Timing chain replacement

Recommended Posts

Hi guys been told by a VAG garage that my mk2 vrs 2009 has a rattle on the timing chain on cold starts so will need replacing at some point. Any info on the price/experiences will be appreciated!

My 63 plate Roomster chain driven tsi has the improved chain and tensioner but still occasionally rattles on cold start ups. Sometimes it does it sometimes not. Engine has done 36k so not unduly worn. I must say when the engine had Shell Helix Ultra oil it happened rarely but since the dealer has changed franchise and used Castrol Edge it happens more often. Perhaps coincidence but Shell Ultra was 0W-30W and Castrol Edge 5W-30W so perhaps Shell being thinner when cold circulates and builds oil pressure quicker.

is it a FL model?

Listen, Listen carefully. Get it done before things go bad. I didn't, I regretted it.

I think my chain was between £1200 (indie) and £1600  (VW specialist) to do. It isn't cheap, but cheaper than buying a new engine/car.

It's cost me over £3000 and still isn't running quite right and at this point I doubt it ever will.

The part has been revised multiple times.

Yeah it's the FL model done around 77k I have read before this model has had problems with the timing chain's around the 80k mark so be best to get it sorted than pay for a new engine/car. Thanks for the info guy's 👍

It's not mileage related, please check the sticky thread on 1.8 and 2.0 tsi engine failures. I had my tensioner replaced at 48k miles, as a precaution. Only had the tensioner done and was £280 at an independent. However it wouid be more sensible to do both chain and tensioner as the chain does have a new design too.

Please re the sticky, you'll see folks that have thought it woukdnt fail and then come back to report they wish they had it done sooner
