A different type of tyre question - change from 225/35/r19 to 235/35/r19 - any ride/handling benefits

Featured Replies

I need to change two front tyres so want to wear out the mid range 225 on the rear by moving them to the front.

My question is could I run with 235 on the rear until the fronts wear out and would there be any handling issues??

Secondly would the ride improve moving to 235??

thanks

You are more likely to feel the change of tyre manufacturer and going from worn to new tyres than 10mm in width and the associated wall height increase.

You just need to keep in mind you are deviating from the manufacturers approved tyre size and your insurance company may treat it as a modification.

Thanks for the reply.

Some tyre website bring up the 235 as default which is odd.

Seems to be little gains from changing size except cost unless anyone can advise?

Thanks.

Then they are wrong, Skoda use 225. To check look up your model (don't know what you have) in the 'wheels tyres' section to see what is approved for your car

Yes cost. 235 is a common VW size, more plentiful and therefore cheaper. Still not the correct size for the car though

My 2c, after switching from P-Zero to PS4S in the same size (225) --> Mich is noticeably wider, probably as wide as 235 would have been Pirellis.

There is also a difference in the manufacturer table of recommended rim width for particular dimension. For 225 in Mich the minimum rim width is 7,5", 235 is actually not recommended size for Škoda's factory rim. You can check for yourself on the Mich official site, in the section with PS4S, there is a PDF.  After I've seen the tires on the rim, it is frankly clear why is that.

Mich also has a little smaller circumference. At high speeds, P-Zero was almost matching GPS, -1km/h difference, while Mich has around -4km/h.

235/35x19 tyres offer more Rim protection on the extrem Wheels.

Yes people expect tyre to be the same size but they are not.

My old Passat had 235/45's. I swapped from Conti Sports to Goodyear F1's. The Goodyear's were noticeable wider and lower profile. On the Conti's the speedo at 70mph was 1mph out and with the F1's 5mph out. My Sottozero winters were 3mph out.

You may well void your insurance fitting incorrect size tyres. So make sure you run it past your insurance company. Or just get the correct 225 tyres.
