Brake kits

Featured Replies

Hi to all

I’m brand new to the forums and I was looking for some input from ya’ll, I have just stage 2 my 2018 vrs , I’m running 19’s on all corners p zero’s.  Been driving it and def needs some stopping power.  Was seeing if anyone recommend a reasonable upgraded brake kit, without hurting the wallet to much,  looking at Brembo, any one with experience with these or or no good or something else?, thanks 🙂

All brake work is expensive and you deffo should be willing to spend the money on it; if you have stage 2 power you will need to budget the best hardware if you are staying on standard calipers. You don’t say if you have a 230 or a 245 but if you have a 230 you will have 272mm solid rear brakes which are a little puny and unbalanced against the 340mm fronts. The 245 has 310mm vented rear brakes which are much better and you can change the 272’s to 310’s (I’ve done this, it’s not that hard or expensive). As for the front, if you are keeping the calipers you’ll want to look at the Golf Clubsport discs and pads, the discs are 0.9kgs per side lighter than OEM. If you want to go multi pot the best bang for buck setup is the Aston DB9 Brembo front calipers with either 340 or 370mm front discs. These are the same Brembo's used on the RS3 8P but cheaper with an Aston logo. The newer 8 pot RS3 8V calipers also fit but not the wavy discs, only the 8P 370 discs. TTS 8S 4 pots are also a bargain for use with 340mm discs and don’t need an adaptor bracket. Porsche 17 and 18Z’s DO NOT FIT, I write this in capitals as people seem convinced that they do, but they don’t and it’s not just a case of changing the steering knuckles, there is more to it than that.

Below is my front brake setup, DB9 calipers, OEM spec pads, Golf CS discs and HEL braided lines. Done Audi S3 8P 310mm rear conversion too with Brembo discs and pads also with HEL braided lines.

how extravagant are you wanting to be? and you say brembo, brembo what? Pads, discs?

The main question is what's the problem with your current brakes? I've driven numerous times on some of the gloriously twisty road in the lakes and round the horseshoe pass in Wales and not once have I felt the brakes were not up to the task. The main thing I feel lets my car down are the tyres (Bridgestone Potenzas). I do intend to change them, but they are lasting a hell of a long time. The issue with them is their not particularly great in the damp and the cold. Either of those and under excessive braking leads to the fronts wanting to lock up

As above, I want to do a similar set up to sasha. My pipe dream (and it's unfortunately taking a while to save) is to throw a set of the racingline stage 2 kits on. 4 pots, 345mm discs and sport pads.

Hi

ok you certainly know your stuff, I have a 230bhp last of the sep 2018, when I say I don’t want to hurt the wallet i can push the boat out a wee bit if I have to.  May I ask what your overall spend was on your brakes/discs??

Hi

Pads and discs my friend.  My tyres are fine, stock brakes feel a bit spongy, I wanna make the car feel more safe and I’m prepared to spend if I have to, stage 3 with golf r is38 turbo could on cards next year and poss track days ahead.  I like Sasha’s set up, she looks like she knows what she is doing

My car is pushing 374 bhp and 540 nm, I think brakes are important before stage 3 goes on

If you're going trackdaying then I'd do a set of 4 pots and empty the brake fluid and refill it with some high quality stuff. Braided lines front and rear as well.

You'll notice more of an improvement with upgrading the fronts. Make sure you get a fast road, light track oriented pads, but avoid more track oriented pads. They don't work at normal road speeds as they don't get the temperature in them from normal braking.

I did pads and discs front and rear on my old car and the rears didn't make an ounce of difference.

Don't forget your suspension too. Have you done anything to it so far?

  • Author

No nothing to the suspension thus far, been warned by Skoda that possibility would upset DCC, however garage that done the car said just springs lowering 25mm to 40mm should not do any harm and won’t affect the balance.  Thanks for the advice re brakes.  Is yours modded??

Only running 336bhp stage 2 on my Vrs245 but my standard discs are better than your 230 with 32mm thick 340mm vented front and 22mm thick vented rear 310mm discs and standard pads. Done 2 track days with HEL Braided stainless brake line kit and DOT 5.1 Motorsport spec brake fluid which copes well with repeated stops from 120mph down to 60mph on track. Total cost around £300 fitted by AmD in Grays, Essex which are very good and no fade with these discs/pads.

No, not yet. But again I'm saving up and plan on getting coilovers

Nice, I think lowering certainly finishes off the look, obviously if you live where I live and the roads are shockingly bad then probably not 🙂

So that £300 was for fitting lines and brake fluid??

Interesting, Ok I’m getting good feedback here,  I think I have enough info, I’m gonna make some calls tomorrow to what’s out there, thanks very much.  I want to take the car up to and over 400 bhp eventually, stage 3.  Sourcing a recon is38 turbo is also on the Xmas list.  This will keep me busy for a while

For the front it was about £900. £300 for the calipers from a Polish exotic car breaker had the paint to touch them up at home anyway (it’s RAL3000 Red in this case), £330 for new discs, £160 for brackets and HEL lines, £70 for OEM pads, can get fast road for about £110-120 also did new fluid and RS3 cooling ducts in the deal. This is about as cheap as I’ve seen 4 pots fitted to an Octy and the car really stops now. I did Silverstone recently and was lapping with an IS38 equipped 380 bhp Octy on standard brakes and under

breaking and round corners I was faster as I could hold more speed; obviously on the straights my 227 bhp mapped TDI was left for dead though. My car is also now lowered on H&R 40mm springs and it makes a big difference.

374 bhp at Stage 2? What a happy dyno that was.

Anyway I went to DBA T3 grooved front discs and T2 rear with Forza FP3 street performance pads and the difference has been remarkable, they still have the nice bitey feel in usual street driving, much less dust and they don't fade at all on a backroad thrash and seem to be lasting ages. Yet to do a track day though.

I don't believe a 230 can make 374bhp at stage 2 as Ant's 220 made 331bhp and only 390bhp with the Golf R bigger IS38 turbo.

Yep best gains garage had seen from an is20 stock, I thought it would come out at around 350 but gained the extra bhp which I was very pleased with

Your discs look good, I’m a bit spoilt for choice now, I really want to get mine done now, my stage 1 was apr map, air induction kit that took it to 313bhp. Then Apr Stage 2, Wagner intercooler, dsg stage 1, performance plugs, milltek non res catback with scorpion sports downpipe.

What fuel did you use for the dyno run and any octane booster put in the fuel tank?:whew:

Shell v power and no octane booster, if is38 goes in then should get 400 bhp

Read that in America Golf GTi MK7 owners use Audi RS3 COIL PACKS (OBVIOUSLY 4 NOT 5) with Audi R8 Iridium spark plugs which might be my next mod nearer to plug replacement time around 50,000 miles but not sure whether it will add anymore power with a third remap.

Unlikely but at least it will start up ok 🙂
