Noise turning left slow. Vrs TDI 2015

Featured Replies

So I got a 2.0 TDI vrs Octavia and it's making a grinding type noise turning left. Sound like it's coming from NSF. No noise straight forward. Nothing turning right. Checked the suspension, wheel bearing, tyres. No play at all. Any ideas appreciated.

Has the noise suddenly happened, is the noise there at low speed, does anyone else drive the car. What mileage has it covered.

Don't want to doubt your checks but have they been done thoroughly. Get someone else to listen on a test drive.

There’s another post on here about this - lower left engine mount if you search.

Known mqb fault when turning left only.

Hope that helps. Let us us all know if it is that.

Mine started doing this after DSG box repairs.

I've also read it's usually an engine mount issue.

It's probably not an engine mount, but one of the gearbox mounts.  These are known to be weak and are also very sensitive to being properly aligned. (So that you get this noise shortly after gearbox service makes sense).

The gearbox in the Octavia (and Audi A3, VW Passat) is very, very close to the chassis, so if the mount is weak or not aligned properly, the gearbox will touch chassis when turning left under load, causing grinding and resonating noises.

I have a 1.6 TDI 6sp manual that had the same issue.  Had the gearbox mount (the one below the battery) replaced last week.   Noise gone..

40k miles. Tyres rotated. Wheel bearing fitted.

Heard by two Skoda master techs at different garages. One says it's fine one wants to fit a driveshaft. Currently being told it's a "operating condition" or vrs TDI Octavia's by the garage I bought the car from in April.

So the dealer i bought the car from is claiming this is a operating condition and will not repair. Another dealer suggests it is a driveshaft and they won't take on the repair as the first dealer has replaced the wheel bearing and tyres.

🤔

Just to add to the confusion, I have recently had the same issue develop.  As it happened, the car was due at the the dealers on Wednesday for something else so I asked them to check it out.  (Ever the pessimist, I was fearing the wheel bearing had gone again - after being replaced two years ago).  They tell me its simply the inner wing moulding that is split and is catching on the tyre at full lock.  If that's all it is I'm quite relieved.  It's on back-order at the moment so I'm hoping that when eventually fitted, all will be well.

Mine does it as soon as any left is applied at the steering wheel. So I think the gearbox mount sounds logical. Thanks for all the replies. I'll keep you posted on progress. Also noticed a bit of vibration coming back up the gear knob while coasting in gear. Slight rattle after a gear change (guessing that would move the engine/box).

Well, as you say it happens with the slightest steering to the left, i’m even more sure it’s the gearbox mount. You can try driving in reverse and steering to the RIGHT. If the noise is there too, i’m 99% it’s the gearbox mount. Good luck!

That makes me think it’s not aligned correctly.

Yes and I was also getting the noise under braking.

I never got it sorted as I traded it in, by this stage I'd lost all confidence in the car.

In 14 months and 10k miles.

Wheel bearing failure x2

Heater Matrix Failure and all coolant in cabin

No Aircon.

DSG Gear lever failure x2

Clutch pack failure x2

DSG Mechatronic failure

Columbus screen intermittently unresponsive in cold weather.

Whine from dashboard above idle.

Noise under braking and turning left.

Not to mention the poor noise insulation at speed and the suspension noise from the torsion beam.

Sold with 32k miles on and 6 months left on warranty.

So I suggested it was the gearbox mount. They said "we've diagnosed it as the driveshaft but we'll check it while we are in there"

Car over heated and water pump failed on the way! 🙈

Car returned new driveshaft, timing belt and water pump.

Noise still there.

"Can you bring it back and demo the noise"

😐

Wow you were very unlucky by the sounds of things. What did you trade it in against.

After 12 years of VAG products I bought a Jag XF Portfolio.  6 months and 8k miles on not had any issues and not a squeak or rattle at 5 years old and 45k miles.
