TDI ENGINE BLANKET

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Anyone out there using/used an engine blanket on the TDI vrs diesel engine?  Does it or did it make any difference?  Mine sounds really noisy on idle from the outside but it is quiet when driving.  I have soundprooofed the bonnet  but the racket is still there. The main dealer says it is normal - no surprise there.  I was thinking of fitting an engine blanket to see if that makes any difference.

IIRC it's heat insulation and not sound.

The liner under the bonnet is for sound, however it's also very effective for getting the engine to warm up quickly in the winter mornings.

Yours is diesel, you should expect it to be noisier than a petrol, if you wanted a quiet engine then you should have bought a petrol engined car. Mine is quiet and it's a petrol.

Thanks for your input guys.  I am only new to Skoda but not cars.  I have both petrol and diesel cars and have had many over the years but this one is more noisy than my Shogun.   I have spent the last 10 years in a workshop that repairs Land Rover Defenders mainly so I know a noisy engine when I hear one:-).

As for the blanket, I also get the heat side of it but, the manufacturer says otherwise : https://www.nkgroup.co.uk/product/vehicle-acoustic-engine-blankets/.  I think I will give that idea a miss.

I will probably take the wheel arch liners off and soundproof the arches and maybe the undertray to see if that makes any difference.

I have fitted extra soundproofing material underneath the original pre-fitted under-bonnet pad as that is mainly for heat-proofing. I have also fitted an engine blanket from nkgroup. It had to be custom made as the Octavia has odd bits sticking out. Both of these do reduce the engine noise, especially from outside but it is calmer inside, especially when cruising, You can hold a normal conversation at 70 mph with no problem, but as the engine is only just over 2000 rpm at that speed it's not surprising. No effect on engine overheating as it's water-cooled of course. The major noise is/was road noise, but I have silent-coated the rear of the car and fitted acoustic foam under the rear compartment carpet and under the rear seat. It is now where it should have been. Interestingly, my son has bought an Audi A3 TDi and it is much quieter than the Octavia, but there is a lot of sound-deadening material and insulation built in. I will be taking a serious look at the A4 Avant for my next car.

Thank you very much for your reply:  Good to hear that it works for others. I have actually fitted Dodo Mat sound deadening mats plus their under bonnet insulation eneath the standard bonnet liner. I have insulated the boot, the spare wheel well and put underlay with a rubber mat on top to keep it quiet at the rear.  On the basis of what you say and the need to stop the engine noise, I will get NK to make one for me.  As you rightly say, road noise is another matter.

I have already  been looking at the A4 Avant which also has a better quality feel to it but I find this noise elimination/reduction is a challenge that I have to take on first.
