Engine oil for RS245

Featured Replies

3250miles and you've already used up a 'top up' bottle,I'll assume that was a 1L size bottle too. 😲

  • If you buy 0w20 you will be a regular repeat customer.

  • Ok. Having come from a Disco 4 and the associated mega threads on D4 pages regarding oil I have read this one with interest.    I definitely do not want to upset anyone and everyone has view

  • Remember to check the tyre pressures on collection date the muppets who did my tyre pressures set them to 3.5bar all round which is dangerous on a performance model at nearly 50lb/psi. Idiots.

It's more like water than oil hence the consumption.:whew:

So that's 508 when topping up a new TSI before the first oil change service and probably 507 after it?

Probably but worth checking with whoever is doing the service to confirm what they're putting in it.

The only down side is that if you are  filling the cars engine with an Incorrect Oil spec for your engine, even if the dealer does it on a service and the engine goes pop down the line you might be snookered. If Skoda can riddle out of a warranty claim they will. "  Sorry Sir but you have been using the wrong oil for your engine, Go swivel ".

If the dealers are using different spec oil and saying it OK to use I'd be wanting the Oil Spec and Quantity written on the service sheet for evidence.

Really useful thanks guys. I'll go the 5w30 route.

I've only done about 250 miles so far, might go and check the oil level. Doubt its ever been topped up. I'm guessing this as it looks like a car that hasn't been messed with at all. IE no keys programmed, tyre pressures not set, no individual settings etc. Although the umbrella holder was empty I was disappointed to discover. 🤬

Even on new cars the umbrella is often missing. Mine was and the salesperson lifted one from a Race Blue showroom Vrs back in 2017.:whew:

Hmmm having thoughts about visiting the local Skoda dealer who wouldn't budge on price despite an identical spec and mileage car being £1000 cheaper 20 miles away. A rainy day would be an advantage, borrow an umbrella to have a look at the outside stock ….

Umbrella holder? mine was just in the passenger door pocket.  On the oil front I've topped up with 508 as that's what Skoda recommend.  I haven't found oil consumption to be excessive in fact similar to my previous VRS with a similar TSi engine with 5W30.   If Skoda dealers are filling 508 cars at service with 5W30 I think that's wrong. I expect my car to be serviced with the oil the factory recommends.

I'll just go with the flow....

I'll let my dealer decide what to put in and I'll ask what they use so that I can just top it up with the same stuff to ensure that I don't damage it or cause issues.

I bought a 1L bottle of 0w20 for topping it up. I've still got 0.5 L of 5w30 to use if it needs it whilst I'm waiting for the other one to arrive (shouldn't do).

My oil was full, car is on 5250 miles so unless topped up by previous owner or supplying dealer as part of their extensive checks (pardon the sarcasm) it doesn't look like its using any. I had a look at oil on TPS and it suggests 0w20, 5w30 or 0w40 for my reg. Hard to know what is what. I'm going to go the 5w30 route when I do an oil change. Its probably better to do an annual change with some VW approved oil than sit on my hands worrying about the grade. Annoying that it takes over 5ltrs, but I'll do my daughters SEAT soon and that takes VW 0w30 too so might as well get an extra pack.

BTW The power of advertising - when ever I think about oil "liquid engineering" comes to mind.

My local dealer confirmed the factory water like 0W-20 was replaced with slightly thicker viscosity 5W-30 which probably explains why it has used no oil in the last 8 months and 8,000 miles compared to using 1.25 litres topping up with the thin original keep the emissions low stuff from the factory. Makes sense to me.

Did you find out who the dealer confirmed with that 5W-30 oil was safe to use in the 245 or are are they confirming this between themselves. My 245 is 6 months old on Sunday, just turned over 7K miles, oil checked every week ( from cold and running temperature ) and has never needed a top up.

Going to ask them today if there is any difference between GPF 245 and my older 2017 model regarding what they leave the factory with and what they put in at service. Need to know whether I can use the same oil I already have for both cars. Update later today.

@shyVRS245

I guarantee you that you can use the same VW504 / 507 in both motors your tuned one and the new one.

But i would not use it from the PDI in the new one after checking the oil level at collection.

I would use the correct VW 508 /509 while running in the car, seeing all is well and finding out if there is any oil consumption greater than it should be.

Then deal with Skoda over that.

The First Service or sooner is time enough to change to VW504 IMO.

I'd be interested to know who decided different spec oil is safe to use in the 245 engine when the hand book clearly states, as posted by George in this thread, the the 245 Tsi needs 508/509 spec oil. Dealers/on line oil sellers and oil companies can't just alter oil specs for cars when the car uses a specified oil as recommended by the Factory who built the car.

Its all rather confusing

Sounds like time for someone to email Skoda UK, get it in writing 🤐

Just been to Garlands and they have confirmed that the correct oil for the MY19 245 RS is 0W20.

That's what I have ordered. I don't suppose that 0.5 l of 5W30 will hurt as that's what I used to get me home.

@TheWanderer

It will not hurt it.

What is ridiculous is Dealership Service or Parts desk staff not know what oil is what, selling customers asking for a litre the wrong spec as Skoda recommend regarding VW508/509

then saying even that is hard to get as members have posted in other sections.

Sending a customer to the Audi Dealership to get the correct oil really is taking the pith.

Maybe the workshops are using the correct oils now, maybe not, as it is the Service Prices might be going up if they do,

but then for years some have said VW504 / 507 was 'Special Oil'.

The footnote here is rather important, if really the emissions change because the Oil VW Group went for to get through the WLTP Certification.

I would rather use a bit more fuel, and have good engine protection with a TSI. That seems to be 5w 30 FS III now,  in the past i always went with VW502 spec and stuff Long Oil crap.

Having had a long chat with the local Skoda dealer's Master Tech he confirmed several interesting things about the oil in the 245. First it leaves the factory with 0w20 Fuchs long life engine oil but dealers stock only Castrol Edge so when you top up or have a service you are putting in another companies oil albeit to the same spec. He also confirmed that they are given the option of using either 0w20 or 5w30 on this engine. They normally carry 200 litres of the former and around 1,800 litres of the latter at any time.

Anyone used Triple QX oil.

5L of 0w20 of it for £25.29 at Euro Car Parts using code SALE55.

It's not just us or the dealers that are confused. The current owners manual doesn't state what oil to use it refers you to a "specialist".

I have half a bottle of 5W30 left over and I can't believe that adding this to 5 litres of 0W20 would make enough of a difference to be detectable, or cause any damage.

Nor can I, but that's all I had to get me home, so out of desperation I used 0.5 of it, no discernable difference in performance or operation of the car has been noticed.

Did the Master Tech tell you who gives them permission to use 5w30 oil as an option instead of 0w20 oil.  Is it the Dealer ship, Skoda UK, the factory or have they just made it up............?
