Dsg mechatronic issue

I have a Edition 2l 4x4. Registered March 2018. Only done 13,000 miles. Last weekend error message came up - "error gearbox you can drive on". Took it to the dealers and have been advised it needs a new metatronics unit. Currently in a courtesy car until it can be fixed next week. My first automatic in 40 years of driving. Is this a common fault with Dsg boxes and is there anything I need to ensure the dealer does as part of the fix?

Welcome.

Is your DSG a 7 speed wet clutch or a 6 speed?

Not common on Wet Clutch DSG's from pre 2018 that are serviced to manufacturers recommendations, (guidelines / schedules.)

As to nearly new like yours from 2018 then hopefully not going to become common.

So people might take note of yours after just a year or less, and keep an eye on reported failures in year 2 or 3 and see if it becomes common on these.

Be sure all is in writing from the Dealer & the Warranty Provider.

PS.

Can i ask please where in the country you are or what Dealership you are dealing with?

I would not accept that the replacement Mechatronic Control Unit warranty will expire in March 2021 when the Manufacturers Warranty Expires.

I would be wanting Skoda to provide an Extended Warranty.

As a 'Trust Building Measure'.

If there is no inherent issues then no problem to them, a VW / Skoda backed extended warranty that should never need claimed on.

Hmmm an odd coincidence, my friend has bought a Seat Ateca 4x4 2L from dealer 2nd registered owner and his gear box just failed 2yrs old. 2 days ago he is in an Audi while dealer tries to identify fault.

I will try and find out more from him.

I am beginning to regret not taking factory warranty out on mine....

  • john999boy changed the title to Dsg mechatronic issue

Thanks for the responses. It's a 7 speed but no idea if wet or dry system. The dealer is RRG Rochdale - didn't buy the car from them. Will see what I can negotiate around the extended warranty. Will let you know the outcome

@Andy0528

You have a 7 speed wet clutch then with a 2 litre and AWD.   So need Oil changes for the DSG every 40,000 miles.

?

How long are you keeping the car and do you own it or lease it?

The thing is.

The 7 speed wet clutch DSG have yet to prove how reliable they are because you never know how good something is after 2 years or 3 years until they have been on sale to the public and on the roads and not just in the hands of Factory Employees and Journalists who can be Deaf, Dumb & Blind to matter that are important to people that spend their own money on vehicles.

There have been some reported issues over the past 18-24 months with some 7 speed wet DSG's.

People will say that only those complaining come to forums and social media.

Thousands with no issues.

Truth is that owners / drivers might only hear of issues because of Forums / Social Media because Manufacturers or Dealership Staff might say, 'Never heard of that before'.

Please keep us up to date on how things go.  All smoothly i hope and Rod McLeod if still with Skoda UK can look at the issue if a growing one and extend warranties.

Surely VW, Skoda, SEAT, Audio want owners buying cars to have trust in the 'after sales' and 'honesty' of VW & VW UK.

One of the reasons I've moved to Volvo is because they use torque-converter autos but I see that for their recently released XC40 hybrid they are using a 7 speed DSG!

Funny enough, my 2.0TDi DSG 4x4 has just developed a nasty rattle after its first oil change service. (18.5K miles) Booked at the dealer who did the service next Saturday, so hoping it is just something not tightened up properly or a socket left in there at service and not something expensive. Although to my amateur ear it sounds like the clutch bearing did on my Escort when it failed....

Watching this thread with interest.

Dealer been in touch to say mechatronics unit is on back order and can't tell me when it will arrive. They will ring me tomorrow or Wednesday with an update. Does this mean lots are going wrong and they have run out of stock? Anyone able to tell me what a mechatronics unit is please?

Could be for any number of reasons. All current supply could be taken by production, there may have been a switch of supplier, there maybe a known issue and stock has been withdrawn or just simply the supplier has a production issue.

The mechatronic unit is a collection or better described a assembly of solenoids, levers and control that actuates the functions of the gearbox.

Update from friend his failure was due to "casing of gearbox cracked" new one on way from Spain...

Not sure how that can happen after 28,000 miles?

Anyway odd coincidence but a different failure...

Skoda UK finally responded. They told me the mechatronics unit has to be built by the factory based on my cars VIN number and takes 10 - 14 days. In other words the unit is car specific. I'm no expert but I'm not convinced. Anyone come across this?

Turns out I was right. My car needs a new set of clutches according to the dealer / Skoda UK and possibly a new fly-wheel. (really?) Parts are coming this week. So this appears to be not the same as the OP's issue, but certainly in the same area. I'll report back what the work sheet says when the work has been done.

The infamous unreliable clutch packs strike again. Hope you had your lucky pants on when you collected the car from its service?:blush

Whatever you do, don't ask the dealer what the price would have been if the car was just over three years old and out of warranty. You might not buy another DSG again.

Shudder,

Mind you my friend who works at Audi just fitted a new s-tronic gearbox in an R8, bill for that? £20K apparently.

Lots of early Lambo Gallardo's with problems with the auto boxes but no problems with the lovely alloy gated manuals.:o
