Cant fit new rear pads after winding back caliper?

Featured Replies

Hi.

I'm new to the forum, so sorry if this question is answered somewhere already.

I've a 2014 skoda mk2. 2.0  CR 140bhp.

When changing my rear pads. Ive wound the piston back as far as it appears to go. I used a winder tool for this. But cant get fit the caliper back on with the new pads and shims in place. The caliber is  winding back but not far enough.

So im wondering do i need to bleed the brakes while changing the pads to release pressure and let the piston go back further?

I've put the old pads back on in the meantime. There are borg and beck pads on it now and i was changing to mintex.

Cheers.

Tony

You may well have to remove some brake fluid from the system to allow the piston to be wound fully back.

How full is your brake fluid tank when you are doing this? If it's too full, all your doing is pressuring the system.

Hi.

Thanks for replying.

Brake fluid is halfway between min and max in the reservoir.

Would removing some fluid from the reservoir or bleeding it from the nipple be the best approach?

The fluid won't be stopping it as the system isn't sealed. What wind back tool as you using?

Isn't it clockwise on one side and anti-clockwise on another?

No, clockwise on both.

How far has the piston gone back?

I'd say its goes back to about 5 or 8mm from flush with the housing. Its all reassembled now so I cant measure exactly. Should it go back flush?

Pressurising was the wrong term to have used I should just said over filled, although based on the further comments that doesn't seem to be the case.

If the tank was full (as in over full to the brim) due to winding the pistons back. The excess brake fluid needs some where to go doesn't it? It worked for me anyway, unless there was some coincidental reason for that happening?

In my case reservoir was at upper mark, once front pistons were pushed back for new pads and discs followed by the rears which wouldn't go all the way back (much like the OP) as the reservoir was then over full right to the top. I removed cap and all of a sudden the piston wound back no bother, tank actually overflowed a little.

Why would that be?

Might the OP's piston be corroded?

Can you check you definitely have the right pads for your car again?

Did you change disks at same time? If so are they correct width, if not have you removed the outer lip?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'll try removing the some fluid and take the reservoir cap off see if that lets it retract more.

If not, then it does sound like it may be seized. I'll do the other side also and see if it behaves the same way.

Thanks. Really appreciated the help.

Let us know you get on mate.

Thanks for all the responses,

Just realised I hadn't closed this off.

The caliper was indeed seized, but removing the brake fluid definitely made it easier to rewind.

Thanks again.
