Hi All,

 

just had a nice 2600 miles roundtrip in Europe this summer including the famous Autobahn

 

I made sure my octi VRS petrol had not 95 or 98 but 100 octane petrol in her

 

She flew. She was fully packed and did easily 153 mph or 244 kmh and could have done better but the traffic did not allow more. 

 

No performance upgrade so far only a good quality air filter. I wonder what stage one would mean in terms of speed?

 

 

Sits back whilst drinking coffee  and awaites the arrival of  shyVRS245

Unless they lift the speed limiter from 250kmh it would hit that, ie 155mph. They sometimes lift it to 300kph (186 mph) But I doubt they would hit it. To be honest you rarely get the chance to do anywhere near the top speed of any performance car, its more about enjoying the acceleration and ability to safely overtake (and leave idiots behind sometimes).

 

I don't feel the need to test my top speed, or wave my willy. In fairness to the OP if I was on the autobahn I would!!  

Top speed is surely down to the gearbox, isn't it? More power just means you hit the top speed more quickly.

sure I love the acceleration and frankly, in the UK, that is all you have however since I was driving through Germany it felt obvious to try

 

on another note good quality fuel makes such a big difference but paying 1.86 EUR/L was a bit steep

Did someone call. Lee is correct about the gearbox affecting the top speed but if you haven't got the power or the limiter removed you are not going to hit anything above 250kph on the Autobahn. My Octavia Vrs245 stage 2 tuned hit 283kph or 177mph at 5,900rpm in 6th gear for reference which is a bit scary I don't mind admitting. Won't be trying again anytime soon. Lesson over. Biscuits are nice with that coffee BTW.

Assuming the car was geared to be doing max speed at max revs, not something I've ever seen. Higher gearing = better fuel economy (within reason) - some cars are faster in 5th than 6th for example, they don't have the power to drive the higher gearing to anywhere near the redline. Shy has confirmed this while I was typing, gearing is probably good for a brief foray to 180mph if you have A ) the power, B ) the bottle, C ) the inclination or D ) A long enough downhill run. 

I've been able to tickle 160 in a stage 1 220, and had to stop due to upcoming bends, but felt like it was hitting its limits tbh.

 

That was on a dual carriageway with a downhill slip road.

That was on a private road/ runway/ race track/ autobahn* with a downhill slip road.

Hi, Interesting. What's your BHP approx? 

 

I think with age I'm getting more cautious. Not convinced I'd like to do 160mph on an empty motorway without checking my tyres and the road first. The prospect of a blow out at that speed doesn't bear thinking about.

To answer your original question stage 1 for a 220/230/245 gives around 300bhp with 99 octane fuel and my top speed without the limiter was 165mph and you get there much faster than the standard car can reach 150mph.

I hope everyone is reasonable enough to make sure the tyres are spot on.

 

I bought a brand new set of DUNLOP sport maxx RT2 tyres literally one day before my holiday.

Its apparently 290 at the wheels, but that's just the dyno run I got when it was mapped and never verified anywhere, so it's likely lower.

I don't think I'd be comfortable doing those speeds in a car of the Octavia's type/wheel width/profile etc, even in a legal setting.

I would have thought a bit of unexpected wind, an uneven bit of road and you're heading for disaster.

 

But then, top speed has never really interested me, it's all about acceleration and corners.

The Octavia VRS has bigger wheels and tyres then some 1980s Ferraris.   Brakes are probably better too considering those 80's icons were on 15" and 16" wheels which wouldn't fit over the VRS brakes.  

 

I've never driven at much more than 130 (in Germany by the way) but even at that speed I'd say the driver is the most likely component to cause disaster, not the car

You're right about older cars my 1994 BMW 325I Coupe came with 15" alloys and 205/60 tyres rated for 150mph when the car did 145mph at 6,500rpm in 5th gear. Soon fitted 8J x 17 alloys with 235/40 front and 245/40 rear tyres plus cross drilled Brembo discs front/rear.

When I had a 2015 VRS220 I had the chance to max it in Germany. 

At the first attempt, according to my OBD data logger, I was doing 149 when a car pulled out into the outside lane. It's amazing how good the VRS brakes are!! Very scary.

I did manage to max it eventually. 154.7 was the speed at which the front went a bit light on a slight left bend and the car drifted out to the middle lane - enough is enough I thought and slowed down.

The car was still accelerating slowly, but the aerodynamics were the limiting factor. 

When I got my VRS245, my missus said WE ARE NOT GOING TO GERMANY. 😊😊

Drive at 70mph on any UK motorway and count how many cars/vans overtake you obeying the speed limit. I think you will find the vast majority exceed the limit if you're being honest.

*Excluding the hundreds of miles of roadworks / smart motorway upgrades all fitted with delightful Av. Speed cameras.

Really? If you drive on any UK motorway not controlled by cameras and where traffic congestion isn't dictating the speed I'd say a majority of the traffic exceeds 70.   I've been driving since 1980 and its been like that the whole time I've been driving.   Only the technology to enforce the law and the volume of traffic has changed.
