Engine swap MK1 BMD - Mk2 CBZ

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Before I start let me just say although I am seriously considering this at some point in the future I am looking for your input. Money isn’t a concern and neither is time. I would be planning to pick up a cat b so I have pretty much everything needed.

So the valves need doing on the BMD and it got me thinking other than the engine and a couple of dings in the paint work the car itself is in really good condition but when I finish uni I’m going to be covering a fair distance and I just don’t think the BMD is gonna cut it on the motorway everyday even for just the 10/11 miles it will be doing there and back.

I have done some research and it looks like the 1.2tsi with gearbox will drop straight in which you would expect as it fits a MK2. The mounts are all about the same and a little fabrication isn’t an issue.

The mechanical side of things should be pretty straight forward with points below being the biggest issues that I can foresee.

High pressure fuel pump and sender swap. - Sender/Gauge swapped and pump fitted inline with some fuel pipes needed modifying/adapting.

Charge cooler - standard tsi could be mounted if not custom piping to a vrs FMIC.

Possibly swap front hubs to VRS hubs for better brakes just to be on the safe side.

The electrical side I’m a little confused about. I was thinking the simplest thing to do would be to strip the dash out of the car and replace everything with the stuff from the tsi. From battery and fuse box to ECU and stereo. Can some one enlighten me on what issues I may face here?

This probably sounds odd to swapping one 1.2 for another 1.2 but the tsi standard pretty much doubles the Bhp and the fuel consumption will probably be better and if I wanted to go mental I could just swap the turbo for a hybrid in the future. I did debate a 1.4 tsi but I think it would cause too many issues.

Any input would be great.

Thanks

Mike

  • Biggest stumbling block I can see is on the MK2 they did away with the bulkhead connection point. So the vehicle wiring harness is one piece from the front fog light all the way back to the rear clust

  • If you're buying a written off 1.2 TSI then all you need is the space and time to make the swap work, gut the mark 1 then start moving everything over from the mark 2 until it's all done. Think of it

  • I'd be tempted personally to transplant the entire MK2 harness into the MK1. Port across the ABS system, convenience, diagnostics etc.

If you're buying a written off 1.2 TSI then all you need is the space and time to make the swap work, gut the mark 1 then start moving everything over from the mark 2 until it's all done. Think of it from the point of view that you're effectively re-shelling the mark 2 with a mark 1 shell rather than just swapping engines. Your main stumbling blocks will be electrical and wiring related.

Would the donor 1.2 TSI be from 2012 on after the earlier engines with the timing chain / tensioner issues?

Also i am assuming you are going for a 105ps one.

That’s what I thought. It’s the wiring that’s got me worried as I’m not sure how invasive the MK2 wiring is. I’d also like to keep the MK1 interior standard so I’m not sure about the clocks and steering column for the key barrel etc

@Roottootemoot Yes I’d be waiting for one 13 on and low miles. Preferably rear end damage that still runs. 105ps is the plan. There’s a yeti with the 1.2 at the minute going for £95 so I’ll just be waiting for a Fabia to come available lol

Really £95?   And you are not taking it!

No haha I’ve got no where for it. I’m currently mid way through doing our drive and I’ll be back at uni late September so this is something I’ll probs try and pick up towards the spring time and swap before the next MOT is due.

from now till then I’ll be sorting out the body work and as the rear bumper needs a respray that’s on the list. The rear doors need sealing and I’m half tempted to try and get the paint work to a show car finish so when the swaps done I won’t be ashamed to take to shows and meets lol

@mikey362

What does £95 get you a Yeti VIN Plate and a V5 / Ringers kit?

Biggest stumbling block I can see is on the MK2 they did away with the bulkhead connection point. So the vehicle wiring harness is one piece from the front fog light all the way back to the rear clusters. The MK1 separates out into various sections which makes swapping things about much easier.

@RoottootemootThe entire car its up to £225 at the minute auction ends in around an hour but it’s for the entire think but it’s pretty badly damaged.

@Tech1e So in that case would I be able to splice the Mk2 loom into the MK1? So that I haven’t got to try and re wire everything? Is it just lighting wiring or everything down to the electric windows? I mean some things just aren’t going to be there which I would assume i could remove with vcds. Obviously I’ll have to find some wiring diagrams. Or with your experience would it just be easier to replace the entire thing?

I'd be tempted personally to transplant the entire MK2 harness into the MK1. Port across the ABS system, convenience, diagnostics etc.

You could break the mark 2 loom up and introduce inline connectors to make removal and refitting easier, it's still a non-trivial task.

I'm unclear why you want to spend hundreds of hours doing this one-off custom job for such a small return in increased performance and reliability.

Obviously I wouldn’t want anything that heavily damaged but it still runs so yeah I don’t think £250 is bad lol.

@sepulchrave it’s not that different to people dropping in the 1.8t engines. It’s something different but I’d be comfortable under taking this project and it’s going to last longer than the valves on the BMD unless your suggesting I try to drop in a 2.0 TFSI haha that’s just asking for too much trouble haha

Sorry when you mentioned a price i thought you meant a price and not what bids are at.

All the auction action will be in the last few minutes so there's no way that yeti is going for arfur monkey.

I would say that the 1.8T conversion is considerably easier since there are precedents and lots of help and instruction available, what you want to do is about the same level of effort and complexity as a 2.0 TFSI conversion using a different donor vehicle.

It ended at £250 no more bids were placed. That little blue bit on the circle was the equivalent of about 3 seconds when I took that picture.

really I wouldn’t have the 2.0 would even fit in the bay! Lol

Sure it would, I drive a 2.0 Mark 1 Fabia, ok it's only an 8 valve and has no turbo, but there's room enough.

It wasn't sold because it didn't meet the reserve, you may be bright but you haven't any experience which means your confidence dramatically exceeds your ability, please don't take that the wrong way, it's valuable advice freely given.

No offence taken I asked for advice and your giving it.

Tbh I do have some experience just not with anything this big project wise or this modern car wise. Your right my ambition outways the skills I currently possess. Like I said earlier the mechanical stuff isn’t the issue it’s the wiring for the interior and the lights I need to get my head around.

I think the next thing to do is find some wiring diagrams for a MK1 and Mk2 then compare them and see what’s going on and I think that will be the deciding thing.

Slightly puzzled why you think you need to use a different fuel pump? The pump and gauge sender are one unit inside the tank.

On the schematics I’ve looked at on the CBZ there is a high pressure fuel pump in the engine bay aswell as the sender in the tank. Obviously if I’m wrong tell me lol.

4 being the fuel pump

Oh right. I didn't realise the donor car would be that new. I've been doing cars for years but I wouldn't undertake this project. Too scary for me. Haha.

  • Author

Yeah I’m going to get as new a possible if I actually do it. Definitely 13 onward though.

Guys what’s my best option for wiring diagrams?

should I just pick up a couple of Haynes manuals or is their an online repository that I can’t seem to find?

thanks again
