Flashing glowplug light and engine management light

Featured Replies

Advice needed.

Did a search BTW before posting.

Car reached end of trip no issues this cold morning.

Restarted engine after 30mins. Flashing glowplug and constant engine management light. Manual suggests an emission control issue.

No DPF regeneration was interrupted prior to engine shut down .

I switched off ignition and restarted engine and no warning lights. Performance was as normal.

Is this the first sign of DPF blocking up?

Car is octavia 3 2016 2l 150bhp /110kw dsg 6 speed.

Might be a good time to buy VCDS...

Maybe take it out on the motorway and drive it at 70mph in 4th gear for a while (like 15mins)? Hold it at about 4000rpm.

DPF errors have their own warning light.

The MIL Lamp indicates an error detected by the ECU which can affect emissions.

This can be anything from the a temperature sensor, pressure sensor, speed sensors, injectors, EGR valve etc etc etc

To understand the source of the error, you will need to read the fault codes (either yourself with a OBD reader, VCDS or at a garage).

Forget all the panic about DPF until you know what the fault is. Quite possibly just a fault sensor which is cheap & quick to replace.

Providing you dont drive for thousands of killometers with the lights active, the "limp-home" behaviour of the engine is designed to protect it when faults occur so its fine to drive in the short term to get to a garage.

You have the 'Emission control system' and 'Preheating unit' lights lit, extracts from a 2016 owners manual.

Emission control system lights up - there is a fault in the emission control system. The system makes it possible to drive on in emergency mode - there may be a noticeable reduction in engine performance.

Preheating unit (diesel) flashes – there is a fault in the engine management system. The system makes possible operation emergency mode - there may be a noticeable reduction in engine performance. There is a fault in the glow plug system if the warning light does not come on or illuminates continuously.

The Diesel particle filter (diesel) light is not lit so I doubt it'll be the DPF filling up or needing a regen drive...

The manual states you can drive on, exercising appropriate caution. Seek assistance from a specialist garage immediately.

I'd very much suggest getting it checked sooner rather than later as the faults could be preventing DPF regens.

The light has not reappeared but I agree the codes need reading sooner than later with Vcds - if I buy the unlimited package do you get a CD that can be used to reinstall the software if my laptop breaks? Do you need to subscribe to updates? VCDS would be useful for the DSG oil and filter and to check fine tune timing on my mk1 Fabia, abs actuation etc.

Could I buy an update at a later date if I buy another vag car? Thanks

The VCDS Licence is contained in the intelligent cable - the software is downloaded from the Ross-Tech website.

If you intend to buy VCDS, I'd probably suggest a 3 or 10 VIN HEX-V2. The latter is better value and both can be updated to allow more VIN's.

As mentioned above, the licence is built into the cable so it'll work on as many computers as you want. The software is downloaded directly from ross-tech and is updated regularly. Watch out for cloned interfaces, clues that it's a clone include a software CD, a specific VCDS version or it being cheap...

You can also check the VCDS owners list and map to find a local member who might be happy to perform a scan for you :)

It is designed for VAG group interface. What will happen if it is connected to another manufacturer's car? Basic engine error codes available or nothing?

Thanks

So if the software is downloaded and installed then the laptop dies over one year later, can I then redownload software using the same cable? Thanks

Yup, if the laptop dies the software can be downloaded again and used on a different machine. You can even have it installed on multiple laptops at once :)

As for other makes, it should function as a basic OBD2 reader. I've used it once on a MK2 Ford Ka when it was overheating...

ive got the same warning lights on as well. Mind you ive got a pipe that's broken for the brakes. don't know if that's relvent.

A broken brake pipe!? 😳

Yeah. It’s for the servo. Got the aa out this morning to fix it. The car was due for a service so I’ll get the dealer to change it as well as the service.

The car won't be happy with a vacuum leak there and it will cause other issues.

Since initially reporting the two lights have not reappeared. I am going to buy VCDS package and scan myself. Garages charge £100 for a scan.

Brakes are fine. Only thing I can think if is that my foot was only lightly touching brake pedal as I went to start car. It is DSG auto so needs brake pedal pressing down to start. The car had some BP ultimate in tank (not.my usual choice) and before switching off engine a few miles back I had to floor accelerator in 1st to allow HGV my car space as its braking space when a learner driver ahead unexpectedly stalled car i was behind who was behind a push bike over a blind brow of hill. This ISBN a 60mph b road.

I hate doing it , the car traction control makes a right noise with DSG and it felt as I had a driveshaft undEr car, even though it's 2wheel drive. I think it was force of exhaust gases going through exhaust.

Where is the affected vacuum pipe?

Thanks

Just by the air filter housing. I'll get a photo when I get the car back next Friday.

Did your brakes feel spongy?

Nope. Went hard. Had no servo assistance.

Despite having a new EGR valve fitted last year and doing various trips from long to short each week, I now get the same warning lights on the dash. It started with the DPF light but after a 20 minute drive at high revs in 4th gear the light went off.

...but a fortnight later I have these two lights appearing, see my photo.

UPDATE:  I bought VCDS and did the autoscan after finally getting time to set everything up.

Selected summary:

01-Engine -- Status: Malfunction 0010

09-Cent. Elect. -- Status: Malfunction 0010

19-CAN Gateway -- Status: Malfunction 0010

The 01 and 09 faults probably brought the EML and glowplug light on and the date matches the dash lights appearing when ignition got switched on but engine not started.

The 19 CAN Gateway fault humidity sensor has gone off a lot (64 separate logged faults). The nearest I could google is a ball shaped humidity sensor from a Golf 7. Not sure where this is located or how to check it is working fine.

I'd be focusing on P26FA Air in System.

This is likely directly attributable to the EGR replacement, and worthy of a zero-cost warranty claim with whoever replaced the EGR for you.
