POWER STEERING Adjustment Question

Featured Replies

Hi everyone :-)

I have a Skoda Fabia 2003 1.4 estate. I have a disability which makes it hard to turn the wheel on my car. I was reading this here on this page about how you can adjust the power steering https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/236545-power-steering-adjustment/

I need the steering to have more assistance.

Do you think this tool will work? https://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-Cable-KKL-VAG-COM-409-1-OBD2-II-OBD-Diagnostic-Scanner-VW-Audi-Seat-VCDS/292561292715?_trkparms=aid%3D888007%26algo%3DDISC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131227121020%26meid%3Dba4b66f66a734467a328e71ba9188f05%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D222731644761%26itm%3D292561292715&_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982

It does not say anywhere in the listing that you need windows Vista or older.

Just be aware that any scammed/copied stuff like this is just ripped off from VCDS and no payment is being received by RossTech from that seller, the clue is in "VAG COM 409.1" - now I am not going to judge you or how you spend your money, but generally speaking, it is not considered good/smart/clever to discuss the purchase or use of that sort of device on any of the established VW Group motoring forums as most users of VCDS have paid up front for a legal version of it and receive excellent support from RossTech.

Maybe, instead of buying this, try to locate a VCDS owner/user local to you and ask them to make this change for you - there are many reg'd owners of VCDS out there worldwide.

Thank you for your info. Yes, I agree its best to purchase something which is not copied.

It would be very helpful to know if VAG COM 409.1 software will actually work on windows 8?

So I dont purchase something I cant use.

Seriously,  it isn't pirated software it's the licence free version so it's not unlocked and therefore isn't illegal.

I dont think I will be able to do it myself with the tool I have ordered. So I will deliver my car to the local Skoda dealer to do the job next week.

However, they could not guarantee that they would be able to make the steering lighter. The dealer will find this out when I deliver the car next week. They will attempt to make the steering lighter with a code.

It would be very helpful if anyone could tell me on this forum for sure that the steering assistance can in fact be altered on my Skoda Fabia 1.4 2003 auto ? This is the first generation Fabia without facelift which came in 2004. If someone can confirm to me that it is possible to alter the steering assist on my generation Fabia. I would appreciate to know the model year your car is.

Appreciate answers on this.

Yes you can recode for more or less assistance, I have a 2004 2.0 which I recoded for speed sensitive minimum assist to improve feedback when driven hard.

Thank you for your info. However, my car is before facelift which came in 2004. Do you know if it is possible on 2003 models too?

Ok good. Your car is not facelifted. I will report back what the dealer say next week. They will attempt to to the job but they could not guarantee that they could do it. But thanks for the info.

What has the dealer said they will charge for trying (and maybe not even succeeding) to do this for you?

Won't it be cheaper to buy a suitable third-party cable (e.g. from ebay), download VCDS lite from Ross-tech, then register it for USD99?

Then you could do it yourself, and have ongoing diagnostic and coding capability.

Are you sure that VCDS lite, even when reg'd with RossTech can be used to perform adaption?

Edit:- I'm asking for that to be cleared up so that the OP does not waste their money as their only current "want" is to change the adaption in the power steering controller.

Yes, I have the registered version of VCDS Lite, it works just fine.

So I'm absolutely 100% certain of what I'm saying.

Yes, see here for the various capabilities of versions:

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Functions

It may even be possible with unregistered version, judging by the "Yes" in the Code Module row. Worth a try anyway.

No but the facelift makes no difference.

Changed mine (on the Polo) from 10140 to 10120 this morning, using this cable and my registered copy of VCDS lite.

Haven't tried it yet weight-wise, but the change appeared to 'stick' through an ignition off/on cycle.

Good result then from VCDS Lite, I think that as time passed, RossTech must have changed the level of functionality that VCDS Lite offered, like offering this level of functionality if the registration fee was paid. I was sure that originally VCDS Lite came as freeware from RossTech as a free introduction to VCDS and some people would then pay to convert it to the usual VCDS level. So now VCDS can still keep owners of only pre 2006 happy without needing to pay out the big money that brought with it VCDS's full functionality and coverage up to a much later date of car. I'd think that once again that option will appear for owners of cars up to 201? when my fully paid up VCDS becomes "time limited" !

Yep, and as I said upthread a bit, according to the function chart, even unregistered VCDS lite appears to be capable of coding modules (which is what I did to make this change).  Well worth a try I would have thought, rather than handing over large sums to a dealer.

Thank you for trying to help me save money. I would like to do it myself, but I dont know where to start. I have ordered the cheap tool from the link I listed above.

However, this probably wont work on windows 8.

So for me to try to do it myself. I need very specific instructions of what product I need. And where I get it. I dont think I can do it without knowing this for sure. Then I will waste more money than neccesary. I have no experience of VCDS. However, I understand what you mean by the code you changed this morning. So its not difficult if you can get it to work.

Do you know if it is the same codes on the mk 1 Skoda Fabia? Mine is 2003. Then I could tell the dealer the correct code if they dont know.

Slightly different, I think, but the same digit of the coding needs changing, and the other 4 digits leaving as they are.
For maximum steering assistance, the fourth digit needs changing from whatever it currently is, to a 6; from what I've read.
