Bit of selling advice please!

Featured Replies

Evening all

Hoping some of you out there might be kind enough to offer some advice.

Situation is sadly I'm having to let my vRS go after 2 very enjoyable years due to needing a back seat that'll fit 3 full size car seats for the sprogs.

My concern is that despite having the car advertised on various platforms for going on 2 months now, I've had no interest bar one person who got in touch but was too far away to come view it. Having passed on much inferior previous cars with nowhere near this level of hassle I'm thinking something might be up. I have the car listed on here in Classifieds and is as advertised on other platforms aside from a car features list - https://www.briskoda.net/forums/classifieds/item/26-2010-vrs-mkii-fl-for-sale-£5200-ono-excellent-condition-mot-till-0620/

If there's anything that stands out about either the ad or motor itself that could be dissuading peoples interest, I'd be grateful for any feedback anyone can offer either by reply or PM. I'm on a bit of a time restriction and as much as it would give me the dry boak (dry heave for non weegie slang speakers), I am worried I might end up speaking to a representative of "we buy any car".

Kind regards and thanks in advance

Paddy

Take out any comments that are negative.

People want to know about mileage, registration, service history, general condition, tyres. Explain jargon.  Most buyers haven't a clue.

Here's my take on it as parts of it i wasn't sure what you meant. you sell the sizzle, not the sausage.

Sadly having to sell my beloved vRS as my growing family now requires a 7 seater.

This Skoda Octavia vRS hatch is in great condition inside and out and presents well.

Travelled 81,125 miles.

2.0litre 200bhp engine the same as a Golf GTI. Very economical on fuel but drives very well

?????? gearbox

Standard factory Sport Suspension the same as a Golf GTI

Factory fitted Xenon High Intensity Discharge headlights that give a much better beam than the usual halogen lights.

MOT'd back in June so good till Jun 2020. Passed with no advisories remaining.

Car has been regularly serviced and has recently had new front springs, headlight level sensor and rear N/S bearing replaced.

Tyres have ???% remaining.

MOT'd back in June so good till Jun 2020. Passed with no advisories remaining. car has been regularly serviced and has recently had new front springs, headlight level sensor and rear N/S bearing replaced.

Includes 2 rear passenger window screens and a boot floor protector too included. The floor protector has been a godsend in protecting the boot carpet from buggy wheels etc.

This Skoda Octavia vRS hatch has all the versatility of a Golf GTI with more than twice the luggage capacity.

All in all this is a fantastic car and I'll be very sorry to see it go but needs must. It drives great with no issues whatsoever.

Any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch. Asking price is £5,200 and am open to reasonable offers. Thanks! Simon - 07909 226431

In my sales training years ago the word was "sell benefits, not features"; I think I prefer your version :)

On platforms that don't have good succinct list of features prominently located (and / or benefits!), I think it is worth having a summary, as @brad1.8T lists with bullet points as the opening or closing section, with a Bold Heading so it stands out to someone who doesn't want to read, they see that to find key information.

Some text explaining context, reason for sale and service history gives a bit of a flavour about the sort of owner you are (as you have included). I don't think you need to give the detail on the actual repairs carried out, just say fastidiously maintained with all service and consumable items replaced as needed....receipts and details available.   But it is probably doing no harm.

On the Briskoda advert, anyone who looks at it probably knows a bit about the model, so unless your advert lacks credibility,  it won't make or break a sale.

It could be just a case of the time of year, time of political timing and dare I say your location in Scotland which maybe limiting the market size a bit, so maybe a case of waiting......

I own a similar aged and model car, the other thing as you maybe aware of that more knowledgeable buyers will want to know about would be the timing chain tensioner and oil usage, but I wouldn't mention it in advert but expect to be asked by a keen knowledgeable enthusiast purchaser.

Maybe knock the price to under £5k and exclude the text about negotiation and see if it kick start interest anymore if you're in a hurry.

My 2 cents.

Never say in an advert that you are in a hurry unless you sell it under the threshold price of the market.

List all the features of the car. People narrow their search based on key words (like Xenon, HID, ISOfix, etc.) to save time.

Describe the maintenance of the car. Better well maintained than low mileage and neglected.

Emphasize on strong points that interest a buyer. Put yourself in his/her shoes and read your ad again. You'll know if it's OK.

Take into account it might be no interest for your type of car in general, not because your ad is wrong and adjust your strategy.

Re write your advert - do a quick short intro into the car to cover the fact is lower mileage then most on the market, general overview of condition and if has Optional extras something like :

Due to a growing family my Skoda Octavia VRS is now up for sale. It features excellent bodywork and a full service history with plenty of optional extras as follows:

* full service history with a recent full service having been carried out

* MOT until June 2020

* xenons

* Bluetooth

then Continue to list all the options it has.  Next I’d then bullet point the maintenance and upgraded parts and then finish with location of the vehicle and the fact test drives are welcome with proof of insurance.

id be tempted to have the price sit at £4995 to get the interest and not take an offer rather then having it sit at a higher price in the hope of getting an offer. Mention if your close to an airport or train station and offer to pick people up upon any queries
