Superb II buying advice

Featured Replies

Any suggestions on things to look for when buying a Superb 2010 2.0tdi (170) DSG? Any specific things once at a certain mileage?

Thanks,

Check for servicing on time.

Engine can be variable, DSG - every 40k, Haldex - 40k.

Check / ask if diesel fix was applied and when - extra 2 years warranty on engine / DPF / EGR related parts.

What @jafo said regarding servicing: don't worry about Haldex though since a 2010 170 DSG is FWD only. The timing belt should have been done by now on a car that age so check for that. If you can get the VIN you can check here if it's had the EA189 update done.

Go for as long a test drive as you can so that the car has a chance to warm up. The DSG can be a little bit jerky when cold but should be butter smooth once warmed up. Check that it kicks down properly. Play with D, S and Tiptronic modes. The engine should be smooth and quiet on the move; a tiny bit of vibration at idle is normal when cold.

You can download the owner's manual here if you want to read through it before seeing the car.

Check that all of the electrical stuff works, especially if it's an Elegance spec model as it has a lot of toys.

  • Bi-xenon headlights should do a little dance on startup: down, out to the sides and back in, then back up.
  • Check that the aircon works: if it's dual zone check that it can output different temps on each side.
  • Electric seats have a lot of adjustment: again check that something moves when you press all the buttons.
  • If it has auto wipers, put the stalk in the intermittent position and check that they respond to rain on the screen: moving the switch on top of the stalk should change how quickly they wipe once activated.
  • If it has satnav, check that it can get a position fix.
  • If it has parking sensors check that they all work.

Oh boy, found two cars, both very nice but ... black leather or cream leather interior....? Tough call, I do like that Skoda have decided on black carpet with the cream leather, a very wise choice!

Ivory looks nicer, especially with blue or burgundy paint, but it'll show up the dirt more.

I have the beige leather on a Cappuccino car and it all looks very coordinated. The other plus (purely my opinion) is that you get a beige headliner, whereas the black interior gets a grey headliner which I never like on cars.

The dark carpet is a plus - works well with a black dash - its practical and it looks good (in my BMW owning days the light interior with a dark carpet cost extra and was referred to as "Highline").

I've had no issues keeping it clean but then again, dogs go behind the dog guard in the back and I don't have a litter of chocolate wielding kids to maintain! If you're looking at 2010 models, it should be pretty easy to judge how well its worn. when I was last collecting my car from its 5 year timing belt job, i had a good look at the second hand Superbs on the lot. I thought the ones with beige looked "fresher", though this could be a result of the owners cleaning it more often because of the colour! Maybe the back ones were a bit busier hiding the dirt....  😉

My Superb Elegance also has the beige leather interior - I love it!!!  The only issue I have is with the front interior door pulls - the plastic on the actual handles has turned to something resembling chewing gum!  I have patched them up using self adhesive beige vinyl - acceptable but not perfect.

Off to view one this afternoon if it doesn't sell before I finish work! Bit higher mileage than I would have liked but ticks a couple more boxes than the other two I saw, one being a black interior which will be better I think, as as well as being a motorway car for commuting (75+ a day) it will be a family car at the weekends.

Are there any concerns with the opening panoramic roofs on these older models?

@19ninety

They suffer from blocked drains and pipes coming away at join to roof causing water ingress.

Easy fix if needed they also can rattle a wee bit but again  can be fixed

Yep viewed and light water staining to the rear roof lining and water in the spare wheel well, headlining stains will come out with a little carpet cleaner I reckon.

I take it that the head lining needs to be dropped to allow checking that the hoses are all correctly fitted to the pano roof assembly? Have had to clean sunroof drains before so I know that isn't a difficult job itself.

Read this post this was worst case scenario with complete removal..

I shall try and find the post with the pdf instructions on how to fix loose drain pipe tomorrow its in another section (think its the Yeti section) but cant find the post just now.

@DEL80Y That would be appreciated, thank you. Fingers crossed it won't come to R&Ring the whole assembly, but thanks for the link it will be very handy if needed. Given the very light staining and small amount of water in the boot I'm optimistic Just cleaning drains will work... well see when I manage to get the car picked up next week.

First job clean the roof drains.

Second; is dig out the DAS-6, find the Meguiars and carnauba and get a bit of a sweat on.

Found it
Look in the pdf he has uploaded
Mines was lucky with just the drains needing securely attached.

Read page 6 where he says that you dont need to remove headling or sunroof as the Captains Tolley sealer worked by capillary action to seal the joint just as effectively as gravity..

After youve polished her I would advise a ceramic coat

Costly but the paint on the Superbs are ridiculously thin.

I taxied mine for 3 years and wish I got this done when I first got the car.

Mate paid £300 to get it done professionally but the difference between his car and mine is drastic.

You can hit it with your nail and it scratches noticeably.
Got round to correcting  3 panels this summer and ceramic coated with crystal serum ultra from gtechniq

Will have a think about gtechniq, the car will be doing 20-25k a year mostly motorway driving so the front will get trashed in no time with stone chips, regular wash & wax will likely be plenty to keep it looking smart after a damn good machine polish.

Park Assist ... is it any good at getting the car nicely parked in a gap or is it a bit of a gimmick? I didn't try it on the test drive for fear of something going wrong!

I'm not the biggest fan of ceramic coatings: they look too glassy and can hide the flake in the paint.

Only used park assist once to see if it worked, it does and it did a good job of parking the thing, for me, it's a bit of a gimmick, but I don't YET have any disabilities causing neck or back issues which could where it may be more beneficial as a driver aid.

@chimaera thanks for the EA189 link, have checked and it's been done according to the link:

"ŠKODA Partner has confirmed to us the service action (Diesel EA189) had been performed for this VIN."
