.

@xman

No idea where this lawless area is that you frequent.   That must be pretty not travelling travellers if they just hang around there.

Plenty of other non traveller motor law breakers seemingly never pulled up around here, false number plates (I've witnessed swapping in car parks), missing/blacked out plates, no mot, so presumably no insurance, antisocial modded undeclared, plenty of old guys rewriting their number plates changing letters and numbers, changing fonts and sizes. Petrol theft from stations is no longer a police issue.

Then there are certain folk who think driving dangerously while heavily intoxicated or under influence of drugs is OK, police do stop them sometimes, if they are not stuck in the office with paperwork. (Or dancing with ECO warriors in London)

Sounds like Glasgow?

Sounds nothing like the wealth travellers that i see with 68 / 19 Plate vehicles and crystal palace tin homes.

That must be the dregs around your way. Poor pickings i suppose.

When I'm asked a question I'm not sure of the implications, I probably ask five back. Because I'm always wondering how that info will be used back, or in the assessment.

I have two cars at the moment, one has to be on the drive overnight the other does not. Both the same insurer/underwriter. One policy can't have vehicles on the road the other can, because the latter is an old policy that I'm renewing.

Glad you got it sorted and thank you for sharing! We're wiser through the sum of our knowledge.
