Noise from behind dashboard in region of the fans

Featured Replies

2019 Superb estate.
I have this noise, like a plasticy grinding noise coming from behind the dashboard in the region of the fans and above the info screen. It doesn't seem like a healthy sound, certainly not normal or anything I have ever had on other vehicles. It can last anywhere between 10 and 20+ seconds at any given time and starts shortly after ignition.

It occurs mainly each first start of the day but also periodically throughout now too. It wasn't there from first purchasing the vehicle. The dealership have two recordings but I am struggling to get them to listen to it! I have attached one of those recordings (video and audio file) and would appreciate any feedback that I can use to help raise my complaint. The recording was taken from my phone, the phone was simply resting on the dash. I have not amplified the sound in any way. It starts around 4 seconds in.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Is it speed related, does it occur when the car is stationery or just at speed?

it just starts shortly after ignition and is not impacted by the vehicle moving - it does it regardless.

Has the dealer actually sat in the car whilst the noise is occurring.  It would be hard to play that down and say "they all do that", as they don't.  It's not normal.

It sounds quite deep to be a trim rattle and IME, trim rattles tend to change tone/frequency or completely disappear at certain revs/speeds. Though there are a/c pipes and such that run behind that bulkhead in that area, which have been known to cause problems.  The firewall, and heat shields are also on the engine side of the bulkhead and have also been known to vibrate badly.

I'm guessing your car is a diesel based on the video?

Yes, diesel. It almost sounds like grinding plastic cogs - or bearings. Always does it first start of the day.

I had something similar on two Astras! Once was some leaf debris rattling in the pollen filter, the other was the fan rubbing on the housing (mostly whilst cold) - I'd had a tow-bar fitted and the carpet had been disturbed that slightly deflected the ducting.

I believe if either of these were responsible I think it would probably do it more frequently. As I mention, it does sound more like plastic cogs grinding or bearings rattling.

^ Good advice. The sound is probably in the dash but you can check the above easily, so would be one thing to try first to try and narrow it down.

Think it may be the heater fans - I had the fans off when starting a short while ago and then turned the heater on after starting - the noise seemed to start only after I turned the heater/fans on.

Could well be to do with ventilation.

If there was debris rattling around in the fan area, or a bearing you would hear it all the time?

Could be a vent resonance problem, I would try the following:

Divert air to screen, see if the noise is there.

Then just to centre vents.

Then just to floor. See if the noise is related to one of the internal flaps.

Then play with opening and closing individual dash air outlets to see if that locates it.

You could check the pollen filter and housing to see if all is well there to.

Hi.

It's a loose air con pipe. Had the same on my old passat and it's now happening on my 08 superb. Below the radio.

Sorry 181 superb. Its starts around 1500 revs and gets worse over time

The Aircon pipe is a known issue, should be sorted under warranty.

Hi - it has been diagnosed!
None of the above! The heating unit has, apparently, 4 pairs of plastic cogs on either side doing whatever their job is. One pair is either misaligned or loose or something.

It makes a hell of a racket, amplified no doubt by the nature of the ventilation ducts. Car is back at Skoda for the repair. Had more trips to Skoda for repairs than I have to the pub this year! I have only had it 3 months from new. After handing back the first Superb, 1.5tsi for full refund following unfixable kangarooing can't say I am overly impressed with the build quality of these beasts.

Do you know if that's accessible by removing the two central dash fans or does it need access from the rear of the dash, possibly via the passenger footwell?

Just for the record. Skoda say the aircon pipe rattle was with older 2017 and earlier models.

Oh good grief. So Skoda had my car TEN days! Said they had resolved it, tested it several times and it is not making the noise any longer.
Arrived to collect it, entered the car, with the manager, started it... problem still there!! Well that was an enormous waste of my time, plus no use of my vehicle for 10 days. Not feeling very chipper!

Hello Slantey

Did you ever get it fixed and found out the problem? I think I have the same on my superb 2019 2.0 tdi. Gonna go the dealer tomorrow
