expansion nozzle/ charcoal filter

Featured Replies

on my furby 2005 vrs i regulary use the expansion tap located in the fuel flap / fuel filler neck, i have been doing this for 6 months +, using this you can get a extra 10 litres of fuel in your tank (55 litres) but does this cause any damage to the fuel system at all. from hearing comments i hear that it could cause damage to the charcoal filter? is this accurate? i need to know obviously in case i am doing harm, but whats the point of having that fuel expansion tap ??? is there anyone else who does the same or anybody caused damage to there car by kept using the expansion tap? what do dealers say? i have email skoda tech and will let you guys know the outcome.

i've used it twice in 18 months and it's been fine.

but whats the point of having that fuel expansion tap ???

To allow the fuel to expand and not pi$$ out all over the road of course!! I don't think you'll need to wait for the email back from them to realise that they won't endorse it's use for that purpose.

It may not do any significant damage but it's there for a reason for it being there and that's not to regularly fill with fuel. I would suggest it may be worth doing if you knew you needed the extra space but just to avoid more regular fill ups is quite frankly silly.

correct me if i'm wrong but does a diesel actually have a charcoal cannister ? i thought this was only fitted to petrol vehicles because of the vapour / emission concerns with petrol , i almost always fill the filler neck up with fuel without any noticable problems for 21 months of ownership

Hi I have been doing this for the last 12 months ..... so I could

get accurate mpg readings .. the electronic fuel monitor is not

very accurate IMO ... people claiming 50mpg + would probably

have a nasty shock .... :( unless they have done a 50mph journey

on the motorway...... only today I put the mpg monitor on and drove

the car at a steady 30mph over a mile and the readings were all over

the place ranging from 12mpg to 84mpg all on a steady throttle. I would

have expected a small deviation but thats stupid

Expect large variations in instant MPG.

Go downhill & it uses virtually no fuel, go uphill and it uses loads.

Depending on the gear you're in this can be a rather large difference.

You'll find the same in a petrol too, btw ;)

Hi

Exactly how do you get the extra fuel in? I have pressed the little silver button and heard air escaping, but no more fuel seems to go in afterwards. An idiots guide required.

Chris

At least 5 liters more. I only do it when I know I'll be using the extra fuel before I get home, like for example on my way to work :)

Hi WW

Not how much more fuel, just how do you get it in there?

Chris

k soz :D

When it 'clicks off' you nudge the little button. Some fuel will go in again. Repeat a few times. The first couple of times there isn't much going in, then it will start 'to go'.

It's really time to stop filling it up when you can hardly hear any air coming out any longer, as that means it's brimmed up.

Hope that helps

Expansion tank = where diesel gases go to as it expands in the tank therefore filling it and doing about 2 minutes driving won't be good at all. If your going to burn it all off on the way home then it's worthwhile ;)

The above is what I have gathered from a past thread IIRC.

Absolutely - you really need to drive out a fair few liters before it's safe (IMHO of course). The kinda distance I need to drive back tends to use up more than the 'expansion tank's worth' so it's kinda handy for that. Definitely don't bother if it's a short trip, I'd expect spillage otherwise :)
