Repairing Crash damage - advice please

Featured Replies

Evening Folks,

2007 Octavia Estate has failed its MOT on headlamp alignment. Investigation reveals previous owner had collision on nearside. The headlamp carrier (plastic guide platform is missing) and headlamps was held in by cable ties. Bracket that headlamp carrier attaches to is bent. My dilemma is trying to get bracket requires removing some 12 point screws. Picture attached. Anyone have any knowledge what size these might be so I can source the correct size bit to remove them?

Also, apart from the main dealers where might I find a new bracket if I cannot straighten the original one?

As a temporary measure to get you thriugh the MOT, have you tried realigning the beam by adjusting the two nylon hex adjusters -they allow quite a wide range of adjustment, the outer one is up/down and inner is left/right IIRC. Pointing car at wall or garage door on level ground and adjust projected beam while on dip, height to match other side and left/right to point more or less straight ahead. MOT places often will do this alignment free of charge . Did they try or even offer?

Been there, done that :)

The 12-point screws are a VAG special - I believe also known by the US as "triple square".  When I did mine I looked for an available bit set but they were silly money and a long way away, so I chose the knockometer and cold chisel route to removing them and ordered a torx replacement set from skoda-parts (also available via UK outlets).  I couldn't find a torque setting so I used "reasonable force".

BTW I've just done a fleabay search and found a set of 12-point bits available for good money here, but the auction closes in about 90 minutes.

I can find you the part number and post it later if that helps, or you could go to your local fastener store and but some high tensile M10x28 bolts of the right length and use those instead.

Cheers for the advice, I have tried my Torx fittings and they weren't man enough, The TH40 started to round off.The eBay 12 point bits look like they will do the job providing they are the right sizes.

Only one way to find out I suppose. I let you knowhow I get on.

Found the original order:

That is a generic Torx set.

TS needs a XZN bit, also known as spline bit (hex is a 7, XZN is 12)

I would suggest something like this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xzn-Screwdriver-Bit-Set-Pieces/dp/B00154JJS4

This includes M10 spline bits.

(If you want to do some more DIY on VAG you might buy M14 as well)

As for the parts: not a local scrapyard with a O2 for parts?

You can get multi spline like this from Halfords. I have a set in my tool box

Morning all,

thanks for the all the advice thus far. Have obtained the necessary 12 star bit but still awaiting the delivery of the metal bracket that supports the headlamp base. Current bracket is buckled and U/S. Will update you all when the work is completed (soon hopefully)

Update:-

One bolt came out very easily. The one with the damaged head needed teasing out with a cold chisel and hammer. Both out and damaged bracket removed. Just need to get new bolts to fit new bracket and await the plastic headlamp guide/ base before refitting and re-aligning the headlamps.
