Karoq MY19 Driver/Passenger Seat Recline Issue

Featured Replies

I've had my Karoq for 2 months now and have done about 1700 miles in it already, due to a few trips within mainland Europe. With a baby seat behind me, I kept feeling like I had to recline the seat more upright constantly, and although it was hard to know if this was really happening, I was convinced because my child's feat didn't reach the back of my seat, then after moving forward i felt him kicking my seat 30 mins later.

After a month or so of this, I took the car to Skoda to investigate the 1st gear kangaroo ( 😞 ) and the seat recline. Turns out the dealer found that i'm not crazy, this is actually a car default happening on the driver AND passenger seats....they validated this by testing all their Karoq's in the showroom and on the forecourt. If you push the seat hard it doesn't move, but over time of sitting in it, it gradually reclines back slowly.

I'm keen to know if anyone else has felt something like this going on as well, and reported to the dealer? My dealer said it's something that no one has reported to them before, and Skoda are highly unlikely to perform a recall or fix unless a certain number of people report the problem. This basically leaves me with an annoying need to move the seat forward every 30 minutes or so!

I will watch out for this - it's an interesting observation. I have tended to assume that any adjustments that I have had to make to the seat have been necessitated by a change of drivers ......... but maybe there is a slow movement in seat recline angle.

Please let me know if you see this as well. I think my dealership is one of the more honest ones and the senior technician I spoke to was completely honest about the 1.5 tsi issues, but maybe they were trying to get out of replacing my seat!

I will check this out, though it may take a couple of months as currently I'm not doing much mileage. I certainly noticed this happening with my old Astra but assumed that it was simply a result of wear and tear.

I am glad you posted this issue with your seat, as I thought I was going mad, as my seat does this as well . Obviously I only notice it on long journeys, when I find I have to alter the seat recline forward in order to keep a comfortable driving position.

My Karoq is a months old and 7500 miles.  Leather non electric seats.

I have to move the tilt lever to upright the seat every now and then. Possibly every 200 to 300 miles.

Must be some sort of cam lever slipping back. Wouldn’t  happen if it was click in notches.

l will mention it to my dealer before 1st service.

I found this thread after Googling this very problem, which I have indeed experienced.  I have a Karoq 1.5 Tsi SEL DSG, which I took delivery of 3 weeks ago today.  At first, I thought I was imagining it, but I put it to the test by placing a blob of Blutak at the top of the adjustment knob, and checking its position from time to time, and, lo and behold, the adjustment knob does move, even during fairly short journeys.  It’s very annoying having to constantly readjust the seat back.  I’ve just received a courtesy email from my supplying dealer, so I shall mention this problem in my reply and see what comes of it.

No recline on my 2018 MY Karoq seats (non-leather, non-memory)

I've had a suspicion for a few months that my seatback is also slowly slipping back and now I know it's not just me! I've got the optional manual leather seats.

I'm going to raise it with the dealer at the first service but that won't be for a while but in the meantime it will be good to see if anyone else has any success with this with their dealer.

Nothing new, has been happening on seat recline mechanisms with knob adjustment (phnaar phnaar🤣) since the 90's if not earlier, I first noticed it in my Sierras and every car I have had since suffers.

I think it might actually be part of a safety mechanism because I suffered a major traumatic rear end shunt when stopped behind an accident on a motorway, Iblacked out and came round on the rear seat with the car gathering speed down the Reigate Hill section of the M25, car totalled of course and the drivers seat back was fully reclined.

I assumed that the mechanism had broken but it wound back into place and worked thereafter (I rebuilt the wreck) as it always had done needing to be raised every couple of weeks.

I contacted my dealer at the end of last week to report the driver's seat problem I have been experiencing, and my car was booked in for them to look at the problem.  I took it in 2 days ago, and the car was with them for the whole day.  They stripped the seat down, fitted new components (I don't know what), and I'm happy to say that the seat is now problem free.  I hope this helps others who have experienced this problem.

Wow, I thought I was imagining it!

Picked up Karoq 2.0 SE Tech 23/9. Have just made contact with my sales guy :)

I've only 3500 miles on mine and 5 months old.  Thanks RCC49. I  also thought I was going mad, but the problem has been getting more frequent! I finally aligned up the setback and turn knob with tape today and mine is almost a quarter turn out of position after a few miles of urban (speed bump) driving. It's ridiculous. I've previously had three Ford Focus's with the same type of recline mechanism and never had an issue.  I'm booked into my local dealer on the 10th. Would you be able to let me know what your dealer did to resolve it?

Sorry, only just seen this, so I guess your problem is resolved (hopefully!) by now.  I'm not sure precisely what was done.  It was described as stripping the seat down, and replacing components.  There was a more detailed note of what was done when I picked the car up, but when I tried to pick it up for safekeeping, the service receptionist told me it was their copy.  Whatever was done, it's certainly cured the problem.  I hope yours was sorted too.

seems like that to me can't get comfortable my wife keeps saying to me stop messing about with your seat and live it alone lol

Hello. No worries.

Thank you anyway. Not resolved yet, but the dealer has acknowledged the problem- which is a good start!

The car is booked in again in the new year for three days for the seat frame and mechanism to be completely replaced. So I'll have to wait and see.

In case anyone else is still having this problem-

I finally got my seat sorted under warranty. The entire seat frame had to be replaced.

This is a three day repair as it involves having your existing seat sent to a specialist trimmer to remove the leather 'skin' and fit it to the new frame.

However, the problem has been solved. If it's happening to your car, don't be fobbed off with 'they all do that' as they clearly shouldn't .

The dealer I used was Motorline in Dartford, Kent. So maybe ask your dealer to speak to them if they doubt your complaint.

I too have the same problem! I am reassured that it isn’t just me and hopefully this thread will help when I report the issue to the dealership. Thanks for posting.

Like the various comments I thought it was me at first, but having now measured the distance from the top of my drivers to steering wheel, and marking the recline knob over a 50 mile journey, top of the seat goes back over and inch and knob moves similar amount, about to contact the dealer to see if they have come up with a fix, fingers crossed 😀

Just had my seat base replaced. Recline dial much stiffer now!

I've spoken to the dealer today and registered the fault, they are going to look into it and call me back. Is it a  know fault with Skoda UK ?

It's such a stupid problem this. I'm glad to say the fix on mine seems to have worked and I've had no further issues. I don't know if it is a known fault with Skoda UK as such, but my dealer offered no resistance after I proved it was happening- and I get the impression that particular dealer is rather strict in regard to warranty work.  The BluTack trick suggested by @RCC49 above does the job well as proof. Suggest the mechanics do the test drive over suburban roads with speed bumps. Two miles was more than enough to prove there was a problem. I drove from London to the Highlands last summer and long motorway driving really did make me think it was me going mad. It moved back so subtlety I only noticed each time I got back in after stopping at the services.

Same is happening with my new Octavia Mk 4. It is quite gradual but irritating on a brand new car. Not sure how it can be fixed?

Deffo needs sorted but will wait until the 1st service in December.  SWMBO did wonder why I’d started driving with the seat so reclined, as pointed out above it’s so gradual I didn’t notice.
