Reversing car

Featured Replies

Ive just bought a 16 plate Octavia sel 1.6tdi. Ive noticed thwat the engine speeed increases when reverse gear is engaged. Can this be altered as i find that it is too fast when reversing into my drive. the opening is such that i have to enter at a slight angle. On the drivers side is a wall with a kink in it, and on the passenger side is an outbuilding wall approx 2 metres long.

Have you got a manual or dsg 'box?

Sorry i didnt say which box it was. Its the DSG gearbox.

I've a manual, but from my experience of driving auto's, I would assume it would be to allow you to keep your foot on the brake and control the car's speed with the brake pedal.

I know that I've only ever used the accelerator when reversing with an auto when it's been a bit of a gradient. I know a lot of cars usually increase the revs as you bring your foot off the brake.

How high are the revs getting when you're reversing?

To answer your question, no it can’t be adjusted. It’s a consequence of it being an automated manual rather than a proper automatic with a creep function. I know it doesn’t sound helpful but you’ll learn to get used to it, honestly :)

If it is too fast.......brake

simples

Only time I need throttle after releasing the brake when reversing is on an incline to tell the car to release the hill hold. Rest of the time its controlled on the brake only. All seems logical to me with DSG.

Despite driving manuals for 29 of the 30 years (yes its 30 years this month! lol) I've been driving it didn't take me long to fully adjust after getting my car is Nov last year.

It is however completely different from how you'd reverse a manual.

It was a little concerting as the entrance to my rear "concrete garden" is very tight, and if i dont get it exactly right, i have to fold the mirrors in.
