Buying A Tow Bar Advice

Featured Replies

hi guys i need to buy a tow-bar for my box trailer on a 2007 Scout Estate 2.0 140hp  TDi

would rather buy a cheaper aftermarket one with the correct wiring.

I have a friend who can fit it if I can find the parts needed can any one help please?

cant seem to find a complete tow-bar kit with wiring anywhere

has anyone ever bought one for my car (above) that could share a link too a kit please?

We have the estate version of your car (MY07 2.0tdi estate 4x4 BMM with rough road pack) and I bought one of these from fleabay for just over £100. Shipping from Europe was included and was problem free.

You can buy the above with a 7-way electrics kit but I opted for a separate 13-way kit from here.  That seller has now sold out but I'm sure a little searching would turn up another.

its the 7 way kit I needed for my box trailer any chance you could point me to the correct one please?

is that the full wiring kit so the reversing sensers dont go off I most likely would have to get someone to do the lecky bits as that is not my strong point, are the holes pre-drilled for the tow bar?

thanks for your help that link was just what I needed mines a 4x4 as well

I may have a spare 7-way kit that I won't be using as I've gone for the 13-way setup.  I'll see if I can dig it out and see what the instructions say.

BTW this fleaybayer is breaking a 4x4 O2  down your way and it looks like it had a towbar fitted ...

thanks mate but think i would rather buy new just not sure which wiring kit to buy as there seems to be full kits and half kits any chance of pointing me out the correct one please?

did you fit your own did you?

I fitted my own to our 1.9pd O2 estate but I haven't fitted our 4x4 estate towbar yet; the mechanical fixing job is much the same.   My 4x4's parking sensors don't work at present but I'm planning to fix them at some point so I'll have to think about that aspect then ...

My electrics kits all came from Towing Electrics - www.towingelectrics.com - in Rochdale.  Their website isn't very helpful but you could try [email protected] or 01706 638 065 for more information.

If you're planning on having an auto-leccy fit the electrics maybe it would be better to ask them which electrics kit to buy as they'll be familiar with that one.

If you scroll through the fittings it doesn't mention a 2007 estate - only the hatchback, and I'm not sure if they're the same.

The supplier I got mine from listed a 7-pin wiring kit with the towbar; are they not listing them any more?

yea it does say its the correct one

also says

- Towbar incl. screws, bolts, plates
- Electrics 7pin (incl. recommended by-pass relya, L.E.D. ready)
- Swan Neck Towball ISO 50mm
- Fitting instruction
- Towball Cover
- Warranty (3 years)

OK, looks like it's OK but whilst the 3-year warranty is nice you would have to send it back to Germany (or wherever) if it went wrong 😞

Try this fleabay search "towbar Skoda Octavia 2007 1Z5 2.0 TDI 4x4" for a selection of towbars and wiring options.

Also worth having a read of the caveats for this 7-pin wiring kit; it will help you know what to look out for.

I would go for the second hand one assuming the price is right.

Very unlikely that you will need to use the warranty on a new one electrics aside.

Nice though the swan neck ones are what do you people do if you need to change the towball height or tow something with a ball & pin coupling?

My setup looks a mess with a multi-hole drop plate, bumper protector ball & pin coupling and twin towing sockets but I can tow all my varied trailers and it gives the painted plastic bumper protection against other people parking.

I wasn't offering it up for sale, simply mentioning that it was a spare as I had purchased 13-pin kits.  It won't get wasted - I'll use it elsewhere at some point.

Given your uncertainty about the electrics I strongly suggest you consult the leccy you recruit to do the fitting.  They will know what works and what doesn't and it gives you a single point of reference should you have any queries in the future.

I think your right I was never one for the leccy side of things unless it was small jobs or plug and play

turns out that one in the ebay link I showed you is not the right one for my car I sent them a message via fleabay messaging and they say no.

never thought this was going to be such a carry on lol.

I rang one company who said the estate with sensers can only have a detachable tow bar is this correct, i,m taking you would know @StickyMicky as you have the same car? which ones can be used the flange or the swan am confused now not ever having had one fitted and I dont wanna lose my parking sencers having just got used to them

Unless you are towing all the time is it really that much of an inconvenience to have the parking sensors beeping when you are reversing?

Most are programmed to beep once on selecting reverse gear and mine mute after a while, not sure if they did before I fitted the new head unit which for some reason has stopped them playing around like they always used to.

I must have towed since I bought this car nearly a year ago but cant recall the sensors screaming when I reversed, I only have the cheap standard 7 pin set up plus an auxiliary caravan socket, all connected using one of those piggyback canbus modules that are in the listings you have shown.

I will plug in my tester later and select reverse to see.

yea this guy said I got to have the more expensive detachable tow bar or the tow bar its self will set it off rendering the parking sensors not usable

The only reason swan necks are recommended is that, some of the flange type will interfere with the parking sensors, I just had a towbar fitted to my mk 3, I had a flange type fitted because I sometimes use a clip on bike rack, and didn't want to spend on another one.

It may be that a flange type will be OK  with the parking sensor, someone I know had a flange type bar put on ,they say the sensors work OK, mine still work but I get interference, but then the pick up for the clip on rack increases the thickness by an inch.

I take the view I have managed to drive for 40 years without parking sensors without problems, and probably will for next 20 or so years , I just switch off the audible warning and trust to old school driving skills.

I disagree ,you do not need the detachable  Swan neck, the ordinary Swan neck will do, besides are you going to muck about fitting and removing your tow hitch every time you tow?

That's unlikely.

If you have the OEM trailer detector unit, it is connected via the CANbus and so is the rear parking aid, so it will automatically stop the beeper from going off when you have a connector plugged into the 7/13 pin connector, it also disables the rear fog lights.

The actual towbar is behind the bumper cover and even if you have a fixed neck it is between the two middle sensors and close to the bumper cover the sensors will not detect it, I have a removable swan neck on my MK1 and that doesn't affect the sensors when I leave the swan neck in place

He is talking b******s, I have no end of crap hanging off my towbar flange and its well outside of the sensor detection angle.

If you want to prove it then put the car in reverse with the ignition on and go and wave your hand around.

thats true never thought of that lol.

Thing is I cant seem to find one with the leccy bits for sale on ebay I thought I had with the link I put on here at the beginning but messaged them and they say no it wont fit

Have you looked at PF Jones ....

Thats where I got mine from.  Put in car details and it shows what will fit.  I opted for a Westfalia detachable Swan neck with dedicated electrics.

With bar in situ (but no trailer attached), put it in reverse and sensors work perfectly.
