What type of disc brakes. Vented or not.

Featured Replies

My 2014 Superb diesel automatic 2 ltr 4x4 passed its MOT yesterday with about 17900 miles on the clock.

The Dealer advised that my front brake discs were seriously scored. To replace them they were asking £306. I said I would get back to them.

When I phoned Kwik Fit they said they needed to see the car to decide if the discs were the vented type or not, because this would be reflected in the price.

Can anyone please tell me what type of disc brakes I have on the front of my car.

Advice on where to have this work done in Co. Durham would be appreciated.

You've written front discs; any chance you meant rear?

Fronts are always vented I think.

Just because a dealer says something needs doing doesn't make it true.

Typically on all modern cars fronts are vented rear solid.

Yes definitely front discs. He mentioned scored discs on MOT paperwork.

Thanks for that info StuH78

I'm presuming the dealer is quoting for changing the discs and pads?

Yes discs and pads. Just paid £499 for new cam belt and waterpump so just couldn't afford another £300 just yet.

It is just an advisory on scored discs.  The Car passed the MOT.

Do not have a Dealership or a Tyre & Exhaust centre do the job.

You have time to have an actual Motor Mechanic check the brakes and quote you to do the job including a Brake Fluid change.

A VW Independent or reliable garage.

I don't think what they've quoted is too bad.  I do my own brakes but I'd still expect to pay at least £150 for decent disc and pads.

Find yourself a reputable, local independent specialist and ask their advice on parts and I'd be fairly confident in a price that's 20-50% cheaper than the dealers.

It might be a little too far for you to travel but these guys are great.  They look after our Mk4 Golf and I couldn't be happier with their service.

Free Brake checks.

Amazing how many MOT tests might show Scored Brake Discs, yet Skoda Approved Used cars are sold with Scored or pitted brake discs that the 'pre sales checks' do not have the Dealership technicians replace the discs and pads.

Brake servicing is sensible. but not part of Main Dealership services, or Service plans.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Will look to find a recommended local mechanic.

Do you really need new discs and pads after ~18k or was that supposed to be 179,000 miles?

Cheers,

Only 17900 miles. Discs scored.

To "BobH38" - Front disks are ventilated for sure. What is your style of driving? Are you a Racer? It is not normal to change front disk on this kilometers. Very strange..

They are scored. Which would indicate something has got in between the pad and the disc. Wouldn’t be anything to do with style of driving.

For the 2.0 TDI front disks are usually 312x25 mm and all fronts are ventilated across the range. See if the quote from the dealer includes the PR code for the brakes and do a search for that. It'll confirm what you need.

No I am not a boy racer. Steady away is the way I drive. Very little on motorway..Once a year I tow my small touring caravan.

From the comments here I shall go to a small independent garage and ask for a brake examination.

There were winter days where roads were gritted in the past months and in some areas Grit is not just Salt & Sand it can be mixed 'grit', so scoring is not unusual as the boy from the valleys sang.

Seems to be getting more unusual the older I get

Dealers and quick fit type outfits always pick on brakes, it's an easy way to make a lot of money and make people feel bad if they dont sort it.

Also I think brakes suffer from not being used "seriously" now and again, particularly these sliding caliper types
