All Season Tyres On A Scout

Featured Replies

As per the title, looking for feedback and recommends from anyone who has fitted 17" All Season tyres on a Scout, particularly from owners that have used them in the snow and ice.

I normally fit 16" Cold Weather tyres on steel wheels and 17" Summer tyres on the Proteus alloys, but have been advised during last service to replace my Nokian WR A3 Cold Weather Tyres due to cracking around the tread.  Same advice given about two of my Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance tyres for the same reason during the MoT.  Both sets of tyres are around 5 years old, and have done around 25-30k, so cannot really complain.

To replace both sets with like for like, I'm probably looking at £750, which got me wondering about using an All Season tyre (Goodyear Vector 4 Season G2 or Continental All Season Contact)  which I can probably get for around £500 fitted and would save me having to swap over twice a year.

Many thanks, Fin.

Not sure what size you have, all seasons sound sensible (unless you are the sort of person driving up to ski resorts regularly in which case go for full winter tyres)

Goodyear Vector 4 season Gen 2 or Continental all season contact seem best choice for Scotland (but I would suggest more summer biased if you lived in Southern England)

Maybe Nokian weatherproof If above not available

If you need a unusual size then Vredestein Quatrac 5 or new Quatrac Pro seem to cover wide range of sizes

I used Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons on my standard front wheel drive Octavia during the bad winters of 2010-11 and 2011-12. They were good enough in the snow to convince me I don't ever need four wheel drive, so I imagine on a Scout they would be unstoppable!

They were hard to fault in hot weather too, perhaps very slightly noisy on hot tarmac but that was the only issue. Got about 30k from a set I think.

Thanks for both of your replies.

The Goodyear and Continental are the ones that are getting the most recommends.

I'm a big fan of Nokian having used their winter tyres for the last 9 years or so, but reviews of the Weatherproof tend to imply its warm/dry weather performance can be quite poor, or is at least not as good as the Goodyear or Continental. Also I read a thread in the Tyre and Wheel section where a number of people reported cracking in the tyre walls after a short period of use.

Nokian weatherproofs are indistinguishable from full winters in snow (as far as I can tell). Their warm weather performance is accordingly compromised, but not enough for me to change them and they are still a million times better than Chinese summer tyres. It is a Skoda estate after all, not a sports car.

Many thanks for your response.

Are your All Season Nokian 17"? Reason I ask is during the really bad snow of 6 December 2010 (it was that bad I can still remember the date!) my Scout was fitted with the OEM 17" Dunlop SP01's and the wheel arches clogged with compacted snow.

I never experienced the wheel arches clogging with snow when I swapped over to16" Nokian Cold Weather tyres.

Therefore, from personal experience I can't tell if the reason the wheel arches clogged was due to the tyres being 'summer' tyres, or due to them being 17" and there being insufficient clearance for the snow to be dispersed.

Many thanks,

Fin

There should be very little change in outer diameter as larger alloys use tyres with shorter sidewalls 🙂

It's more likely to be the tread pattern or snow conditions that clogged the arches.

Thanks all.

Looks like 17" Goodyear or Continental All Season tyres it is then.

I've discounted the Nokian due to their snow and ice bias.  I'm more likely to drive in fairly warm weather (it's 25.3C at the moment) than  in snow or icy conditions.  There were occasions during recent cold snaps that even with the Nokian WR A3 cold weather tyres fitted I decided not to risk it - until more and more people around here start using All Season or CWT's you are always going to be at risk of being taken out by another driver who has lost traction in the ice and snow.

Once again, thanks to all who responded.

Fin

I can thoroughly recommend the GY Vector 4 Season Gen 2's.  We have them fitted to our Golf GTI mk4 and they've preformed faultlessly.  As a Summer/dry tyre they are better than the Conti Sport Contact 5's which they replaced and they never struggle in the wet and have been faultless in the couple of drives they've had to do in both fresh/dry snow and the slushy/slippy stuff.  I'm really happy with them.

We got them over Michelin CC's as they are more of a Winter-biased all-season tyre which is perfect for the type of weather we get and the 3PMSF marking helps as the car is used as a dog taxi and often used on rural b roads 365 days a year.

I often take the dog out at 0500 and then quite late at night,  in Winter so plenty of cold temps and ice on untreated roads; no issues whatsoever.

Another vote for the Vector 4Seasons...

After my experience with Nokian, I won't be going back...

That's worse than the cracking on my six year old and 30k - ish Nokian WR A3's, which I've been 'advised' to replace ASAP, hence why I started this thread.

I'm ordering the Vector All Season Gen2 in the next few days as I've noticed the price creep up a couple of quid since last week.

I’ve been really impressed with the Goodyear 4 seasons on the Scout (also on an SLK230 and Auris hybrid).

Ive just replaced the gen 1s on the Scout with gen 2s first impressions are very good. I used kwik fits mobile service £400 all in - much cheaper than mail order and having them fitted at local garage. Has to go up to the 98 load rating though.

hope this is of help.

If you happen to be a Costco member, go and look there as their prices seem to be really competitive at the moment.

Thanks for the Heads Up with the Kwik Fit price.  That is £88-120 cheaper than any other fitted price I've found.

Does this make any discernible difference to the vehicle; ride or handling?

If not, I'm just going to pull the trigger and get them fitted this week.

Hi Fin, no major difference at all with the higher load rating. The ride and handling are excellent. You won’t be disappointed, especially at the kwik fit price😃

Mark.

Pulled the trigger,  and getting them fitted Thursday.

Many thanks for all of your help.

@mark999 just out of curiosity, what pressures do you run the All Seasons?

Hi, the Gen 2s seem to like a bit higher pressures.

Light load 33 Front 35 rear.

full load.   34  Front 40 rear

hope this helps

Mark

More than!

I have them at 2.4bar (35psi).

I noticed an immediate improvement as they feel more planted than the Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance they replaced.

More than happy with my purchase, and I think I'm all out of questions!
