Oil service workshop, Reverse lights and other electrics not working..

Featured Replies

Evening, driving home on Friday had an awful burning smell in the car - wasn't sure if it was from outside.

However after shutting down the engine and then starting it again i got the Oil Service Workshop on the dash (oil levels fine and recently changed). Along with that the reversing lights, parking sensors and dimming rear view mirror have also packed up. Assuming this could be a fuse that needs changing? I have changed the ones on the side of the dash - i read it could be fuse number 4 - 5a, this made no difference...

Any guidance would be appreciated.

It sounds like an electrical short. But it is an interesting mix of items especially with the oil service message. Not sure how that is related. Have you read through the fuse assignments in your owners manual and checked them? You may not want to replace it straight away if you find it. You may want to inspect wiring...

It does sound like your air quality sensor has failed, and the other items are off the same fuse.

Can you confirm that the 5 Amp one you changed was third from the left on the top row of the dash-end fuseholder?

Think you may mean oil quality sensor?

Weren't the parking sensors on a different fuse like no. 18?

Nope. There's no such thing.

There's an oil level and temperature sensor (G266), then there's an air quality sensor, G238, that causes problems when it dies and takes out these other things when the fuse blows. The smell is because it sits in the air intake area, for obvious reasons.

I suspect that the OP may have looked at the wrong fuse due to the LHD/RHD mirroring of the fusebox info.

every day's a school day. So what's the oil service workshop message for. Is the G266 of the same fuse location?

Yep.

From May 2011 the list of things that SC4 powers is as follows:

"Heater control unit, high pressure sender, air quality sensor, automatic anti-dazzle interior mirror, oil level/oil temperature sender,

reversing lights, telephone preinstallation 1, start/stop operation button"

Not all cars will necessarily have all of those things.

I suspect that the parking sensors mentioned by the OP rely on the reverse light switch in the same way that the reversing lights do, and this will be the fuse that supplies that switch.

That was the fuse i replaced - in fact, out of desperation i changed all the 5 Amp fuses on the top row of the dash-end fuseholder!

Assuming i need to replace the air quality sensor (along with any burnt out wiring) and then replace the fuse? The fuse didn't look blown TBH.

Assumption is a dangerous thing, investigation is the better approach. Locate and inspect the air quality sensor first, including disconnecting its loom connection to see inside.

If the fuse wasn't blown, and the replacement hasn't either, I'm surprised that so many things fed from it aren't working, to be honest.

Not sure exactly where the thing is on a mk2 Octy, will see what I can dig up.

Thanks, I appreciate your help!

Kkbc did you find the location of the air quality sesnor? I'm assuming its behind the plastic trim on the nearside of the car beneath the scutle panel - and more importantly did replacibg it resolve the problem? I've the same issue on a 2011 scout.

Thanks

To answer my own question for posterity - yes the air quality sensor is under the scuttle panel behind a plastic shield  held on by 2 torx screws, it's clipped up out the way on corner of the intake grill lhs / ns above the abs pump etc if you wish!  The sensor has 'melted' replacement on order.

Apologies for not replying - I never got round to looking at this. Does the scuttle just lift out when you remove the rubber at the front or do you need to remove other parts - wipers etc? Also, which fuse needs replacing - where is it located? TIA.

Yes if your careful the scuttle just lifts up enough to remove the couple of torx screws go remove the panel below - think it was fuse 4 but not sure - everything worked again 🙂

I just had the same happen to my yeti. I was driving along and got an awful burning smell. I thought someone was burning tyres or something but discovered my oil temperature wasn't showing any more, then the oil sensor warning after I stopped later. It wasn't until after it'd bought a new sensor, which didn't fix the problem, that I noticed the reversing sensors weren't working either. Finally I had two problems to search and one mention to Google brought up this thread and I went straight for the air sensor and sure enough I could smell it before I even unplugged it. You can see here where pin 1 had melted and burned out the fuse (which is the second 5amp down in the middle column of smaller Fuses located at the driver's door side of the dash.

Ordering a new one tomorrow!

Thanks everyone!
