Have I been ripped off?

Just yesterday I picked up a 60k mile 2014 l&k Superb estate, bodywork is nice. Interior looks in very good condition even though it's cream which would show wear easily. Wheels only have small blistering at the centre, a common diamond cut issue. I paid £11200 from an independent dealer after putting a deposit on it remotely and travelling 2 hours to get it.

My issue is that last night once dark I realised the Columbus lights up red, and on a restart it shows a VW logo. I'm trying to decide if this is an issue or could be a problem?

Everything seems to work, although I had to re-seat the TV tuner cable in the boot, but then I had digital. Just my steering volume control and 'voice' buttons don't. Volume is a minor issue, although tbf was hoping was a minor fix as I was in a hurry for a car and needed one by Tuesday. Voice I read nothing but complaints about so probably not missing anything.

Only other thing is no Bluetooth option under 'media' although not sure if there should be, phone prep works though.

Should I be pi55ed? Or is this a suitable situation for a possible previously dead or stolen head unit?

The garage seemed to specialise in VW t5s amongst others so would have been aware, but the feature list on the advert is technically correct.

Thanks in advance.

Good price that. Even brakes and tyres you'll be best part of 1k under me!

I was limited in choice on a very short timescale after my car was written off. The only other at a dealer was 10650 at Evans halshaw Sunderland. A big journey for me and EH reviews were enough to put me off!

Vcds seems expensive to buy myself, know anywhere near Preston to check or is it fairly common?

Never had a VAG vehicle before

Thanks

The 510 VW logo can be changed to a Skoda logo with a disc update, don't think you can change the red LED backlighting easily though.

Could be someone wanted a 510 Columbus and managed to get one from another vehicle on the forecourt (being a T5 dealer), I would not be so worried about that or the bluetooth as they are options, and they wanted a multifunction steering wheel but got the wrong one or not coded correctly so again not so much of an issue, what I would be looking into is the vehicles service history, previous owners and any evidence of previous accidents.

Your Columbus could be sold on Ebay or similar and a green backlit Skoda one bought instead, same with the MFSW.

Buying from a trade outlet will always be more expensive as they apply warranties and make a profit.

I bought my 12 plate 170 4x4 manual gearbox with almost all options bar sunroof, 38K on the clock mint for 8.5K privately BUT the colour was horrible. I was able to look into it's history and all options fitted prior to looking at it, but had no comeback if something was wrong as sold as seen. At least you can take yours back if it turns out to be not what it seems which is good.

Thanks for the input. I can take the price paid, as you said because I wanted come back. Ripped off may have been wrong term "mugged off" may have been better. Another words if having a VW Columbus is a problem in itself. Sounds like it 'may' be an issue with steering volume control. I'm no wiser if I should have voice control and if that's to do with the VW unit - even though I'm told I'm not missing out.

Basically no idea if this head unit is same spec. Better or worse. Or if it's causing or likely to cause issues.

The RNS510 (VW name) is the same as the Columbus (skoda name) bar the colours of the buttons, red instead of green, its sounds as though they fiited and have not bothered to code it in or it could need CP (Component Protection) removed then recoding to your vehicle, A skoda dealer can probably remove the CP but may not recode it.

The MFSW may just need coding as there is no CP on them.

I would not bother with the voice recognition as it's very hit and miss.

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask the seller to supply and fit an original headunit, especially if they didn't make it clear that the vehicle was fitted with a non-genuine one.

Red Volkswagen illumination, surrounded by green Skoda lighting would annoy me.

I don't think it annoys me the red lighting, so far at least. Regards coding etc. My skip track and phone buttons work on the wheel, just not volume and voice. Still possible coding problem?

Got to decide if it's worth a 2hr drive back or a fix I can sort locally, or a wire break etc.

If the VW head isn't a negative except Colour, I may choose to live with it.

It has been played with though, TV stayed on whilst driving

You have dodged a bullet with the L&K at Evans Halshaw! Absolute dog that was entered into Manheim auctions Washington on 12th August & failed to sell for four weeks....bit of a mystery how EH ended up with it, can only guess they are desperate for stock!

Take it back for the selling dealer to sort - the law is on your side (Consumer Rights Act 2015).

If bluetooth fitted (even my 2014 facelift S model has this!) then the module should be under a cover in ftont of the drivers seat

It does have Bluetooth, the op states that phone prep works. What isn't working is Bluetooth media, which will undoubtedly be a coding issue.

Prstu, if you wanna drive up th North Yorks I'll scan it for you, sort out the coding issues (if possible) and if you can't live with a VW unit (or it can't be coded to work with your car) then I should be able to trade you a genuine Skoda Columbus for your VW RNS510 for a small fee.

Cheers.

On hols atm but may take you up on that rustynuts.

Sounds like fears were right on the EH l&k. Glad I didn't waste the journey!

I should add, I do have BT audio now, my bad. Not used to the system, it was hidden due to aux etc being enabled so only showed as an option once audio was playing on my phone!

So I'm down to mfsw volume and speech not working. Which could be coding or physical issue. And it being red, which itself may not bother me if I'm not missing out. Although a switch to green Columbus would still be of interest dep. on price so it just feels original. Other than that TV works when moving, which isn't a negative until I'm caught mid movie in the fast lane and I'm assuming someone's just set that option when they hooked up to a pc

  • 3 weeks later...

Just to follow up on this.

My head unit went into endless rebooting cycles a couple days ago after I had started clearing the last owners music from the HDD.

Looked it up and it seems to be a symptom of Hard Drive death which figures as I was scrubbing files and adding my own.

Spoke to the dealer I got the car from and he's ordered a Skoda version with latest maps and 5238 (I think) software from ebay to warranty replace.

This does have the microphone button on it, instead of the speaker button top right on the broken very early (I suspect) VW RNS unit I have currently. So I'll see what works after this is installed. I suspect it's not going to be the latest HW version but I 'may' get voice back and hopefully MFSW volume if it is actually coded correctly for the car. I have no idea if the car dealer has VCDS facility, so just kinda hoping I get plug n' play and it works! (or he does have the software.)
