1.4 TSI 150. Surprisingly good performance

Featured Replies

I've now had my Octavia estate for a few weeks. I continue to be impressed by the driveability/response, performance and fuel economy.

It really isn't lacking in any way for day to day driving and, if you use the gears a bit (although it is flexible), it can be positively brisk, especially for a fairly anonymous car with no (outward or inward) sporting pretensions or even any sort of trim badges other than Octavia.

Even fully laden, it has a reasonably  gutsy turn of speed.

Grunt from tickover is obviously not as great as with a larger turbo diesel, but on the move it seems to punch above its weight.

I've owned faster cars (and bikes), and even had a remapped Mk1 VRS,  but It certainly makes good use of what it has.

It would be interesting to see if the power/torque is only as claimed.

I know what you mean. Our other car is the 1.5TFSI 150 in the Audi A3. We swapped to that from a Polo 1.8GTi and a Golf GTD.  The Audi feels as though it has as much useable power as the other two cars. Certainly not on paper, but out on the road it does so.  The smaller capacity turbo units are certainly sweet to drive...

engine does 163hp ... measured few times, in Golf and Octavia.

And is a little bit quicker in flying race, compared to my 2.0 diesel. Tested few times. Advantage in weight.

I have a 1.5tsi and I agree it's fairly punchy. I'll still be remapping it when revo or superchips releases new maps though.

Agree with the above, have swapped the Citigo for a Golf Mk7 1.4 TSI DSG (must update my sig) and, for real world driving and most overtakes, it is as effective as the vRS 220.  Only once really pressing on does the vRS show the extra 70 horses.

The 1.4 TSI is a hugely impressive lump.

I’ll save my Golf vs Octy thoughts for another time!

Another huge thumbs-up for the 1.4 TSI, we have it in our Kodiaq, and it's still punchy enough dragging the behemoth around!

It's so refined, almost silent, smooth too. The manual gearbox really helps, its possible to change gear so seamlessly. If it wasn't for the rev counter needle dropping I wouldn't even know the stop/start had kicked in :D

I deliberately ordered the Kodiaq just before they closed the order books for the summer shutdown last year, afterwhich the 1.4 TSI was replaced with the 1.5 TSI.

Additional demands for economy mean the 1.5 TSI is burdened with a GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) and other complex emissions systems. Seems they're causing issues when fitted to the Karoq.

Is that typical?

As others have said, its road performance is very good.

Everybody wants to think they have a need for more power, but these engines are genuinely more than adequate for UK road conditions.

I quite like the non-showiness of my own car too.

These 1.4 TSI going in new Hybrids will have a GPF, and are the latest Emissions / engine management to go with the Hybrid and DSG so are not as the Golf GTE was pre WLTP.

Before they had to withdraw them because really the Euro 6 test results were a bit iffy.

So only time will tell.

VW/SEAT still sell New 1.4 TSI 150ps's in the Sharan / Alhambra.

I’m continually impressed with my good lady’s 1.4 Octy.

It has all the nice extras that make day to day life comfortable.

It’s quiet. It’s smooth. It’s very spacious. It’s nippy - if it wasn’t auto, I’d be able to say when the Rev limiter cuts in.

So much so, that I’m seriously considering buying it at the end of the 3 year lease in October, as I can’t see another value for money new car right now. The current one is mint with lowish miles so I keep asking myself “Why change?”

If I buy it and run it another 2 or 3 years, the residual value will be mine. The annualised cost will be less than New, New, New every few years.

The new Scala looks well over priced for a similarly specced car. As do most other similar sized cars.

The Force is strong in this one.

I have been extolling the virtues of the 1.4tsi in this forum over my 5 years of ownership.

Mine is the earlier version offering 'only' 140hp (103kw) but is has the same 250Nm of torque from low revs and allied with the circa 1300kg weight of the Octavia it offers more than enough performance for use on public roads and overtaking ability.

A recent fully loaded up.motoring holiday around mountainous Tasmania included many dirt roads and performance was more than adequate. In fact the issue was more often lack of traction in first and second gears if there was slight dirt or dampness and that occasionally caught out both me and my wife out when we drove. No doubt the weight in the back was the main lack-of-traction factor.

While the performance is similar to that on offer from a 2.5L NA engine the economy is a whole better.

I miss my 1.4 SE Sport Manual which was replaced with the 1.0 SE Tech with DSG combined with a RaceChip to bring it back up to 150.

Not sure if it's the DSG, or the 1.0+RaceChip, but it's nothing compared to the 1.4 I had.

I've discovered that the grand sounding "A3 35TFSI" is a 150bhp TSI. My, more discrete, car SE-L says "Octavia" on the back.

I'm very impressed with myv 2016 1.4Tsi Combi SE manual. Over 50mpg on a decent round trip and pulls strongly from 2000 rpm or so. Much more flexible torque/power delivery than the 4x4 diesel Karoq manual I had on loan. Never struggles on hills or in an overtake.

Steering is a bit rubbery at times on all seasons tyres, but ride and noise levels are just fine to me. Only persistent issue, now sorted with a new battery, was the STOP/START system and low 12V Battery warning.

Just hope the longer term durability is OK. Staying with main dealer servicing to keep 'goodwill', if its needed.

A great car, disappointed that the new 1.5Tsi is getting some stick.

Liked my old (140) 1.4tsi, breathed on it a bit to get just over 200bhp & still avg. mpg 30 over 40k mile lifetime which for the way I drive is pretty impressive.

Don't miss the rear torture suspension setup though.

What did you do to the engine?

I find that the car handles and rides best when driven hard, which is a bit odd for an un-pretentious, non-sporting family estate car.

I have owned my older 140bhp version (MK7 Golf) for 4 & half years now......

It is well known that the 140/150 was just a remap for fueling (besides the ACT versions)…..basically a very slight ECU tinker for certain fuel grades as the 140 version was putting out way more on high grade fuel with no problems...

Mine has 167bhp & 267NM at least (no remap)...read using a ECU special box of tricks used on the road...so more real than a rolling road.....but I use Shell vpower all the time...& have modified the air intake to the GTE spec of a total cold air only intake...plus I have a washable high flow VWracing (made by ITG) drop in panel foam filter...

Just remember the 1.8T in the KM4 Golf/MK1 Octavia & MK1 Audi TT....had..148bhp & 220NM..in lowest form...

Seat Leon Cupra R & Audi S3 had an early low 207bhp  & 270NM version.....

So you are claiming 167nph & 267NM with just a cold air intake and VPower fuel?

My car feels quicker than I'd expected, although it does run out of puff a little at high rpm.

yep...……..& people (mk7 Golf) who have had before & after dyno runs for their remaps on the same engine have been hitting 155 to 160bhp ish on just vpower….

I went from the 1.4 150, to the 1.0 115 and with the RaceChip, it's taken it back up to 150 but 260NM.

Would have been interesting to see what the 1.4 150 would be like with a racechip on ;)

260NM from a 3 cylinder 1.0tsi.  Is that just you torque-ing :giggle: ….or was it measured on a dynamometer?

200nm stock + 60 with the chip. Annoyingly, when I bought it, it was advertised as +35 HP, but it's now +19 HP.

Thankfully some are still advertising it with the values I was quoted when I bought it, as I was starting to think I was going mad :D

I have this engine in ibiza and it's great, had a turbo back exhaust and found the act system produced an irrating sonic boom when it cut from 2 to 4 cylinders so had it mapped out.

Ibiza is about 1100 kgs so it's super zippy or should I say super brisky here!

My 16 plate has just completed 75K taxi miles , the only thing required is a slight adjustment of the gear linkage it sometime is hard to get into 1st and reverse, will get it done at the next service, theres a how to on tube

On a recent trip from Manchester to Newcastle, mostly at ~75mph on cruise, my car managed an indicated 52mpg.

That is better than my Mk3 Mondeo TDCI130 could do 10 years ago.
