Dashboard vibration being looked at out of warranty.

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have a 2016 190 sel exec. The car is now out of warranty. However the dashboard vibration/ rattle was first reported to the dealership in March last year whilst the car was under warranty. It’s been in 4 or 5 times for them to look at it.

The dealership has has agreed to look into this once again at their own expense. At this stage it’s investigation only.

Has anyone had this noise permanently fixed via a visit to a dealer or anything else. At this stage I’m open to all suggestions.

The noise occurs at around the 2k Rev range mainly in gears 2 3 and 4. The noise generally presents its self if the car is accelerating along a flat or up hill slope. It is not so common on a downhill slope. It most commonly happens in the morning when the car is cold.

To me it it sounds like plastic. I’m wondering if it’s something to do with the flaps of the air con system.

The guys at my dealership have replaced the n75 valve and bracket under the bonnet on the bulkhead and relocated and fixed as many air con pipes as they can. But my thoughts as they have been from the start is that it’s in the dashboard.

Each time I get the car back they tell me it’s sorted. And each time I drive it home it seems fine. But the next morning or a couple of mornings later it’s back.

Ive told the dealership I don’t want the car back until they are sure they know what it is. But I have two issues I guess. Firstly if the noise doesn’t present they won’t be able to find anything. And 2ndly the car is out of warranty and they have made it clear this is now good will so I guess they can pretty much stop investigating when they want.

Ive argued that they knew about it before the warranty ended, they are sticking to their guns that each time it leaves its mended because they can’t hear the noise anymore.

Has as anyone any advice at all. Either about what it could be or how I can continue to press the dealer. Should I get Skoda UK involved?

Thanks

adrian.

I had a vibration in the dash above the centre air vents which would manifest at approx 2k rpm, I believe it's the centre speaker. When the dealer looked at it they felt someone had already added in some insulation as a fix. Not sure what they did this time but it's mostly gone, sometimes on hard acceleration I think it's still there but not enough to bother me for now.

I’ve had those 2 grills off on top of the dash and I don’t have a speaker there. I take it you only get the speakers if you have the upgraded stereo. I couldn’t see anything obvious. I did put some felt around the sensor that sits in one of those plastic vents as there was a little bit of play when the sensor was seated but it hasn’t stopped the vibration. Listening to it it maybe under the dashboard near the instrument cluster. I know it don’t stop the car functioning but it’s so annoying.

When the vibration occurs have you pressed down hard on the speaker and vent cover on top of the dash?  (Push down and towards the windscreen).

I have a vibration around this area and it's definitely the speaker/vent covers.  I've padded them out with absorber foam and felt but when it get's really hot there must be enough expansion to cause the surfaces to just come into contact.  I'm going to remove them soon and really go to town with the 'padding'.  Like you say, it's not affecting functionality but it's annoying as hell!

Yes, there'll only be an actual speaker under the cover if you have the Canton system.

I’ve used the car for about a week with those panels removed so it defiantly isn’t them. I thought it was. But I took them out of the car.  It only does it when cold so obviously every warms up and expands the noise generally goes away. Not every time but it’s certainly less pronounced. I’ve attached a clip of the noise just so you can hear it.

I had same noise which was driving me nuts... After removing multiple times the centre vents and checking what the hell is causing noise, i figured it could be where dashboard meets with tubes for left side of ventilation system. Basically there is small spot where they touch together. After adding some TESA tape noise was ALMOST gone. After adding anti-vibration material (Silent coat thing) and adding on top TESA tape its completely gone. Now I have another noise coming from right side of dash, not sure where yet. But for me that centre noise at vibration was that. It was mostly happening only when car had to heat up though, not in summer.

That’s really interesting thank you I’ll suggest it when the car goes back and if I need to I can try taking it apart. How does it come out. The centre vent? Am I right in saying you have to put some sort of tool into the vent and hook it at the rear and then pull?

There is a special tool, I suggest to use it because I used normal plastic pry tools but it still slightly damaged chrome around vents. The vents are in pretty good. Also if you attempt to unplug the air bag light for passenger airbag it will require odb to clean error codes from computer. So you can either disconnect battery while doing that or get ODB tool to clear errors after. Its not that easy job, but for me it fixed the issue.

Hey all

My dealer solved mine in 15mins (DM Keith Huddersfield) after other garages has failed to diagnose.

They removed the cover down by the passenger side centre console and glove box and traced the air pipes back and found the clips had come away

They put new clips in and secured all the pipes back as normal and the rattle and vibrations have never come back after over a year

Not saying this is the same but sounds pretty much what I was experiencing

Hope that helps

The noise sounds like it’s coming from the top of the dash. I believe they moved the heater pipes on the very first visit. Does anyone know if it’s possible to take the top of the dashboard off?

Car is going back on the 11th for them to have yet another look. If they don’t sort it this time I guess I’ll ring Skoda see what they have to say. Im guessing it most likely won’t be much.

I've given you the solution above....

Any update on the outcome?

Yes. The noise was sorted. It was some sort of brace that had failed within the dashboard.

The garage took it back in to look and they stripped the top of the dash off and that is what they found. It's been fine ever since thankfully and they didn't charge me anything which was very good of them.

Can you specify what exactly was the cause? Mine has same issue!

Hmm. No reply!

@the_worrier  maybe @Itsrelfy does not get notifications even if you use their name, and they have not signed in since the 5th.

I have seen it. I'd need to try and dig out the paperwork they gave me as it was a long time ago.

I'll look tonight see what I can find.

Any joy? I am about to book mine in under warranty.

Unfortunately not. I've got loads of documents but not that one typically.

I'll keep searching.

I remember they had to remove the top of the dashboard and all the vents, and I was definatley told a brace was replaced. But what it was I can't recall.

I thought I put it in a post on here but I can't find it now.

All I'd say is keep pressing them because I did and mine was actually fixed by skoda outside of warranty. So I got lucky.

It was the evaporator pipes they replaced, but I think they replaced what holds them in place too.
