Black screen virtual cockpit

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Just owned my Superb for 5 months and now I've bumped into the first problem with it. Its registerd 28 dec -18 so its just 11 months old.

It all started out this sunday morning when I was going to the gym. Started the car up and the virtual cockpit didnt boot up as usual, it was totally dead. Drove about 10 minutes to the gym and was trying to figure

out how to not drive to fast without a speedometer. Also noticed that the on board computer didnt work, no avarage consumption etc. Parked outside the gym and turned the car off and then started it up again, but the virtual cockpit was still dead.

Drove it home later and no signs of hope. Then it was parked for about 2 hours in the garage and then it fired up as usual the next time I used the car. All fine I supposed until this morning when the same error occured.

Took the car on my morning commute, approx 1 hour drive, to work with a black screen and no speedometer is a blast with all the speeding cameras here i Sweden. :) hopefully it will start up on my way home later today.

I will call my dealer later today because of the warranty so no worries but has anyone else seen this on the Skodas with virtual cockpits?

If, will the change the whole instrument or how did they solve your problem?

Also noticed that the car has no connection with the SkodaConnect-app. No updates on my laste drive, consumption etc.

I've not seen anything on here but there are quite a few cases of driver screens failing in the new Merc A Class. Not the same thing I know but maybe it's a temperature thing exposing a dry joint or crack somewhere.

If you use Waze it will show your current speed or just get another GPS speed app for your phone to give you some idea.

In the UK it is illegal to drive without a speedometer

I remember a couple of years ago I was arguing on-line (not on Briskoda) that one of the most worrying aspects of digital dashes would be just that: A dead unit that would leave you without the single most important info: the vehicle's speed, but I remember being called as being exaggerating, a hater etc. Turns out I wasn't very wrong.

I have VC now in my car and I like it very much but I would have thought there should be a strong fail-safe mechanism to prevent situations as the ones you described but it turns out the car can start off and drive without worrying about its dash status, interesting... I do hope it's a one-off as I don't recall similar incidents within VAG cars but then again it's only 1-2 years that cars with VCs are out so we'll need to wait and see.

In the mean time, as suggested, stick a phone in the dash in front of you (take it easy with corners!) and run Gmaps or Waze (they both show current speed) to monitor your speed. Although, I have to say that in Sweden a) 95% of the cars out there are religiously sticking to the road limit so just follow the cars that are on a steady pace and 2) cameras?  You haven't been to a proper camera-controlled country yet if you think there are cameras in Sweden :D  In fact it's one of the most loose ones in terms of speed cameras at least in the mid-south region (below Stockholm).

My dashcam can be configured to continuously just display my car's speed.

Nikolay, Skoda Superb is not too reliable on electrical system.

See below a pie chart extracted from reliabilityindex.com

Those are percentage of faults.

Ring Skoda Assist, that is what they're there for.

Tell them the speedo isn't working, the car isn't safe / legal and ask them to arrange for a hire car to be dropped off when they come to collect your car.

  • 1 year later...

Sorry to revive an old thread, but this just happened to my 2019 Kodiaq. I pulled fuse 17 for the instrument cluster to see if it was blown and it wasn't. Discovered incidentally you can't even start the car without this fuse! After replacing the fuse the screen came back on and noticed the trip counter was reset to 0. I'm guessing that there was a glitch in the VC that pulling the fuse forced it to reboot.

Is there an easier way to reboot the VC without having to pull the fuse? With the infotainment system you can reboot it by holding the power button.

Thanks
