Minimum Wheel Sizes

Featured Replies

I'm new, I've searched  - probably missed/done it wrong - can't find anything much, so here's the first question:

What is the minimum wheel rim diameter to fit a Mklll (65 plate) Scout?

Reason for asking?  I want to organise some winter wheels and tyres, so rather than just start searching ebay for alleged correct fitment, I thought I'd get the low down.

I know the PCD/stud number, the current J size and ET, it's just the minimum rim diameter that's in question

What engine have you?

As far as I know the standard Octavia  150bhp has smaller front discs than the 181bhp. Unsure if this is the same for the Scout.

Therefore, 17's will fit, possibly 16's but would need caliper clearance checking. Do you have a spare? Is it a 16"? Or can you borrow a 16" VAG wheel for a few minutes to check caliper clearance?

If you have 312mm front brakes you can use 16’s. If you have 340mm front brakes you will need 17’s.

What size wheels have you got at the minute?

Are they steel or alloy?

How big is the gap between the existing wheel and the front brake caliper in inches?

What sizes of tyres/wheels are listed on the tyre pressure sticker plate?

This web site can help:-

Thanks AG Falco

The car is being prepped for me to collect later in the week.  I've just bought it and doing a little research whilst I twiddle my thumbs.  It will get plenty of winter use and I prefer to have a spare set of rims with winter tyres to swap over to - practice I adopted from years of living halfway up a mountain in the highlands of Scotland.

It's the 150 BHP version and currently on 17" alloys (the ones in the photo) so fairly low profile but not the rubber band variety.  18"s are a Skoda option but I'd sooner go smaller rim, larger aspect tyre.  I understand the bit about brake system clearance, I fell foul of it once many years ago.  Nice set of smaller diameter rims, wouldn't go over the calipers (bother!) and exactly what I'm trying to avoid now.

It does have a never used steel spare, not a bottle of sn*t - and I think 16" but I can't for the life of me remember for certain.  Annoyingly I do have a spare set of 15" alloys, very good (M&S) winter tyres, right PCD, etc and pretty close on rolling radius - but I'll lay odds they won't go over the calipers.......................

Thanks, think that's just answered it.  Spare set of 15" for sale by the look of it  🙄

SashaGrace has put it great.

2.0 TDI 150 and 184 hp can take no less than 16"

the smaller engines can also go with 15" because their brakes are different

Thanks, everybody.

That's settled.  A set of 15" wheels and M&S tyres for sale.

Ho hum.

There is a list of wheel sizes in the manual, along with whether or not they can be used with snow chains, this might answer your question.

I am going to test fit my 9mm snow chains bought for my previous car, even though Skoda does say my wheels aren't suitable (6.5Jx16, ET46), in case I need to be out of a hole in an emergency.

Thanks, micro.

Taking delivery tomorrow  😁, so there's obviously a lot of reading to be had in that handbook.

is your friend.

I flip from 16” summer wheels to 17” winter wheels for one vehicle and 19” to 17” on the other.

Also spent ages figuring out all the options while searching for wheels and tyres.

Another site I found quite recently

Hello all,

new here so forgive me jumping in to an ongoing thread but I have a wheel size related enquiry.

I own a 67 plate Octavia vrx tdi 4x4 with 19” rims & wish to fit smaller rims with snow tyres - I was hoping to fit 2nd hand 17” VAG rims as they are readily available but my research online, at wheel/tyre garages & at Skoda garage is inconclusive due to the large brake callipers. I am hoping someone will have some personal experience to guide me, thanks.

You'll have 312mm front discs so 17 x 7.5's with 225/45/17 tyres will be fine. Most VAG wheels will fit, so long as they are 5x112 pcd and 57.1mm bore with an offset between about 35 and 50.
