What turbo boost do TDI's run? Who has a gauge and boost controller? What about N75s?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys.

I am tempted to connect a boost gauge to my 1.4 PD TDI to check boost levels (probably the same as the 1.9 TDI's). Does any know or have access to info as to correct settings?

If they are correct which I am sure they will be I would like to increase boost slightly as I already have overfuling mods. I have read that most all ECU's can cope with about 20-30% more mapping that they actually do.

Is there a safe mod to up boost other than a ball and spring valve or bleed valve? I have read about an upgrade N75 valve but have been told this is no good on the PD TDI's :(

Also does anyone know where best to connect the boost gauge and when is the most easy place to install a boost controller?

Thanks all.

Just found this out:

"according to various sources 1.4 PD TDi engine uses Garrett VNT (Variable Nozzle Technology)15 turbocharger. It does not have any wastage system at all... The only way to regulate the boost pressure is to eaither fool boost sensor (the one fitted to the straight plastic pipe section, just before the manifold intake) or `re-map` your ECU tables..."

Is this correct and how can you regulate and fool boost sensor?

Thanks

THe only boost control is through the ECU management. A guage is easy enough to fit. Guage can be put inside the cabin somewhere, and the boost pipe tapped into the inlet manifold metalwork. :) Even wiring can be taken from the headlight wiring so that it lights up at night.

Thanks for tips on gauge install!

Any ideas on correct boost levels and how I can increase boost? Thanks

Do you have access to vag-com? If so you can log request boost and actual boost.

Increasing boost is essentially remapping, so involves nipping along to one of our friendly tuners.

Sorry to hijack your thread - does the TDI run an intercooler for the turbo?

I'm not about to start remapping mine, but it's good (and geeky!) to know what's there.

Edit - Presumably by wastage system you mean dump valve? So the TDI has no dump valve fitted?

Hewesy

Yes the 1.4/1.9 TDi does run an intercooler to the OSF behind the fog light (if it's in the same place as the vRS).

And nope no dump-valve is fitted, Turbodiesels don't generate the type of situation where it's required

Thanks for the replies - all good to know.

Cheers

A wastegate and dump valve are two different things. The wastegate controls boost level and the dump valve opens to dump boost when the throttle is closed to stop turbo stall. However the PD has neither of these.

Does anyone know the correct boost pressures for a 1.4 tdi? thanks

Given the 1.9 pushes about 1.15 bar as standard (guessing) I should think that perhaps the 1.4 pressure is around 1 bar?

I thought the PD130 pushed around 0.5 bar boost, around 0.65 once remapped?

Nooooo - PD130 standard boost is 1.35 I think limited (so about 18psi) and remapped to around 1.7. My hybrid is set to 1.8 bar but see over 2 bar regularly (30psi)

Even the Octavia 1.8Ts push a bar

So what is the MAX safe boost I can run?

Nope like Jason said 1.35bar. Remapped ones I've seen got to 1.9ba:eek: r. But dont think thats recommended

Looking at Vag-Com group 10, and using published logs, I get the following max boost pressures (i.e. IAP - ambient AP):

1.77 Bar (CC remap) = 26.1 PSI

1.67 Bar (Jabba remap)

1.65 Bar (mild CC remap)

1.45 Bar - Milltek exhaust, no remap -

Take it thats Actual boost pressure. Whats the requested boost pressure?

Group 10 just lists MAF, atmospheric air pressure, intake air pressure and throttle %.

IIRC requested boost on CC tends to be above max the turbo can give so it maxes out the turbo at all times when on full chat. Just something I heard whilst I was there, and it won't be the case if you're not blatting it 110% :D

Boost is controlled by the ecu opening and closing the vanes/ nozzle in the turbo, not via a wastegate- unless you don;t have a vnt.

  • 1 month later...

I got my guages fitted and wired up this weekend - boost, OP and OT - will post some pics if you like.

My boost gauge is only a cheapy and don't think it's too accurate - spikes under acceleration to well over 2 bar, but under normal (fast) driving it's between 1.7 and 1.9 :D
