Appropriate fuse to tap for a dash cam

Featured Replies

Hello,

Earlier this week I took my Fabia to my local Halfords to have a dash cam fitted (identical price in-store for the camera to my usual online sources, fitting was in effect free due to a discount I had).  While the guy was fitting it I asked which fuse he was using with the fuse tap cable and he replied that they used one which was switched with the ignition and was not safety related which seemed fine to me.  At the time I wasn't able to see which fuse he'd tapped.  When I got home I had a look and to my horror discovered that he'd tapped fuse 29 which is labelled "airbag" in my manual.  This sounds to me very much like a safety related fuse!  Unfortunately he didn't give me the second fuse tap cable (the one with the normal rather than mini fuse tap) so I couldn't swap it to use something like fuse 27 (rear window wiper) and the majority of the other mini fuses fitted in my fuse box appeared to be permanently live or not ignition switched (e.g. front and rear window washer system which appeared to only be live when the washers were in use).  I did however discover that fuse position 36 (Heated front seats) was ignition switched even those this feature is not installed and no fuse was present, and so this is where my dash cam's power supply is currently connected.  Please could someone confirm,

1. That tapping the airbag fuse is not a good idea.

2. That tapping an unused fuse location (Heated front seats) is a safe and suitable thing to do instead?

Kind regards, Alec

I fitted it myself and used the "Heated front seats" fuse.

(I don't have "Heated front seats")

I'm using 34, which is "Heated windscreen washer jets". It was empty, just like the heated front seats and has been fine for me.

I use the airbag one. Fine for me.

Dealer fitted mine it’s in an unused slot I will update tomorrow.

When fitting my dashcam i checked which fuses were Igntion switched and found Airbag fuse to be suitable, but thought too it was risky, just because!

so I too found no fuse in Heated seats (i dont have that feature), so just used that empty fuse.

All good.
